College Essay
I did not understand how I was supposed to know what I wanted to learn about in college. Once you get into high school, it is the first thing everyone wants to know. I started volunteering at a Food Pantry as a requirement for a class in 9th grade. I really enjoyed volunteering there and getting the opportunity to know the people I was helping. I had the opportunity to talk to a veteran who was homeless because he was an amputee and could not pay for any place to live. After hearing some people’s stories, I continued to attend Food Pantry throughout high school even after completing the required hours because I looked forward to coloring with the children who had to go with their mothers three hours early and saying hello to the
I slowly found myself becoming more interested in the area of gender and when I realized I could go to school and keep learning about gender and race and sexuality, I realized it was something I am very passionate about and I quickly became very interested in the subject. I realized I didn’t want to read statistics that said in 1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted and then find out it has recently been updated to 1 in 4, I didn’t want to read another name of an unarmed black person killed by police, I didn’t want to know that people of the LGBTQ community are four times as likely to commit suicide, I didn’t want to hear that 1 in 12 transgender people will be murdered, I didn’t want to know all of these facts and not be somehow working to change them. Being put in the cluster may not have originally been my first choice, but it was a part of my life that finally allowed me to have passion and interest on a greater level than I had before. I did not know I could become so interested in a topic and I constantly found myself wanting to learn more. I enrolled in Women’s History and have found myself being constantly engaged and. It did not make my career choice immediately clear, but it did allow me to find something I want to learn more about and use it in order to help people in the
After volunteering three times with the social action committee and high school group from Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church in the previous years, the Houston Food Bank became very familiar both in regards of their history and how their volunteerism works. The Houston Food Bank is a non-profit organization that seeks donations of non-perishable food items to serve the low-income families in eighteen counties across Texas. However, during a recent trip to the food bank with the University of Houston-Downtown College of Business, the interactions with a larger group of classmates became more dynamic. Three main topics involving group work at the Houston Food Bank are service learning, community service, and volunteerism. Service learning
Going off to college is can be exciting because in these moments a student learn to be independent having the ability to choose how there future will end up. Some students come to college knowing exactly what there major will be. However, once they see the workload it may not be what they expected. Leaving them with the thought of changing
From time to time I volunteer to assist with distribution of food at a local food pantry at a local church. It never dawned on me that there all kinds of clients that needed the assistance until I required to write this paper for my Sociology class. I never noticed race or gender because I only saw that there were people in need based on individual circumstances. Hard times fell upon many of people and they sought assistance the best way they could. I noticed as I passed out bags of perishable foods, there were a number of people requiring assistance. There were Caucasian men and women but most were predominately African-American. Based on the initial observation, many of them were from different social backgrounds. Some of the clients were
- Fresh Foods For Families Initiative that provides free fruits, vegetables and other fresh foods to an average of 4,489 low-income families on a monthly basis ("Our Solutions," 2015).
I have often wondered what it would be like to experience the freedom of choosing my own class schedule. This has to be infinitely more stimulating and enjoyable. I am also aware that college will be significantly more challenging, but I have always found it easier to study for a class that interests me. I am willing to accept the fact that as long as I am in school, there will be required courses which may not engender excitement or enthusiasm; however, success should not be as difficult to achieve due to the maturity that is developing during this last year of high school. In addition, I have gained an understanding of the benefit of being well rounded. There is value in all classes taken. It helps to know that even my least favorite subject will contribute to the ultimate goal of personal and career development.
...as gone through those very same experiences. I arrived to college with many common misconceptions about the so called college experience. Similar to William Dereiewicz’s argument, for me college became this one thing everyone must do to earn more money. To be more successful I had to look towards the “STEM fields – science, technology, engineering, and math” (27). I am personally guilty for falling into this common misconception but have since learned that college is more about experiences. College gives you the necessary skills to function in your chosen major. I came to Montevallo as a Biology major but have now began to question that decision. Looking towards the future I am hopeful that I will adapt to my newfound independence and develop my own set of moral beliefs and similar to my parents provide my future children with better opportunities than the one I had.
It was the summer of 2013 when I was living with my grandparents and they told me about volunteering at the church. I didn’t know what they were talking about, so I took the initiative to go find out for myself that following Sunday. I was in the balcony on Sunday, when I heard the announcements saying we can volunteer for their hope food pantry. I was excited because it was going to be a chance where I can help other and get community service hours. Volunteering I began to think positive thoughts and telling myself “ I am doing a good deed”.
While starting my quest for higher education, I was unsure about what I wanted to study, and why I wanted to pursue higher education. I started working as an ELL Assistant, aiding students who are mostly refugees or undocumented immigrants. My kids come from all around the world, and are uninhibitedly excited to learn about other cultures and share their own. Working with them has taught me how to think globally and create a safe environment to experience new
Anzia Yezierska’s Bread Givers is a historical fiction novel about the lives of a Jewish family of immigrants, the Smolinsky’s, living in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 1920’s. The Smolinsky’s are a destitute family from Poland, that struggles to make ends meet, and to maintain their cultural identity after immigrating to the United States. The novel is told through the perspective of the family’s youngest daughter, Sara Smolinsky. Anzia Yezierska, an immigrant herself, is able to use her experiences in life to craft a fictional work that accurately depicts life in a struggling, immigrant family during the early 20th century. Sara grows up a first-generation Jewish American, caught between the new, American culture of her new
In the reading “Who Goes to College” written by Cecilia Rodriguez Milanes I was able to see myself in her situation. When she was a senior she had no idea what she was going to do her following year, all she knew was that her parents wanted her to attend college. She always wanted to work, she liked being able to provide for herself but her parents always told her that college would come first. She had no clue of how college worked, what classes she would take or what she would do there. After all the confusion she had of what college truly is, she began to love it. I believe that Cecilia Rodriguez chose the right path, even though she was not completely sure of what she wanted to do she always worked hard and never let any obstacle put her
Northwest School of Business and Computer Science challenge other departments in a competition to help out on campus food pantry. Nancy Z___ and Jaime Collins, professors in the School of Computer Science and Information Systems, started a building competition to see who could collect the most non-perishable donations for the Pay-It-Forward pantry. Nancy Z notes that they are including any building on campus that wants to join. The winner will be determined by the physical number of donations.
As a freshman, I was conflicted about what I wanted out of college. At the time, I naively believed that I would major in Neuroscience and Arabic while completing plenty of biomedical research on the side. Perhaps I would also sign up for a few clubs here and there and thus produce the perfect resume for medical school. In the following year, I realized that my heart was not into the breakneck agenda I planned for myself and I started to reevaluate just what exactly I wanted to pursue in my undergraduate experience. With the aid of many advising sessions I gained a clearer picture of my passions, which as I had come to realize, were what I truly wanted to work towards. Among my interests is Global Health -- in particular, I wish to learn more
The social conditions in which homeless youth find themselves, may result in absence of or poor access to nutritious food. This can be defined as food insecurity, where an individual has the inability to consume an adequate diet (Health Canada, 2012). For the youth living on streets, education becomes an obstacle, which may lead to unstable work, and therefore inconsistent income. They have to settle with low value jobs to earn just enough to feed themselves on a daily basis – the hand-to-mouth concept. Therefore, there are very limited options that the homeless youth are left with when it comes to food. When buying food, they tend to choose the cheaper alternative foods which are usually unhealthy and have little to no nutritional value to the body. Examples of these kinds of food include pizza, burgers, or perishable food items that are ready-to-eat (Dachner & Tarasuk, 2002). From our everyday experience, one can say that too much unhealthy foods can cause long-term health issues, ranging from diabetes to heart disease. Eventually, the immune system weakens, and serious complications may occur for the individual. It may be difficult for the homeless youth to access any health care services; so many times the symptoms for these diseases can go undiagnosed. At times, the homeless youth tend to go extending periods of time without food, resulting in intense hunger. Hunger is the consequence of food insecurity. It is the resulting feeling of discomfort, weakness, illness and pain – all of which play a great role on the health of youth (Jovanovic, Lecture 9). Though free food is available through charitable food programs such as food banks, they may not be accessible and travelling may not be an option, especially if they suffer fro...
America is a capitalist society. It should come to a surprise when we live like this daily. We work for profit. We’ll buy either for pleasure or to sell later for profit. It should come to no surprise that our food is made the same way because we are what we eat. We are capitalist that eat a capitalist meal. So we must question our politics. Is our government system to blame for accepting and encouraging monopolies?
this semester i wanted to gain knowledge about who i am as a person and what i wanted to be when i am older.i started this semester by thinking about what i love to do most, or in this case what i thought i would enjoy to spend time doing and learn more about it. I was thinking about possibly interning for lockheed martin but i wasn't 18 at the beginning of the semester so i couldn't do that. i had also thought about possibly doing something with ceramics, but didn't have a place to do it; or any idea what what i wanted to do with that. So i decided to try doing the baking and pastry arts. i thought to myself that, well i've always love to bake, and maybe i could possibly apply my ceramics skills to the cake making process. I had tried emailing many different companies to see if i could possibly intern with them, with no luck. instead i ended up with an angry letter from a bakery, and a bunch of “we already have an intern, im sorry.” But i wasn't going to let that deter me from what i had finally set my mind to do. so i talked with mr.. handy and we discussed online classes. I ended up taking the online courses on mondays, taking notes and learning alot. on tuesdays i decided i would gather materials and start the baking process of what i had learned the day before on monday. On wednesdays i decided i wanted to do my volunteering. i wasn't so sure where i wanted to do my service hours, but i knew i wanted to try something new and not as far away like the same cafe. my friend megan boyles said she was doing her service hours at buffalo ridge elementary and gave me the information to also get started there. I got all set up, and started to work with the kindergartners, third graders, and the ssn children (special...
