I portray positive leadership skills by being reliable and having a mission and a vision of succeeding. Also, communication skills are an important factor in my leadership capabilities.
Being the volleyball setter and basketball point guard, my coach relied on me to lead the team to work together. Striving to bring the best out of my teammates, I push everyone to be their best. Being a leader of a team, my teammates and coaches often looked upon me when a stressful environment approaches. I possess the trait that shows a fearless mentality; therefore, when times are tough, people look up to me on the court. This allows people to trust and follow my judgment.

By doing this I might aid them in expressing their leadership qualities, no matter their field of interest. As I help others, they might see it in themselves to aid others in finding their leadership qualities.
Many definitions exist on what leadership is. Despite the many differences in definitions, they all describe the leader as someone who influences others. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. These characteristics will create a positive workplace environment that results in an increase in productivity. Leadership is not defined by titles or salary. Leaders must acquire their skills and continue to improve on them through learning. Good leaders provide a vision and help motivate others to make that vision happen. The leader must be effective and successful in creating a strong institution.
As a college basketball player, I learned that being an effective leader did not mean that I had to be a constant bundle of energy. Rather, I realized over time it is more important to understand your teammates and what makes them tick, and to translate that knowledge into separate leadership styles to match each individual. All throughout my life I have played basketball, and my position has always been point guard. Point guard is also known as floor general and is often viewed as the most difficult position in basketball due to the responsibilities of leadership and being at the helm of the team. To command an offense in basketball requires communication, decisiveness, and confidence in what you are doing. Being a point guard for so long, these skills began to develop and seep into other aspects of my life whether it be assigning roles within a group book report or organizing a party with friends. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.

Through trial and error of coaches and leaders, books and speeches about leadership have been written in order to lead others to success. No matter what the significance of the speaker’s role, there have been just a few defining requirements and characteristics that all leaders speak of. Throughout this paper, the definition of a leadership role both athletically and non-athletically will be compared, some general and specific requirements necessary to be an effective leader will be noted, challenges presented in a sports leadership role will bring themselves to light, and ultimately how these challenges should be met will be discussed.

In order to be a good leader, one must have self-confidence, communication skills, charisma and integrity. These are the fundamental skills that make a good leader. Self-confidence is the attitude that one possesses in which one is not afraid to make decisions based on their ideas. Communication skills allow a leader to convey his or her ideas or thoughts carefully. Charisma is what makes a leader appealing to the public, and integrity is what allows the public to trust and have faith in the leader. Without these skills, a leader would just be mediocre, and not great.
Another aspect of leadership includes leadership traits such as being influential and inspirational. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.

As a point guard, throughout my life, they are the heart and leaders of the game. The specialized position coordinates basketball plays similar to a quarterback in football. We are not the primary scorers; we assist in getting the ball passed to the right player at the right time. Basketball is a team sport, but in a sense, my position resembles the leader of the team.
