Goals of Therapy With the case of Juan, I would utilize Adlerian therapy as a theoretical framework to guide our work together. The goals of therapy would be developed in collaboration with Juan during the objective interview and lifestyle assessment based on what he would like to accomplish. The goals for my work with Juan are for him to develop a sense of belonging, overcome feelings of discouragement, and make changes in his lifestyle. He self-identified as being Mexican and being the youngest, and only son, out of four children. Being the only son in a Latinx family can place added pressure on Juan especially if the family adheres to strict traditional gender roles which emphasize men’s machismo. Juan also mentioned that he worked during high school which could indicate a financial need for his family. When describing the counseling relationship Juan would say, “My counselor really cares about me, after meeting with him I see where I have been making mistakes in my thinking. I like that we are able to work together and it is not just him telling me what’s wrong with me but encouraging me to do better.” This description would outline the collaborative nature of Adlerian thereby and the importance of focusing on the whole …show more content…
The focus would be understanding the client as a whole person rather than just the concerns that initially brought them to counseling. By maintaining a sense of curiosity through active listening and genuine interest in the client, I would encourage him to share more about himself. As a part of his lifestyle assessment, we would explore his family constellation and ask questions such as, “What were you like as a child?” and “What was your relationship with your siblings and parents?” Questions more tailored to Juan would be, “How did your parents’ experiences as immigrants impact your childhood?” and “Were you expected to act differently than your siblings based on your gender?” This information will lead to more insight to how his family has shaped his values and his perceptions of self and others. When making interpretations, I would work with Juan to get his perspective and make sure the interpretations are correct. I may say, “I wonder if you have lost interest in some of your hobbies because you are worried your family may think you are not focusing enough on school” then provide Juan an opportunity to share his thoughts on this
As a result, I am learning how to assist clients without labeling the client and developing a proper diagnosis. Assessing client problems should happen throughout the counseling process. In the beginning, counselors get background information on their clients to help the counselor develop a diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Correct diagnosis of clients is vital to receive reimbursement from insurance companies for counseling services. Assessments help the counselor determine an appropriate treatment for the client. Assessments can help clients realize their strengths and weaknesses (Whiston, 2017). Even from an early age, Rodriguez is a successful student. Everyone is extremely proud of Rodriguez for earning awards and graduating to each subsequent level of his education. But all his success was not necessarily positive. In fact, we see that his education experience is a fairly negative one. One negative that Rodriguez endures is his solitude. Education compels him to distance himself from his family and heritage. According to Richard Hoggart, a British education theorist, this is a very natural process for a scholarship boy. Hoggart explains that the ?home and classroom are at cultural extremes,? (46). There is especially an opposition in Rodriguez?s home because his parents are poorly educated Mexicans. His home is filled with Spanish vernacular and English filled with many grammatical errors. Also, the home is filled with emotions and impetuosity, whereas the classroom lacks emotion and the teachers accentuate rational thinking and reflectiveness.
Allison showed lack of awareness about Carmen’s cultural values. Allison should seek training about counseling Latinos. Allison’s practicum is in an agency located in a predominately Latino neighborhood. Carmen might not return to counseling with Allison, but Allison is likely to have another Latino client. Thus, receiving appropriate training about counseling Latinos would prepare Allison for future clients that she would encounter. The four dimensions of training that Corey et al. (2011) recommended are: self-exploration, didactic course work, internship, and experiential approaches (p. 145). There are various options that Allison has to educate herself around providing effective and ethically appropriate counseling with Latinos.

The idea is to do so by expressing a willingness to learn more about, and showing respect for the client’s worldview, belief systems, and means of problem-solving while remaining empathetic to their emotional journey. Discovering and addressing the client’s personal stories and realities will enable the counselor to establish culturally appropriate interventions.
Alfred Adler was the founder of Adlerian Counseling. He was born in 1870 in the country of Austria. who gave his theory the name Individual Psychology, because he wanted people to see that his theory and methods were designed to help clients help themselves. He believed that everyone had and internal need to be a part of society, and a desire to contribute to that society. That everyone strives for perfection, and everyone initially feels inferior to everyone else. I am choosing to write about gestalt therapy. Gestalt’s founding theorists were Frederick (Fritz) S. Perls and Laura Posner Perls. In 1952 Fritz and Laura and other associates established the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy. Gestalt theory is an existential, phenomenological and process-based theory made on the basis that people must be understood in the setting of their ongoing relationships with their atmosphere. Awareness, choice, and responsibility are the base fundamentals of the theory. Contemporary gestalt therapy is sometimes called relational gestalt therapy which stresses a dialogue and relationship between a client and a therapist must be had. Fritz is often seen in one of two ways, either people are in awe of him or find him tough and aggressively confrontational. Today’s gestalt therapists seek to be more supportive, accepting, respectful, dialogical, and empathic and challenging (Corey, 2013).
The concept of Adlerian family therapy was theorized by Alfred Adler and is one of the first psychiatrists to embark on family therapy. The principle of Adlerian family therapy is an individual and social system is holistic and inseparable in nature, behavior is interactive and with a purpose and the individual seeks meaning by acceptance in a social system. A family is generally the social system which an individual seeks acceptance. A principle of Adlerian family therapy is subjective, each person generates their own meaning from their experiences. The life roles and life meaning is greatly influenced by family environment, which individuals form their own private logic or their view of the world. The family problems can be related to faulty private logic and discouragement within the family. Adlerian family therapy incorporates the additional concept, parents and children tend to get locked into negative interactions which are repetitive and grounded on mistaken goals, resulting in motivation for family members. The key theories of Adlerian family therapy is family atmosphere, family constellation, and mistaken goals.
In addition, some clients may want to explore their multiple identities and how they position themselves in a world that is highly influenced by culture. Nonetheless, as I read this question, I realized that there is no right or wrong answer. Similarly, there is no right or wrong reason to come to therapy. Specific skills from the Adlerian approach I would like to implement with Ryan would include life tasks and therapy along with task setting and commitment. In these skills we would work on testing Ryan’s satisfaction in five areas of his life including occupation, society, love, self-development, and spiritual development.
