As a human resources professional, I've traveled a creative and non-traditional journey to arrive at this destination in my career. I began working as a contract employee with Texas Workforce Commission, first as a Joint Training Partnership Act (JTPA) Coordinator providing job coaching; and later, as an unemployment claims representative, where I learned a great deal about employee law and conducting hearings.

I decided to utilize my degree in public relations and began working as a marketing communications professional. In this capacity, I served as the communications resource for companies that I've worked - developing a variety of content ranging from annual reports, to benefits literature, to news releases and publicity collateral. This was an exciting position, as it provided exposure to all areas of human resources. It was during this time that I developed an interest in the field and began honing my skills toward a career in this area. My supervisor at the time was a solid mentor who took great pride in working with young professionals and helping identify their strengths. I am grateful for his leadership and influence and have often recalled his guidance as I've developed my own management style.

For nearly seven years now, I've managed the campus recruitment program as part of my role. I am responsible for all aspects of human resources for our interns - minus compensation and benefits - since these are unpaid staff members. Although my title is Recruiting Services Manager, this role has a much broader scope and has prepared me for a generalist position through the handling of:
• Recruiting, sourcing and on-boarding
• Succession planning
• Compliance
