The Rogerian school of thought was developed by Carl Rogers and deviated from Freud’s psychoanalytic and the behavioral theories that were popular at the time. The Rogerian or client-centered approach was seen as an alternative to the then-dominant models in American psychology of behaviorism and psychoanalysis and as such became aligned with the emerging third force of humanistic psychology (Joseph & Murphy, 2012). The Rogerian approach does not rely on stages of development or conditioned responses to create a behavior change in the client. The Rogerian approach is primarily focused on the individual personal experience of the client. Behavior change is accomplished through the process of self-actualization. Self-actualization motivates an individual to seek the full potential of their abilities. Rogers views human beings as inherently good and they desire to self-actualize (Peltier, 2009). Rogerian thought is also commonly referred to as person-centered, client based, or the emphatic approach.
The true purpose of coaching is to facilitate a behavioral change through a client’s self-awareness and discovery. The Rogerian approach aligns particularly well with this purpose by allowing the coaching process, itself, to lead the client in discovering his or her own solutions. Self-awareness is achieved through empowerment in this approach. The coach, in this instance, empowers the client to recognize their own capabilities and potentiality.

Rogerian theory is a theory founded on the clinical experience of Carl Rogers, and searching with interest an empirical confirmation according to psychological science modules. Nevertheless, to adopt a phenomenological and therefore subjective point of view, it carries within itself a strong dose of anticientifismo. In addition, this theory is completely hands-on: is hyperkinetic to describe and explain what happened in the therapy of Carl Rogers. The Rogerian argument focuses on aspects related to therapeutic change, and not on the personality structure. In this sense, is a dynamic theory.
Personal coaching as defined by Biswas – Diener (2009) is a professional relationship in which coaches work with clients to facilitate experiential learning and improve functioning and performance, of in the context of working toward specific goals. Some core assumptions that people have an innate capacity to grow and develop a focus on mutually agreed upon goals, and an understanding that the relationship is relatively equal and collaborative as stated by the author (2009). Some techniques that are in seen during a coaching process include but are not limited to the following list as provided by the author: active listening, the use of powerful questions which are based on broad and open-ended to raise awareness of the client to take stock of their values and resources, cognitive tools are used to reframe negative interpretations, use different types of encouragement tools, and that clients are held accountable (2009). The topics that will be discussed in this paper include what skills do I current have, which skills need to be develop, my comfort level and effectiveness, coaching approaches (including methods and tools), any challenges about coaching and finally how coaching relates to my professional career.

As the field of counseling continues to progress numerous theoretical orientations have been developed. One theoretical approach to counseling has been coined as person centered counseling or client centered therapy. This type of approach is commonly referred to as Rogerian psychotherapy. Rogerian therapy focuses on the empowerment of individuals with the inner self. These constructs are vital to ensuring and promoting a transparent and honest atmosphere which subsequently results in effective counseling. The behaviors that are found in client centered counseling are valuable as they motivate the client to explore their "hidden feelings" and become aware of where their feelings derive from. My senior project is about being a coach and how it can be difficult and not an easy task. I wanted to show others that being a coach is something that takes time and effort in order to accomplish it. Being a coach is not a fun job but it is a job that will help you in the future. Coaching is an experience that not a lot of people get to go through but those who do become not just better people but they become teachers to others in troubling times and in time of need. Coaching gives you and also shows you that being helpful and courteous to others actually helps you out as a person and it also helps out the players you’re coaching to be better people and to be kind and not take things in the wrong way and to show them a better way that will help them in their life.
To explain, the client should not be inferior to the counselor; the environment should be two people discussing an issue and ways to make a difference. A therapist should occasionally share similar experiences; therefore, sessions should make clients feel comfortable. To add, the client should feel safe due to the positive atmosphere the therapist brings to the session. The goal is to finally give the client a chance to be heard, regularly people are muted and feel like they are insignificant to society. Similarly, to Person-centered therapy where communication with the client is unconditionally positive. The therapist needs to genuinely care about the client needs for them to fully express themselves successfully. Person-Centered Therapy is an optimistic theory that is categorized in the humanistic approaches to therapy. PC therapy believes that human beings are intrinsically good, and are motivated to be the best that they can be (Carver & Scheier, 2008, p. 346). The theory embodies respect for individuals and values of tolerance and understanding (Brodley, 2007, p. 140). As the name implies the client is responsible for his or her own growth and improvement (Carver & Scheier, 2008, p.344). Rogers' stated that the main assumption of his approach is that “individuals have within themselves vast resources for self-understanding and for altering their self-concepts, basic attitudes, and self- directed behavior” (Rogers, 1980, p.115). One of the underlying assumptions, and main motivation, of Person-Centered Therapy is that human beings possess an innate tendency to grow and meet their full potential, or to self-actualize. Self-actualization is the inherent motivation to reach our highest potential, both emotionally and intellectually (Kosslyn & Rosenberg, 2004, p. 464). Self-actualization moves one towards autonomous behavior and self-sufficiency, it enriches one’s life and enhances their creativity. It also promotes congruence, wholeness, and integration of the person. Rogers describes self-actualizing people as the fully functioning person (Carver & Scheier, 2008, p.322).
..., Ellis doesn’t put it completely on the clients to figure out their problems. Ellis offers his opinion on the client’s problem and provides ways to change themselves. Unlike Beck too, Ellis refuses to approach the clients with support and acceptance as he doesn’t want patients to feel like as if their therapist are being nice because they are behaving appropriately; as if the therapist have a certain expectation from the client. Ellis prefers to build the therapeutic relationship with patient in a more confronting way. This approaching method are always seen as harsh, gaining critics especially to those who stereotypes therapy session as clients seeking comfort and support – not being scolded and told how to change their way of viewing life. Though it is believed as the time goes on, REBT practitioner is not as vigorous as Ellis does when confronting with clients.
Carl Rogers developed person centered therapy, also known as client centered, non-directive or Rogerian therapy, in the 1930s. The person centered therapy, differs than other typical formal therapy, against directive and psychanalytic approach. Rogers believed that the therapy should take place where there is a close personal relationship between the client and the therapist. Rogers rejected the traditional hierarchical relationship between the client and therapist, and view the clients as equals by using the term “client” instead of “patient”. In person-centered therapy, the client determines the general direction of the therapy while the therapist ask informal clarifying question to promote client’s self-insight and self-understanding.
According to Shebib, 2014, “he believed in the importance of seeing each other as “becoming” and created a belief in the capacity of people to change”. He believed his clients are not bound by their past and that clients must be seen for their potential, their strengths, inner power and their capacity to change (Shebib, 2014). Rogers had his own methods, and they were based on the premise that if the right or core conditions are present, then change is possible. He also said that core conditions act to speed the natural process of heeling or recovery from psychological pain or problem (Shebib, 2014). When a councilor displays these core conditions, the potential for change and a positive relationship with clients increase. The three core conditions Rogers had been unconditional positive regard, empathy and genuineness (Shebib, 2014). This theory also proposed that the therapeutic relationship is the guidance in counselling (Stulmaker & Ray, 2015). Person centered theory offers a new way of looking at a person and their development, as well as how someone can be assisted in their change. This theory allows for the client to make their own changes in the right conditions, and to allow them to have their own thoughts on themselves, and not the opinion of others (Capuzzi, & Stauffer 2016). The focus to self-actualize through the honest view on one’s own strengths and weakness. Roger’s humanistic theory believes that the basic human need is for positive regard. Is the person receives it they gain unconditional senesce of worth. If positive regard is not gained an individual would be incapable of self-actualization as they do not know what they need. Roger’s therapy is client centered and provides an environment in which unconditional positive is received, is genuine, and have empathy.
