Coaching is not an easy task and figuring out the best way to lead and guide employees can be overwhelming and challenging. Alex is now in a position where she has to be a motivator, leader, and a coach to several employees. She needs to understand the concept of coaching and the behaviors that go along with her coaching style. The concept of coaching helps develop and grow employees to achieve performance improvement, but it also helps the managers see how the employees embrace their job tasks and asses their results in comparison to the overall mission of the company (Bawany, 2015). Therefore, Alex needs to look back at her previous managers and determine what qualities and behaviors they possessed in order to improve her performance. Also, she must look at what personality traits James has and look at his previous managers to see which manager coached James to perform the best while working for the company. If I were Alex, I would use the amiable coaching style to help James stay productive and perform to the best of his abilities. One main concept of this coaching style is to connect with the employee on a personal level and develop the employee. James seems to be very smart, but he needs someone to show interest in himself and truly want him to succeed. When James was most successful, his manager was personable and was invested in helping his employees succeed. Along with being personable, Alex should develop employees and invest in his/ her future. Developing an employee should include training or continuing education opportunities that helps the employee develop into a well-rounded employee that feels comfortable with his/ her manager and organization (Aguinis, 2013). By both individuals being involved in the process, it allows Alex to understand what James’ vision is and it allows her the chance to help him achieve his specific goals. Also, Alex should encourage James to write down his goals and review them on a daily basis, so he can be reminded of his job at hand and the steps he can take to achieve his goals and stay focused. A good coach would help the employee find ways to achieve his/ her goals and provide feedback in what aspects could be changed to increase performance to reach or exceed his/ her goals. Therefore, it is very beneficial for Alex and James to set his goals together and then Alex works towards helping him achieve these specific goals in an effort for James to feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.
