For my health behavior change project, I decide to try to see if I actually change my behavior in always drinking soda. Ever since I was little I have always drunk soda. Of course I love other drinks like lemonade or iced tea but soda is my go to drink. My mom drank a lot of soda when she was pregnant with me so I definitely think that that is a contributing factor to my addiction. She also had kept bottles of soda in the house at all times, as I was growing up. Throughout elementary school and high school, I was very active, I was on every sports team possible. I always drank water during practices and games but when I came home I always drank soda. Because I was so active and always drank water during workouts, I never really thought that
drinking soda would be an actual problem. Once I got to college and stopped being active, I never really drank water it was just always soda. When I started to gain that “freshman 15” that’s when I realized that maybe I should cut down on soda, however it was always hard for me to do that. I also started working out again starting my sophomore year but that was always on and off. During those workouts I always drank a lot of water, so at least I got some water in throughout the day. However, as an exercises science major and having to take a lot of health and nutrition classes I learned so many bad things about soda. I think that it’s important to decreases the amount of soda I drink because drinking so much sugar can cause a lot of health problems when I am older and I don’t want to have to struggle with diabetes or health issues like those. So I thought this project would be a perfect opportunity in trying to cut down on my soda intake.
One target behavior needing change is to recognize symptoms of diseases and to get regular check-ups. These two were chosen as one behavior change because they both go hand in hand in preventing diseases. For example, by physically examining myself and by determining if something is wrong by what I know I could seriously limit my chances of illness by scheduling an appointment with my doctor. By communicating this information with my doctor we can come up with a diagnosis together by evaluating all the signs and symptoms. Doing both of these behaviors is essential for a healthy disease free body because even though doctors know how to cure and diagnose diseases no one still knows their bodies better then the patient. For example, doctors may diagnose someone with diabetes due to the physical signs they can see, such as ketone body urination; However, because doctors cannot read the patients mind it is possible that the diagnosis is incorrect. One possible scenario could be that the patient drank a lot last night and so they still experiencing splitting headaches and dehydration. Ketone body urination is a sign doctors can see through a urinalysis but the headache is not and so therefore it's considered a symptom because only a patient can determine the headache as being truth. That being said communicating all this information to the doctor could accurately lead them to diagnosing and treating you for alcoholic ketoacidosis instead of diabetes. So therefore if I understand the symptoms of diseases and then schedule an appointment to communicate with my doctor and get examined then I can become as healthy and as well as possible by limiting my chances of physical harm.
My Negative eating habits and recent medical troubles are what prompted me to choose a healthier diet as my behavior Change Projects. I recently went to the doctor and I was informed of my high triglyceride levels and I was put on medication. In addition, I am vitamin D and B deficient. After, visiting my doctor I knew I had to make a change in my life. In the Past year I have gained a little over ten pounds. So not only is this project helping me improve my diet, but has also given me a new incentive to lose those extra pounds.
John, a 15 year old male, is an 8th grade student attending a local middle school. John is a transfer student from another state and he been placed into an inclusion classroom because he has been identified as a student with a disability and requires an IEP. Lately, John has been verbally and physically disruptive during math class. Some of the disruptive behaviors John often exhibit in the classroom include making loud noises and jokes during instruction, calling his peers names, physically touching his peers, and grabbing group materials. John’s teacher collected data and learned that his verbal disruptive behavior occurs 4-8 times during each sixty minute class meeting, and his physical group disruptions occur 75% of the time he works with a group. After meeting with John’s other teachers, his math teacher learned that his disruptive behavior is only present during math class. According to John’s math test scores on his IEP, his math instructor also learned that math is a challenging subject for John and he is significantly below grade level. Both John’s math teacher and his IEP team reached an agreement that they would like to decrease the number of times John disrupts instruction and eventually eliminate the disruptive behavior. The replacement behavior for John is to remain focused and on task during math instruction and assigned activities without triggering any disruptions (i.e., distracting loud noises or jokes causing the class to go into a laughing uproar, physical contact with peers, name calling, or grabbing his peers’ materials). Instead of John being punished for his disruptive behavior, the replacement behavior would allow him to remain in math class, and he will also be able to receive posit...
(1) Perceived susceptibility, or the belief that one is at risk of acquiring the disease.
Water makes up 75% of human body. It is the most important ingredient in our bodies. Today many people ignore drinking water and concentrate more into the carbonated drinks. One of the main reasons I would think people drink more carbonated drinks (such as sodas and sport drinks) is because of the way a company hype up their products and use their marketing strategies to influence people into buying them. Many benefits come out of drinking water. First, it quenches one’s thirst much better than any carbonated drinks. Second, it keeps one’s skin clear and healthy looking. In addition, it protects the human body from several diseases. Many people choose drinking sodas and sports drinks than water because water does not have much of a taste and carbonated drinks are flavored and tasteful. I guess I am one of those people who has being caught on to the hype of the soda companies. I do not really drink much water I would say I barely drink two cups a day, but I know the how good water is for my body. So I am modifying my behavior by adding more water to my diet.
The behavior change I pursued included running 3 miles a day for three days of the week. In this analysis I explore how my perceptions fit within the Theory of Planned Behavior, overview specific methods of change, evaluate pitfalls, social support, and identify potential areas of improvement.
The health behavior that I chose to modify for the better was to consume more water each day. My goal for the week was to drink 70 ounces or 8.75 cups of water each day. I chose this as my health behavior change because I know how important it is to consume water, yet I have always struggled with consuming an adequate amount each day. While growing up, I drank mostly milk and different types of juices while neglecting to drink any water unless it was before, during, or right after a sporting event. Although milk and juice are not necessarily bad for me, I know they should only be consumed in moderate amounts.
Whenever I went to class, work and went out I made sure that I had my reusable water bottle with me. Whenever I was done drinking my water I would always refill it. Mostly everywhere I went I had access to fill up my water bottle. Behavior change strategies that helped me to increase my water consumption were telling my family and friends what I was doing and they made sure that I was drinking enough water. My family and friends were very supportive during my behavior change portfolios. Also what helped me was buying a reusable water bottle with measurements on it, so I was able to see how much water I was consuming. Obstacles that impeded my behavior change would be not drinking enough water when I was at work. Whenever I had work I always use to drink most of my water before and after work. Some things I can do to over come these obstacles would finding time to drink water while I’m at work, even when I am busy and to make I have my water close by. I think this project has helped me become a healthier person because now all I drink is water and water is the healthiest drink to drink. I use to drink a lot of fruit juices like apple, grape and orange juice which has a lot of sugar. With drinking a lot of water I feel less bloated. I enjoyed doing this behavior change portfolio one and two. It made me realize how important it is to drink water and how healthy it
Lifestyles and Health Behavior According to Psychologists Psychologists have created a number of theories to explain why it is that people continue to practice bad behaviours such as smoking, when they are aware of the dangers involved. The health belief model created by Becker and Rosenstock in 1984 describes that people will only practice good behaviours such as visiting the doctor when making assessments of: Ø Perceived seriousness of health problem Ø Perceived susceptibility Ø Perceived costs and benefits. For example the HBM predicts that an individual will only quit smoking if she believes that she is likely to get lung cancer, that lung cancer is a severe health threat, that the benefits of being a non-smoker are high, the benefits of being a smoker are low. The HBM also states that we need cues to action to act as a trigger, for example an individual may quit smoking when she reads or hears about a long-term smoker dying of lung cancer.
Based on the review from Whitelaw et al., settings in health promotion are used to deal with the whole problem rather than separate the problem in every single part. It is because each health related issues do not appear individually and the health problems generally link together to create a coordinated response. Therefore, the health issues should be solved by the healthy settings that contain a holistic angle and integrate multiple setting approaches. There are five types of settings are used in health promotion and they are used to focus on different problems and the solution.
Making the switch, making the change, being able to live healthier and to be proud of that is a difficult, but amazing thing to do. Before any physical changes should be made, I think it all has to start with mental health. There are many different ways to achieve a good mental health and to get into the right state of mind to make these healthy changes. Self-acceptance, self-help programs and stepping outside of the box are all associated with mentally getting in the right frame of mind to make healthier lifestyle choices. There are many, many different ways to make this start but in my opinion, these are the most important and most efficient. There are so many benefits to making these changes such as longer life, less likely to catch disease/illnesses,
What does it mean to be healthy? It is a question that has been posed to us repeatedly in this class. With the start of a new semester, I have given up some of my healthy habits and have had to refine my views on what it means to be healthy. My view on the concept of good health is that it is anything that allows for you to live as long and as fully as you possibly can. But what does that mean exactly for me? I can’t say for certain what that answer is to me, but I can reason how my view has changed recently.
1. All About You - How healthy are you? How many times a year are you sick? What kind of sicknesses do you get? What time of year do you get sick and under what circumstances? Have you ever had serious illnesses or accidents? If so, what and when? What are your health habits (sleep patterns, nutrition, stress etc.)? Whether you get sick or not, are you often tired or not able to be alert enough to do your best work? How do you deal with this situation, if it exists?
My parents know that soda makes my stomach much bigger and they motivated me to change this habit. I used to drink a lot soda with chips, french fries, chicken and pizza. Something important that made me find out is, when we people like something, then, continuously start eating the same food for a very long time until we start disliking them. Since, I have drank soda for a long time, now I feel the same taste and the taste became old to me. My parents motivation and own realization made me accomplishing this habit. I believe, Human are creatures of habit. Overtime, We buy the same foods from the same grocery store, prepare the same recipes over and over. But, if we are serious about eating healthier and losing weight, then, it is possible to change those bad eating habits until it is too late. In order to maintain a healthy behavior, first one should start to prepare for it. However, in order to achieve these goals of health and fitness is really about involving in healthy behaviors on a daily routine basis. It does not matter how small the habit is, over time they can have a huge effect on an individual’s health. Therefore, we have to be serious about changing our lifestyle in order to achieve the goal.
I have learned a lot about my health and wellness thorough out this semester it is truly amazing. The impact these seven different dimensions have on our health they are, physical, intellectual, psychological, spiritual, social, environmental, and occupational all play a role in our health. All in so many different ways working together to make a brighter and happier healthier us. These seven dimensions make up whom we are and how we live our life is all based upon how we balance these dimensions.
