Wellness Concept Paper What does it mean to be healthy? It is a question that has been posed to us repeatedly in this class. With the start of a new semester, I have given up some of my healthy habits and have had to refine my views on what it means to be healthy. My view on the concept of good health is that it is anything that allows for you to live as long and as fully as you possibly can. But what does that mean exactly for me? I can’t say for certain what that answer is to me, but I can reason how my view has changed recently. During this semester I overcommitted and took 16 credits (I had to drop one class and go down to 13). In order to do this I have to pull some long and tedious hours at my job. I often go on less than 6 hours of sleep a night and am often up before 5 am in order to finish what I need to (whether it is a project for a client or an impromptu job for my dad). I am also unable to eat even close to healthy. Because of my lack of time I find it hard to stop and cook something, or even sit down. As of right now, it is not unfair for me to see either school, or work as something unhealthy for me. However this situation is only temporary, and soon I will not be pulling long hours I am now (therefore increasing my wellness factor). Soon I will be able to go back to my healthier (but not perfect) standard lifestyle. …show more content…
Sometimes it is impossible to strive for a higher level of health and wellness, because life is messy. There are things that, as adults, we have to get done. We get those things done by giving some things up. Maybe we live within walking distance of our work, and spend all day sitting down, so we can afford our family medical bills. Maybe we give up on a meal, or some sleep, so that our business succeeds. Everything has a price, and a reward. It is up to us to decide whether or not the price is
Animal experiments used in biological research have helped make many advancements in human medicine. Through these experiments when has achieved, a decrease in infant mortality, longer lifespan, and an increase in the quality of life (American Medical Associaton 3). Through indirect of direct experimentation, almost all medical advances can be traced back to research through animals. The control and dismissal of diseases like: small pox, poliomyelitis, and measles has been achieved with animals. Blood transfusions, burn therapy, open brain and hearts surgery where all fulfilled the same way (American Medical Association 54). "Biomedical advances depend on research with animals, and not using them would deprive humans and criminals of the benefits of research" (American Media Association74). Through animal research we could find solutions to AIDS, cancer, heart diseases, aging, and congenital defects. Like Lord Adrian said, “The use of living animals in scientific research can be considered justified if it is likely to produce appreciable benefit to society, if there is no way to conduct the research in quest...
At the turn of the new century, activists begun to protest the morality of animal experimentation: “… such methodology is far too cruel on beast, it cannot better mankind, but its lead to it demise…” Despite the rising concern for animal safety in laboratory research, federal legislations approved the practice. According to the federal bureaucrats, it is an essential tool to improve our current medical knowledge. Hence, most of the tested animals have a relatively shorter life span than human. Thus, it allows to test long-term disease in a smaller timeframe. Nonetheless, animal enthusiast request the banishment of animal experimentation in laboratory. Ergo, with our current technology, researchers are capable to reproduce the same result
Medical sciences are required to keep us healthy when there are diseases spreading and animal testing is a key part of this research. Animal test is not wrong because it is the only way to keep ahead in the arms race against disease. Disease keep changing and evolving so scientist must keep researching and making stronger, more potent medicines to combat them. Thus we must use living creatures as test subject for the medicines.
“Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans.” ( United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020 , 2011). It acts as a national guide for disease prevention and health promotion. There are various objectives and goals which serve as the guideline to achieve overall improvement in health . ‘Educational and Community-Based Programs’ is one of them. According to U.S Department of Health and Human Services the main goal of these programs is to “Increase the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based programs designed to prevent disease and injury, improve health, and enhance quality of life.” (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011). This particular goal of Healthy People 2020 focuses on increasing the number educational and community based programs to increase awareness about disease prevention and health among every individual of the society. It focuses on educating them on various topics including chronic diseases, substance abuse, prevention of injury and violence to encourage and enhance health. It emphasizes on increasing the quantity and quality of such programs so that a larger population could benefit from the program and gain effective knowledge to achieve a healthy life.
Animal testing are experiments used on animal for scientific research. In 1981 Roger Sperry, David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel were awarded a Nobel Prize for research in brain function by studying monkeys. Roger W Sperry found out that nerves linking and both hemispheres of the brain could be tempered with, without causing any life threatening events. Many animals are very similar to humans and by studying the brains of monkeys Roger W Sperry made a huge discovery about the human brain for mankind. That led to more knowledge about the brain and it's many functions. With the continuous study on animal's, many discovers have been made with gathering information on known diseases and identified new ones such as Lung Cancer, Heart Disease/Stroke, Parkinson's Disease, Neurotic Factors and Hepatitis C. Animal research is a vital necessities for medical and scientific studies to keep advancing for the benefit of humans, but the disadvantage for the animal as they are paying the price and we receive the reward to continue provide for our kind. Our medical studies has advanced since the last plague and can prevent millions of people being killed can now be treated or prevented. Without the animal research these drugs would not have been researched to be developed and produced for human consumption. With our new technology and modern technology we have the ability to perform refined surgical procedures and the medical devices to operate in. Researching in animals has been a great benefit for animals themselves with lifesaving treatment for many domestic, wild and endangered species that prevented many severe diseases like rabies, anthrax, feline leukaemia, parvovirus and other severe diseases that animals can catch, is also harmful to cert...
What does it mean to be healthy? Health is a state of complete physical , mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease, illness or infirmity. It is important to distinguish between disease and health. Disease is the prognosis of a particular disorder with a specific cause and characteristic symptoms. On the other hand, illness is the existence of disease
Health promotion is the process of improving health status of a person and prevention of disease by enabling the person to take control of their health. It is not just the absence of disease (Maben, & Clark, 1995). Health promotion is commonly used term in health care world, and in current society the promotion of health has greater significance, especially with the rise in consumerism. Health promotion is a vital concept for nursing, symbolizing notions that nursing is related today. Nurses are being urged to take a health promotion role, and are deemed by others as an ideal role for them. It is therefore crucial that nurses cognize the meaning of health promotion and also what is expected from them by undertaking this
What makes a person healthy? Surely, it is more than exercising and a proper diet. As a ten year-old girl, being healthy had one meaning to me; to eat all my vegetables and to be physically fit. I have chosen healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness.
healthy is a major component in ones’ overall wellbeing, more so mentally, but being healthy
If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a wellness lifestyle means incorporating all aspects of what it takes to flourish as a human being. It goes beyond the health of the physical body and incorporates the important social, emotional, and spiritual factors that play a part in every person’s life in one way or another. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.
The Personal Wellness Assignment helped me connect four areas of my health, sleep, nutrition, fitness, and energy. While I was documenting data every day for each of the four areas of health, I recognized some patterns. I noticed that my energy scores were overall lower on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays because I am busy with sports on those days. Also, my fitness scores were low on Monday and Wednesday because I had a lot of homework to do, so I had a minimum amount of time to do fitness. Next, I saw some connections between the areas of health. My graph shows that whenever my sleep scores are high, my nutrition numbers are high as well. This maybe because those who are sleep-deprived tend to eat foods high in fat, simple carbohydrates,
When it involves health one have to ensure that their own health is in a good condition before worrying about other life issues. Without a good health, an individual will be unable to withstand or even have a clear mind to decide or even think about other issues. In terms of my health, I would conclude that my health is average. I am not perfect as I rarely step out and exercise my body and I do not watch what I eat as much. At the same time, how do I know whether or not I am healthy or not?
What is wellness and why is it important in my life? Wellness can be broadly described as the culmination of actively making multiple choices that will lead oneself to a happier and healthier life. Wellness is not merely being in shape or having an IQ of 130. Rather, wellness is an active process through which we can better many aspects of ourselves. In general, most people wish to be the best version of themselves that they can be, leading to the crucial knowledge that wellness is an important topic for everyone.
