What makes an effective supervisor? During my Personal Learning and Thinking Skills modules I have completed a lot of different modules each different in their own way and each is importantly effective. These modules included things such as learning when and why mind maps can be used effectively, SCAMPER which is a process in which a number of questions are asked and another module was Belbins Self Perception which is a question with a selection of answers and you have 10 points, you have to divide these 10 points between 5 answers that you feel show how you operate as a supervisor or manager. Another key attribute an effective supervisor should have is to praise your employees when they have done well; it is always nice to know that you are doing good work and that you are helping your company with your efforts. Have weekly meetings; let your team know that you are interested in their opinion and that their safety is your number one priority, everyone should feel safe before and after work. Focus on your employees strengths, have people that are experienced and knowledgeable doing jobs that are crucial but also let employees with not as much experience help and get involved with these jobs so that they can develop further as well. An attribute that is essential is not to blame other people when things go wrong, blaming your team and being aggressive can cause a divide in the team which can lead to difficulties at work. Always ensure that your team is up to date with training that they need to carry out their job safely and gain more knowledge on what they are working with. Throughout my short time within the quarrying industry I have learnt that communication is key for a supervisor, if supervisor weren’t clear with instructions I wouldn’t be able to complete the task they are giving me safely and efficiently. I also learnt about how communication and team bonding is key through the university. We were set different tasks such as canoeing, climbing, caving and just general activities that considered a lot of working together. I found the experience not just an enjoyable one but an eye opener into what it takes to be able to bond as a team and work with each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
