Seventeen Syllables by Yamamoto
"Yamamoto does reveal through her fiction the sorry plight of many female immigrants caught in unhappy marriages. What made the lives of these Issei women especially bleak was that unlike Black women, for example, who in similar situations often turned to one another for support, rural Issei women were not only separated by the Pacific from their mothers and grandmothers, but often cut off from one another as well. Having to take care of children and to work alongside their husbands on isolated farms, they had little time and opportunity to cultivate friendships with other women. The only members of the same sex to whom they could embosom their thoughts were their own daughters, who all too often had engrossing problems of their own.
"Seventeen Syllables" both begins and ends with a conversation between the mother and daughter, which is the only access the reader has to the mother's passion about writing and her past secrets. Both mother and daughter realize the difficulties in communications between one another, and suspect its dangers, yet they continue to have intimate discussions. Because we are only given Rosie's perspective, we are aware of her reservations. For example, when confronted with the intense conversation between she and her mother at the end of the story, she thinks to herself, "don't tell me now ... tell me tomorrow, tell me next week, don't tell me today." (Yamamoto 390) Although she realizes this could be the end of her world, as she knows it she listens as a way to support her mother. ...ealizes the absurdity of asking her young teen daughter to agree to "never marry" (Yamamoto 391), or possibly the absurdity of realizing who was responding, she responds by saying to herself, "you fool"(Yamamoto 391) The regret the mother expresses is a result of her recognizing the mistake she made in revealing herself in this way, or possibly her awareness of how young this confidant is and how just as with the haiku, Rosie does not understand all the complications life has to offer and has little comprehension of the world in which her mother exists.

The novel, Farewell to Manzanar, by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, tells her family’s true story of how they struggled to not only survive, but thrive in forced detention during World War II. She was seven years old when the war started with the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1942. Her life dramatically changed when her and her family were taken from their home and sent to live at the Manzanar internment camp. Along with ten thousand other Japanese Americans, they had to adjust to their new life living behind barbed wire. Obviously, as a young child, Jeanne did not fully understand why they had to move, and she was not fully aware of the events happening outside the camp. However, in the beginning, every Japanese American had questions. They wondered why they had to leave. Now, as an adult, she recounts the three years she spent at Manzanar and shares how her family attempted to survive. The conflict of ethnicities affected Jeanne and her family’s life to a great extent.
But, in this book Jeanne describes how her dad was in love with the United States. He rejected being Japanese and supported America. “That night Papa burned the flag he had brought with him from Hiroshima thirty five years earlier”(pg 6). Moving from place to place made it hard for The Wakatsuki family to get attached to. The family is then transported to Owens Valley, California, where 10,000 internees.
Matsumoto studies three generations, Issei, Nisei, and Sansei living in a closely linked ethnic community. She focuses her studies in the Japanese immigration experiences during the time when many Americans were scared with the influx of immigrants from Asia. The book shows a vivid picture of how Cortex Japanese endured violence, discriminations during Anti-Asian legislation and prejudice in 1920s, the Great Depression of 1930s, and the internment of 1940s. It also shows an examination of the adjustment period after the end of World War II and their return to the home place.
Soon after Papa’s arrest, Mama relocated the family to the Japanese immigrant ghetto on Terminal Island. For Mama this was a comfort in the company of other Japanese but for Jeanne it was a frightening experience. It was the first time she had lived around other people of Japanese heritage and this fear was also reinforced by the threat that her father would sell her to the “Chinaman” if she behaved badly. Beginning in March of 1942, in the midst of World War II, over 100,000 Japanese-Americans were forcefully removed from their homes and ordered to relocate to several of what the United States has euphemistically labeled “internment camps.” In Farewell to Manzanar, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston describes in frightening detail her family’s experience of confinement for three and a half years during the war. In efforts to cope with the mortification and dehumanization and the boredom they were facing, the Wakatsukis and other Japanese-Americans participated in a wide range of activities. The children, before a structured school system was organized, generally played sports or made trouble; some adults worked for extremely meager wages, while others refused and had hobbies, and others involved themselves in more self-destructive activities.

Fulfilling the roles of both mother and breadwinner creates an assortment of reactions for the narrator. In the poem’s opening lines, she commences her day in the harried role as a mother, and with “too much to do,” (2) expresses her struggle with balancing priorities. Known for her work as a historian and rather outspoken political activist, Yamakawa Kikue was also the author of her book titled Women of the Mito Domain (p. xix). At the time she was writing this work, Yamakawa was under the surveillance of the Japanese government as the result of her and her husband’s work for the socialist and feminist movements in Japan (p. xx-xxi). Some were as young as fourteen while some were mothers who were forced to leave their child behind in Japan, but for these women the sacrifice will be worth it once they get to San Francisco. Yet, the women desired a better life separate from their past, but brought things that represent their culture desiring to continue the Buddha traditions in America; such as, their kimonos, calligraphy brushes, rice paper, tiny brass Buddha, fox god, dolls from their childhood, paper fans, and etc. (Otsuka, 2011, p. 9) A part of them wanted a better life full of respect, not only toward males but also toward them, and away from the fields, but wanted to continue the old traditions from their home land. War is a devastating event in which a country is in a state of aggression and resentment. Although war has its effects on almost every civilian residing in that country, historically people of minority groups and of low social class suffer the most. During the Pacific War, the Japanese Imperial Army was struggling with many cases of rape and the spread of venereal diseases among its armed forces. In order to cope with these ongoing issues, they schemed an idea to invent a comfort women system. The system started off with real Japanese prostitute volunteers, but then turned to tricking and abducing women into the system once volunteers ran out. As the Pacific War continued, Japanese forces began establishing “comfort stations” in many other parts of Asia. When studying the Japanese Comfort Women system of World War II, it is apparent who the people who suffered the most were. The Japanese Armed Forces sought after a certain group(s) of women who were seen as easy drafts into the comfort women system because of the many disadvantages associated with being a woman of a low social class and/or non-Japanese race during the World War II.
The term gender-solidarity refers to a bond among a particular gender. In this article the focus is on unity among the females from all castes and classes in the novels of Toni Morrison and Alice Walker. Some of the characters of the novels find this phenomenon a part of their lives because all of them face the same biasness in the family, society, and everywhere.
Like many novels and mini-series of the past, present and future, gender is always a subject that is to be explored. To begin, in The Emigrants written by George Lamming, we see the recurring theme that gender is represented through the view of the superior or more important gender, and of the lesser but somewhat still important gender. The men in The Emigrants, are highly valued, viewed as the ones fighting the war, who should be looking for training an education, to provide for their wives, and for themselves. The women are seen as lesser, sometimes as objects but also valued, as they provide support to the men. They are represented with a contrasting view. In the beginning of the novel, we see that the men are highly respected; “the soldiers
