¬When considering what my own personal philosophy of counseling would be, it was eye opening to consider who I was a person and how much I have grown. The self analysis was new to me because I never thought about how I do that on a day to day basis. Reviewing the questions I found that a lot of my focus surrounded family, my significant other, and close friends. Constantly living in a diverse population and having that as my surrounding also made its mark in my answers. I also noted that both past and present influences, but primarily the present, play a large role in my own perspective. By following the prompt, I was made to understand that my thought process makes me think of what is occurring in the present and how I can alter these happenings to help shape the future that I want. In regards to the questions and answers, I feel as though my personal approach to counseling is based off of my own priorities I set forth in myself that follow more closely to the aspects of Reality Therapy, and Adlerian Therapy. Though Reality Therapy primarily focuses on the present, it still has some grounding in the past but not as much as Adlerian does. Even knowing this I still feel these two therapies are more closely related to my own belief system. I am in agreement with Reality Therapy, in that we are responsible for the choices we make. I trust that we can exercise great control over our lives, over how we can change to better ourselves, and to better our relationships with those around us. I feel that we all as a society are influenced by basic needs: belonging, survival, freedom, and power, and that these needs can be used as motivational tool when working with clients. It is then that I want to be able to help them feel more empowered and recognize that they can make changes with effort on their part. In my eyes to be suitable to help others I need to continue to grow as a person myself both professionally and mentally. The counseling session should be centered on the client and their understanding of their world and/or problems not heavily weighted on the counselor interpretation of the client’s situation. Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. If the Therapist were to force something on the client by saying this is what's wrong, and here is how you fix it, they might head in the right direction at first, but not because of their own will. By allowing them to make a conscious effort to help themselves it will mean more and last longer. In reading this book I learned a lot about the way existential therapy works, and how I can go about helping people that come to me for advise. Not only do I understand that people have the freedom to make there own choices, but also now I understand that people have the freedom of responsibility which allows them to change their lives and better themselves.
This leads to the question of, “How do people change?” Self-awareness of one’s current plight, whether it is internally or externally, and an intense desire to discover new ways of living are two main ingredients to spur change. People must be fully aware that their current behavior is causing more harm than good in their lives. And on the same token, discovering that there are alternative ways of living can also make people change. However, in order for change to actually occur, people must be willing to live out new ways of behaving and thinking. For people who want to make changes, but find it difficult to make a step, a counselor can help facilitate change through encouragement and various self-empowering
I also find that I am rather goal oriented as well. The point of counseling is to help someone start/stop something that they feel is big and influencing in their lives. Even though what they come in with might not be the exact thing that needs to be worked on. In the line of picking an approach that I find the most appealing, I found transactional analysis to be extremely interesting. With the personality and counseling approach tied into one, it really blew my mind and was something that I could see myself looking into more deeply in the future. However, based on the fact that it was only briefly discussed, I don’t know enough about the set up and how it works in an actual session to completely know if it’ll work for me. I believe that I most identify with person-centered approach to counseling. I like the idea of just being able to make everyone feel better with a few simple words – but that’s not how it works. There are things that happen to people that can’t be easily fixed. The reason I am drawn to a person-centered approach is because instead of trying to make everything seem better – the counselor tries to get the client to get a more appropriate representation of themselves in the world they are in. I believe that this style of counseling would fit really well with a transactional analysis. From my own background and stand point, I believe that this will benefit myself – in the sense that I won’t burn myself out from trying to fix my clients problems. Counseling psychology is the school of thought that I identify with the most. As I transition to graduate school and begin a social work program, my ultimate goal is to become an independent counselor.
