The way a coach behaves underpins the coaching process and ensures sports coaching is conducted in a positive and inclusive manner (Reference). Coaches must be able to promote and maintain this behaviour effectively by demonstrating good communication and motivational skills, encouraging and rewarding behaviour when positive and challenging when inappropriate.

My senior project is about being a coach and how it can be difficult and not an easy task. I wanted to show others that being a coach is something that takes time and effort in order to accomplish it. Being a coach is not a fun job but it is a job that will help you in the future. Coaching is an experience that not a lot of people get to go through but those who do become not just better people but they become teachers to others in troubling times and in time of need. Coaching gives you and also shows you that being helpful and courteous to others actually helps you out as a person and it also helps out the players you’re coaching to be better people and to be kind and not take things in the wrong way and to show them a better way that will help them in their life.

The coach’s job is to enhance the athlete physically, socially, and psychologically, winning is only considered a by-product of that job (Gillham, Burton, & Gillham, 2013). Gillham, Burton, and Gillham (2013) focused on developing a Coaching Success Questionnaire-2 to allow a means of evaluating other aspects of a coach’s interaction with their athletes as both a research and coach development tool. A sample group of athletes at the varsity and club level ranging from ages 18 to 25 was used to develop the questionnaire by asking their perceptions of their coaches.
To be a successful coach, the first thing a coach has to do is become well acquainted with the athlete. The coach should get to know the athlete’s life outside of track. If the coach does not know the person as an individual then he would not be able to coach them. According to a collegiate track athlete, “a track coach should not only improve your running, but he should improve your way of life” (Jones). I believe that statement is true. A coach needs to have that close personal connection with their athletes. Like a teacher would have a connection to a student. With out that teacher, student connection the athlete will not enjoy learning nor will the coach be able to teach the athlete. In fact, a coach is a teacher, and the athlete is a student. That should be true for all coaches, not just a track coach.

Coaches of sports teams in actuality are much too strict on their athletes, one reason being they can get carried away and abuse their athletes. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. Coaches who put their team and players first, are coaches who value each and every one as a person (Yanity, 2011). A good coach will teach life skills along with developing each player’s athletic talent (Yanity, 2011). With athletic participation at an all-time high, coaches have become an important element in the education of student-athletes (Yanity, 2011). It is important for coaches to have moral and ethical behavior in all phases of their lives as young men and women look to these role models for guidance.
Sport coaches all coach their players in different ways. Some coaches use forms of encouragement more than others, and some use punishment more. There is a lot of information and research on what coaching style is considered the most effective. But among all the research there are arguments on the “correct way” of coaching. Research on this topic is qualitative because there is no one definite answer, there is almost always an exception. What is it that promotes a positive response and outcome in athletes and coaches most of the time? Promotes a negative response in both athletes and coaches?
