Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to exam how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Science. With this major, I will be able to further my education in ways to be healthy and possibly learn how to help others. I decided that being a health physician or nutritionist was something that I was really interested in. This is where communication studies came in. I figured that if I minor in communication studies, I could improve my oral and written communication to better help in my future of nutrition. Communication studies was a good pick for me because, although there is always room for improvement, I can still garnish some more knowledge and information to better improve my oral skills. My personality will really fit into the communication department. I have been told about how fun the communication department can be, and how outgoing people are in the department. I initially liked this a lot because I am very outgoing myself and love to talk to people. I feel that I can be able to exhibit concise messages to people, clearly and efficiently. Communication is defined in the book as "a systematic process in which individuals interact with and through symbols to create and interpret meaning." (Wood, p.9). The definition can be broken down into four separate parts and they are as follows: process, systematic, symbols, and meaning. Process means that communication is ongoing and always in motion. Systematic focuses on how communication involves a group of interrelated parts that affect one another. Symbols are described as abstract, arbitrary, and ambiguous representations of other things. The key note on symbols is that they do not only include all language, but also include an important aspect of communication which is non-verbal. The fourth and final focus is meaning and is considered the heart of communication. The great thing about meaning is that we create it.
I found it so cool that our degree could be used in such an interesting way, which was something that I was surprised about a lot while researching. A Communications degree is very versatile. This was very apparent when I asked my professors what careers past graduates of the degree have gone onto. Both rattled off tons of different jobs in the media and corporate sectors. I was very
The fact that Health Science is such a broad major, I am most likely to specialize in a particular field, which would probably be Dental Hygienist. A Dental Hygienist is obviously not as high on the ladder as a Dentist is, however, they both perform very similar errands. For instance, they both keep track of patient’s medical records and clean/maintain patient’s oral health (This includes the teeth and
what I wanted to become. So after graduation I decided to explore my options at
I did not understand how I was supposed to know what I wanted to learn about in college. Once you get into high school, it is the first thing everyone wants to know. I started volunteering at a Food Pantry as a requirement for a class in 9th grade. I really enjoyed volunteering there and getting the opportunity to know the people I was helping. I had the opportunity to talk to a veteran who was homeless because he was an amputee and could not pay for any place to live. After hearing some people’s stories, I continued to attend Food Pantry throughout high school even after completing the required hours because I looked forward to coloring with the children who had to go with their mothers three hours early and saying hello to the
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
My chosen major is Psychology and Pre-Law. Psychology is defined as the study of the mind and behavior and how someone or a group of people think. I chose Psychology because during my middle school and high school years, I always studied how people would act and was always able to identify certain events or actions that trigger someone 's emotions or behavior to change. Most of the people I used to study was the people I had class with because most of them I saw every day and known them throughout my middle and high school years. Over the years, I learn the things that triggered changes in their attitude and behavior. I was able to identify when one of them was angry. When one was upset and didn 't want to bet bother and when one wanted to fight someone. After awhile, I realized that if I can be able to understand my classmates, then I know I can understand and help people as my career profession.
Communication is the process of conveying information to each another using words, actions, or by writing the information down to be read by another person. Communication is something that most people do at some point each day, and is an important part of life especially in a working environment. “The concept of communication is an essential part of every profession, and it is required to foster and maintain healthy relationships”( Jasmine, 2009, para. 1).
As a freshman, I was conflicted about what I wanted out of college. At the time, I naively believed that I would major in Neuroscience and Arabic while completing plenty of biomedical research on the side. Perhaps I would also sign up for a few clubs here and there and thus produce the perfect resume for medical school. In the following year, I realized that my heart was not into the breakneck agenda I planned for myself and I started to reevaluate just what exactly I wanted to pursue in my undergraduate experience. With the aid of many advising sessions I gained a clearer picture of my passions, which as I had come to realize, were what I truly wanted to work towards. Among my interests is Global Health -- in particular, I wish to learn more
I plan to double major in political science and psychology. Psychology is about understand the mind but especially understand people. To adequately understand people you must know how to properly communicate. I try to communicate in a way, that the person can correctly understand me. I believe this will be helpful when working with young adults. I believe the way in which you say things can change people's attitude towards
to manage my own health is one of the main reasons why I wanted to major in Dietetics.
Communication, as defined by Griffin is the relational process of creating and interpreting messages that elicit a response. Griffin states theory is a set of systematic, informed hunches about the way things work (Griffin, 2012, p. 4). Pairing the two together, Communication theory is using a systematic approach in order to understand the relational process of creating and interpreting messages. Many communication theories have been created to understand how and why things are the way they are. This essay will focus on one theory called the Coordinated Management of Meaning.
I remember the day vividly. I practically floated across campus with a newfound hope in my heart. Smiling at strangers all along the way, I reached my destination at the main office of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. I gleamed at the man behind the desk, "Hello. I am here to officially declare a new major." He guided me to a computer and through a few quick steps. From a scroll down menu, I selected 'English, B.A." A few brave clicks and I changed my life.
Writing assignments over this course of time have gave knowledge and taught new processes for specific types of assignments. My attitude overall this semester has changed towards the writing process, as before I only use to pay attention to developing my three main ideas. Now I give attention to throws cited, grammar, structure and organization of the paragraphs. Essay’s overall presentation, problem solution and convincible factors lead to a good essay. This essay reflects level of difficulty or ease to produce essays, all the possible tasks and processes involved, and writing process of specific essay.
One great example of a major change within on of my group settings is with my friend group. This major change happened when I graduated from college and I no longer was with my group of friends all of the time. While in school, we lived together and did everything together. We would spend almost all day with each other. However, when we graduated we all moved back home, which was all over the east coast. Three of us lived in three different parts of New Jersey, while one lived in Rhode Island, one in New York, and the other in Pennsylvania. We went from seeing each other non stop to only being able to all be together a few times during the year. Although it was upsetting, we had to learn how to communicate in different ways. We also
