AC 2.4 Recognise any potential barriers to coaching in the workplace and explain suitable strategies to overcome these barriers.
There are many potential barriers in the workplace that will stop coaching dead in its tracks if allowed to do so.
These must be recognised and overcome where possible with a more “let’s not look for obstacles not to coach” and a more “let’s find a solution to do it” frame of mind!
If you are working for a company where the leadership method is that of telling individuals how things are done and where “red tape” is key you will find that the company conflicts with the principles of coaching conflict. This constitutes the single largest barrier to successful coaching.
Common barriers to

– Which always out ways the cost of coaching!!
Staff Shortages
Reduced staffing levels can also play a part when arranging coaching. When you take an individual out of the normal working environment there is a gap to fill. If your place of work is currently short staffed it is not always easy to arrange cover and this can course a problem with output in the short term.
Location
If all there is to offer is a small dark, poorly lit room with now windows it would be as well to look for some were else as this is not conducive to a good coaching environment. Adequate premises, providing good lighting , windows , heating etc the better the results from coaching.
Time
Finding time to coach can be an issue. The last thing you need is for the coachee to be pulled away from the coaching session to go and look at another issue elsewhere within the company. Time can always be found through good planning and time management, remember a coached person offers more to the company. Once a time is agreed both parties need to commit to it! Perhaps arranging the coaching session when the company is quieter or even after hours will help maintain good time
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
Being a volunteer can be a big commitment and just being “well-meaning” (Page 2) is not enough, there also needs to be support and genuine caring. When thinking about coaches we may only think of them as a coach and nothing else, thus letting many people overlook the possible stressors in their lives like family, workload, financial problems, and general stress. Students are at a point in time where endless knowledge is at their finger-tips as a result of the internet, and therefor the teacher or coach is not the “Gatekeeper and judicious disseminator of knowledge” (Chapter 12) as Carol Wilson said in “Performance Coaching: a complete guide to best practice coaching and training” this change creates a power dynamic shift where the coach may just be facilitating learning. Since the coach and their team are both able to access the same level of knowledge the coach could feel power hungry and their frustrations may be reflected in their methods of coaching. Carol Wilsons focused on the topic of being “Emotionally intelligent” and how it can “empower students, relieve tension, and reduce conflict” which can then Bring the focus back to what is most important, education. The one thing that the internet fails to show us is how to be naturally, emotionally intelligent and is better done by someone like a coach who can tailor their explanation to help their team fully understand. Stress can result in changes in our behaviour and can “range from aggression to social withdrawal” (Chapter 2) explained Doug Strcharczyck and Peter Clough the authors of “Developing Mental toughness: Coaching strategies to improve performance, resilience, and well-being,” which supports the idea that the stressors in a coaches life can result in aggressive coaching techniques. ...ified by hundreds of principals, superintendents, and school board members. There are many concerns about the safety, training, organization, philosophy, communications, and general management in coaching. According to the California High School Coaching Education and Training Program as stated in the Coaching Education Legislature Assembly Bill No. 2741, “It is a conservative estimate that at least 25,000 coaches annually need training and an orientation just to meet current coaching regulations contained in Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations, including basic safety and CPR requirements.” That is why course techniques of coaching specific sports are necessary for a persons not trained and certified as a physical education teachers because they need to understand the basic philosophy and principles of athletics in education, know the health related aspects of athletics, and the techniques used to coach a specific sport. With every coach there are the little pieces of the game…strategy of offense and defense, practice/game planning, or scouting, but to get the whole picture they need to know the basic philosophy and principles, health aspects, and the obvious techniques.
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will”. Being a football coach requires someone who can be a great communicator. This person needs to understand communication on both sides an individual can not just demand that it's a one way street where you talk and athletes listen. The career of coaching requires history of the game knowledge of the game, extensive education, and positive and negatives aspects of the game.
As a coach you do fail sometimes and that's what is difficult but Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeeded.” I believe that this goes for coaching as well because you are going to fail over and over again and you will soon see that those failures are actually your accomplishments. No one said life was easy but coaching can be easy and it’s a way to connect with players and others and bring out the best in people and show that people can work together and accomplish many things no matter how difficult or hard it is and it can be fun and thrilling at the same
However, coaching in education might have some disadvantages in the educational organizations. One disadvantage is the fact that coaching programs can be expensive and some schools might not afford these kinds of programs. Another disadvantage is that coaching might take time to be effective thus, results will not appear directly (Marian, 2010).
If I were Alex, I would use the amiable coaching style to help James stay productive and perform to the best of his abilities. One main concept of this coaching style is to connect with the employee on a personal level and develop the employee. James seems to be very smart, but he needs someone to show interest in himself and truly want him to succeed. When James was most successful, his manager was personable and was invested in helping his employees succeed. Along with being personable, Alex should develop employees and invest in his/ her future. Developing an employee should include training or continuing education opportunities that helps the employee develop into a well-rounded employee that feels comfortable with his/ her manager and organization (Aguinis, 2013). By a manager investing in the employees and of...
This will always filter down to the rest of the organisation if the Executive Team and any senior management are fully involved. The CIPD (2009) states that the VT Group plc took a “top-down approach...Senior executives and managers have all undertaken training in coaching and as a result the approach has been embedded into the organisation.” By taking an approach like this, the whole organisation becomes more aware of the importance of such a programme. It has high results as well as stated within the VT Group plc, within two years their revenues and profits
“A coach is someone who is equipped to aid individuals or groups and organisations to maximise their performance in pursuit of their desired goals.” (Dexter et al, (2011) p.4)
Coaching leadership has isn’t good points when you need to help a group of people become better, however this way isn’t the best for a business because people can take it a different way or you may not be able to help them get better. Coaching can get people motivated and raise skill level but it also can fail by people thinking you are micromanaging them(Wall Street Journal and Wise Toast) . Some people hate being told how to do things a certain way and sometimes this how Coaching leadership comes off and that could cause a lot of problems with business chemistry in the long run(Wall Street Journal).
Successful healthcare organizations must utilize leaders who understand the importance of coaching employees. Managers must coach employees to keep them competent and to keep them working toward a common goal with the organization’s vision in mind. Leaders must assess employee’s abilities and plan interventions based on the assessment. The purpose of this paper is to review the coaching process, assess an individual’s abilities and weaknesses, and use the six-step coaching process to develop a coaching plan for the individual.
I wanted to start telling the story of our experience by sharing the feelings I brought into this exercise. A few years ago I underwent an experience of coaching through several sessions that left me this taste in the mouth that the coaching as a tool to develop others is not very effective. I have not taken the time to deeply analyze what went wrong but in general if I had to choose to do it again I think I would choose another methodology to foster change. Its objective in general is to assist in building behavioral skills, but in my opinion to really look for a long lasting change you need to give a deeper understanding to the lack of a certain skills, strongly reflect on the variables linked to it as could be the emotions, values and motivations that conduce you towards a behavior different that that one desired. Personally, I enjoy seeking information that allows me to jump beyond the facts, and staying on the behavioral side of the reality limits my passion for inspiration and insight.
The coach can reach out to the employee to set up further dates. Also, twenty five principles of coaching are mentioned, the principle “confidentiality” is emphasized on. Some organizations keep the records of the coaching sessions while others do not. Next in regards to long-term coaching, a list of follow up questions are mentioned for when the coach can ask how the coaching is going. Through this process, the coach acts as a role model.
When you hear the word coach and then the word mentor, you might think these words are very much alike. However, they are very different, not only in the characteristics that make up each one but also in how they approach the learner/mentee. The purpose of coaching is to improve an individual’s performance on the job. A coach is someone capable of teaching how to develop skills, mainly by setting goals for the learner. For example, lets take a football coach who is considered an expert in the sport. He has several goals in mind for his team, which includes winning. His plan is to help them develop certain skills to attain that goal; it might be through teamwork, cooperation, strategic thinking, etc. The relationship between the coach and the
You may have decided that you need the one on one support and accountability of a business coach, but are you ready to work? Hiring a business coach doesn't mean that now you'll find the time to do the work. You have to make a decision to put forth the time and effort. I've had mom entrepreneurs who paid me months in advanced thinking that the money would be their motivation, only to realize that they committed to make the payment but didn't commit to putting forth the energy. Your coach will be your support, your resource, your partner, your cheerleader, your consultant. But she will not do the work for you.
