Healthy living is a huge step in life, especially in this day and age. This whole course focuses on having healthy lifestyle, making the changes necessary to maintain one, and gives the learner step-by-step instructions of where to start. There are multiple reasons why someone should make a behavior change. Some could include health reasons, to support family members, or some decide to make the change because he or she wants to live healthy. Personally, my family affects a lot of the decisions in my life. Growing up, I was used to taking care of my older sister and I was used to changing my diet to fit what plan my mom had for the week. My behavior change was always dependent on them. During this course, I learned a lot of how the social cognitive …show more content…
There were several behavior change theories that were taught through this contemporary health issues course, but only a few that are really helpful throughout this process. One theory that helped me discover what influenced my behavior was the social cognitive theory. When reading the definition of the social cognitive theory, and seeing that the theory is based on behavior being influenced by the people around someone, as well as society itself, I saw that I was affected by my family as well as the books I read. A lot of children learn from the television shows they watch, or they learn from their friends at school. Sometimes people will say someone makes the same face as someone else, or someone might say a certain saying they heard from a friend, that is all in relation to this theory. The other model that affected my behavior growing up was the health belief model. The health belief model focuses on how person was raised, and how his or her decisions and behavior are in relation to his or her beliefs. According to the Boston University of Public …show more content…
Since I believe in certain ideas that can ultimately affect my decisions. The last model that helped me through my process of change was that transtheoretical model of change. The transtheoretical model of change is an effective tool to look at when in the contemplation stage of behavior change. The transtheoretical model of change focuses on pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, stable behavior, and relapse. This model allowed me to work through the stages of change gradually, and helped me achieve my goal for behavior
One target behavior needing change is to recognize symptoms of diseases and to get regular check-ups. These two were chosen as one behavior change because they both go hand in hand in preventing diseases. For example, by physically examining myself and by determining if something is wrong by what I know I could seriously limit my chances of illness by scheduling an appointment with my doctor. By communicating this information with my doctor we can come up with a diagnosis together by evaluating all the signs and symptoms. Doing both of these behaviors is essential for a healthy disease free body because even though doctors know how to cure and diagnose diseases no one still knows their bodies better then the patient. For example, doctors may diagnose someone with diabetes due to the physical signs they can see, such as ketone body urination; However, because doctors cannot read the patients mind it is possible that the diagnosis is incorrect. One possible scenario could be that the patient drank a lot last night and so they still experiencing splitting headaches and dehydration. Ketone body urination is a sign doctors can see through a urinalysis but the headache is not and so therefore it's considered a symptom because only a patient can determine the headache as being truth. That being said communicating all this information to the doctor could accurately lead them to diagnosing and treating you for alcoholic ketoacidosis instead of diabetes. So therefore if I understand the symptoms of diseases and then schedule an appointment to communicate with my doctor and get examined then I can become as healthy and as well as possible by limiting my chances of physical harm.
My Negative eating habits and recent medical troubles are what prompted me to choose a healthier diet as my behavior Change Projects. I recently went to the doctor and I was informed of my high triglyceride levels and I was put on medication. In addition, I am vitamin D and B deficient. After, visiting my doctor I knew I had to make a change in my life. In the Past year I have gained a little over ten pounds. So not only is this project helping me improve my diet, but has also given me a new incentive to lose those extra pounds.
John, a 15 year old male, is an 8th grade student attending a local middle school. John is a transfer student from another state and he been placed into an inclusion classroom because he has been identified as a student with a disability and requires an IEP. Lately, John has been verbally and physically disruptive during math class. Some of the disruptive behaviors John often exhibit in the classroom include making loud noises and jokes during instruction, calling his peers names, physically touching his peers, and grabbing group materials. John’s teacher collected data and learned that his verbal disruptive behavior occurs 4-8 times during each sixty minute class meeting, and his physical group disruptions occur 75% of the time he works with a group. After meeting with John’s other teachers, his math teacher learned that his disruptive behavior is only present during math class. According to John’s math test scores on his IEP, his math instructor also learned that math is a challenging subject for John and he is significantly below grade level. Both John’s math teacher and his IEP team reached an agreement that they would like to decrease the number of times John disrupts instruction and eventually eliminate the disruptive behavior. The replacement behavior for John is to remain focused and on task during math instruction and assigned activities without triggering any disruptions (i.e., distracting loud noises or jokes causing the class to go into a laughing uproar, physical contact with peers, name calling, or grabbing his peers’ materials). Instead of John being punished for his disruptive behavior, the replacement behavior would allow him to remain in math class, and he will also be able to receive posit...
A of his current state of health and lifestyle behaviours (Harris, Nutbeam, Wise, 2004). For example, the model explores 6 behavioural stages; pre-contemplation, contemplation, determination, action, maintenance and termination. These stages focus on the individual’s experience, behavioural changes and processes as opposed to an event which has determined a behaviour change. Evidently, the transtheoretical model determines that Mr. A is at the pre-contemplation stage (Prochaska & Velicer, 1997). Due to Mr. A experiencing this stage, he is not planning change to his current lifestyle choices. Although Mr. A is not planning changes in the foreseeable future, the transtheoretical model in conjunction with an education campaign can inform Mr. A about different behavioural stages that he may experience. However, understanding this behaviour change model of health cannot determine why Mr. A’s his current lifestyle and behaviour (Prochaska & Velicer, 1997). Fortunately, inclusion of maslow’s hierarchy of needs psychology theory (Donovan, Egger, Spark, 2005) used in conjunction with the transtheoretical model of health, can identify barriers that are stopping Mr A from actively using information from health education campaigns to change his behaviour (Harris, Nutbeam, Wise,
Human behavior is a vital component in the sustainment of health and the prevention of illness. For some decades now there has been an increasing attention to the contribution of psychological and social components to improving and changing health. Health specialists have used the help of models of behavior change in order to reduce health risks. Through all these years psychosocial models have been a leading influence in predicting and explaining health behaviors. The most accustomed are the social cognition models. A central principle of social cognition is that people’s social behavior is comprehended by examining their perceptions about their own behaviour
A behavioral intervention plan (BIP) is designed for a specific child to try to help that child learn to change her or his behavior. Once the function of a student 's behavior has been determined, the Individual Education Program (IEP) Team should develop the behavior intervention plan A behavioral intervention plan can be thought of as a plan to support the student in order to help him or her change behavior. Effective support plans consist of multiple interventions or support strategies and are not punishment. Positive behavioral intervention plans increase the acquisition and use of new alternative skills, decrease the problem behavior and facilitate general improvements in the quality of life of the individual, his or her family, and
Therefore, TTM is not a theory but a model that examines diversified, to be compared to applications of various stages within the model to where they can have the most effectiveness (Kennedy, & Gregoire, 2009). The process of change is further recognized as: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination.
This theory is also known as the transtheoretical model. This model is based upon a person’s readiness to change to new positive behaviors. This model is broken down into six different stages of change. The first stage is precontemplation, which is in the case of a person unaware of their behavior and not ready for positive change. The next stage is contemplation, where the individual begins to recognize that change needs to take place in their behavior.
For my health behavior change project, I decide to try to see if I actually change my behavior in always drinking soda. Ever since I was little I have always drunk soda. Of course I love other drinks like lemonade or iced tea but soda is my go to drink. My mom drank a lot of soda when she was pregnant with me so I definitely think that that is a contributing factor to my addiction. She also had kept bottles of soda in the house at all times, as I was growing up. Throughout elementary school and high school, I was very active, I was on every sports team possible. I always drank water during practices and games but when I came home I always drank soda. Because I was so active and always drank water during workouts, I never really thought that
Trans theoretical Model (TTM) integrates several key concepts from several theories and applies these concepts to a variety human behaviors (Prochaska, Redding & Evers, 2008). The TTM addresses the stages of change related to human health behaviors, and one of the strength is that TTM addresses the stage prior person experience action to change his health behaviors. The stages of change include pre-contemplation, contemplation and preparation, and these stages used when individual is welling to change certain health behaviors. For example, when a young teenage use alcohol and marijuana and he does not seek information about how to protect himself by avoid drinking or consuming marijuana because of his peers. He is consider to be in the pre-contemplation stage as he does not seek information to protect himself.
This theory is adapted by an induvial by watching others. I’ve learned pretty much everything through my friends and family to not know how to fully think on my own yet. Cognitive-Social Theory focuses on Albert Bandura's two main points of Reciprocal determinism and Self-efficacy. Reciprocal determinism is when our personality is shaped by interaction among cognitive factors, behavior, and environment. This can happen in three ways by: our friends influencing us, how we interpret and react to events, and situations to which we interact. I am totally deceptible of peer pressure and easily influenced, coming to a new school and new friends influenced a lot of my decisions. My new friends influenced my clothing choice to a more “preppy” expensive style. I started to listen to country music, care about makeup, and became a lot more girly due to my fashionable down-to-earth friends of mine. Also, our personalities shape how we interpret and react to events. Because I tend to very anxious, I help sometimes my situations with a lot of high stress because I get very stressed out quickly. Lastly, our personalities help create situations to which we interact, we often treat others on how they treat us by teaching them how to treat us. Because we usually learn how to treat other by how we’re acting, this should always be a common reminder for us to observe how we are behaving. While Self-efficacy is a person's
This semester, we have learned how Health Psychology and Community Nutrition concepts can be integrated in order to produce behavior changes in individual and community health. Although these concepts can be incorporated together, they also have separate, specific ways to identify if a behavior change is needed or wanted from a specific individual or community. For example, individual behavior change is usually identified and performed by the individual. As the Transtheoretical Model of behavior change states, an individual must go through the stages of precontemplation, contemplation, and preparation before putting a behavior change into action and maintaining it. This is different in the community setting. While individuals need to be invested
PSYC321-Social Psychology taught me about the ways in which people are influenced by others, how people make decisions, inferences we make about others’ attitudes and personalities, and influence of situational and variables on behavior. I learned that people behave the way that they do for so many reasons. Behaviors are caused more by the social situation than they are by the characteristics of the individuals. One of the concepts that I recall is Lewin’s equation which indicates that the behavior of a person at any given time depends on both the characteristics of the person and the influence of the social situation. Some of the things we do can also be attributed to cultural influences and differences that exist between societies. I found
Modifying any behavior is not an elementary task. For the majority of human beings, making a change to benefit your health requires patience and effort daily to achieve results. In fact, research shows that it takes an average of “3 to 5 times before most people will attempt to change an unhealthy behavior before succeeding” (Donatelle 2013). At the beginning of the course when I was considering the various behaviors to alter I considered two behaviors that affected my health the greatest. Unlike Americans that struggle with poor eating habits (poor nutrition), excessive alcohol consumption, and tobacco use, the behaviors that I struggled with was exercise and sleep patterns.
My grandfather 's unhealthy life style has opened my eyes on how bad habits can affect my health in the long run. Now I make sure that I am always keeping myself active with physical activities. I also make sure I make good healthy choices on what I eat. I learned that I do not need to completely block everything from my healthy diet, as long as I am know how much to consume. Healthy living can reduce any health risks and complications. My grandfather 's experience made me see how important it is to follow a good healthy life style. If I want to avoid what my grandfather went through and have a healthier me I need to continue a good diet, exercising, and getting my routine checkups. People must keep this in mind we need to teach our kids a better healthy life style, and enforce more physical activity in order to break this epidemic of
