Effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills are very valuable in the workplace. A meaningful communication requires both a good listener and a speaker. However, the effect of a listening style may vary depending on the occasions and situations the listener is in. Communication is an important skill for people to have in an organization. Through the interpersonal communication process between two or more people, people can exchange information, create motivation, express feelings or apply penalties for inappropriate behavior all within the workplace. With this in mind it is strange to see that many managers and employees within organizations lack effective communication skills. In fact, managers still find effective communication to be the biggest problem in organizations. Employers in the organizations of today are stressing the importance of communication more and more. Good communication skills can go beyond conversations, but employees must know how to communicate well in written report and emails, meeting with customers and signing deals. Understanding the benefits of effective communication within the firm place a focus on developing a workforce that is able to communicate within the firm and with customers, vendors and international business partners. At the same time, internal communication with upper management, peers, and subordinates require the same level of information exchange.
The average worker spends two-thousand and eighty hours a year at their place of employment. Communication within the workplace is often overlooked or not given as much importance as most people should allow, given the amount of time that is spent there. Beyond the more basic verbal speech, one must be aware of the nonverbal symbols and noise that can have an effect on communication. There are also cultural, environmental and internal factors that can effect communication and how successful it can be. The various perceptions that an individual has developed over their life can also effect communication. One’s ability to communicate effectively will determine the success and enjoyment that is to come from their job.
One’s career, school life, and even socializing are affected by communication. If you do not know how to communicate, you probably do not have many friends. Communication has been used since the days of the cavemen. When the cavemen learned to communicate they greatly increased their hunting potential. When they learned to communicate on the hunt and before the hunt, they caught much more game then when they were just randomly running after the animals with spears. In school, if teachers and students could not communicate well, how would anything ever get done? In a business, communication is the most important ingredient. Working at a corporation at a higher level, you deal with hundreds of important emails, meetings, phone calls, and other forms of communicating with your co-workers.
The knowledge managers need to possess is technologically inclined and globalized. Effective management can enhance a company’s performance by contributing to employee and customer satisfaction, productivity, and development (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2010). The first skill for managers to understand and practice is communication, because it is the foundation for all actions in the workplace and it allows the supervisor or manager an opportunity to build relationships with the overall workgroup without alienating anyone in the work environment (Roper, 2005). As a manager, it is very important to be able to communicate effectively. As Robert Kent, former dean of Harvard Business School, has said, “In business, communication is everything” (Blalock, 2005).

The listening skill is one of the most important aspects of communication process. It helps to understand and read the other person’s message. Effective listening skills create positive workplace relationships which influence our opinions and responsiveness to one another.
Effective business communication is central to the success of an individual’s career and consequently to that of the overall business entity. It would be imaginable therefore that there is some form of correlation between effective communication skills and such success. To put this into context, University of Kent (2011) has placed Verbal Communication at the top of the ten skills that employers most commonly look for. On the same note, anything that hinders effective communication is bound to have a negative effect not only on the specific message delivery, but also on the overall success of a career. In this paper, some of the barriers to effective business communication are discussed, with a few examples of how they affect the process.
Verbal and written communication skills are important competencies in the workplace, as much as 33 percent of the day is spent listening (Walker, R., 2015). Although a significant amount of our time is spent listening, this is a misunderstood skill often overlooked by professionals. “The ability to listen effectively can have a big impact on our ability to communicate well with others. Effective listening can help us build relationships, be more productive, and determine whether others are being deceptive” (Walker, R., 2015). To be an effective manager, teacher, collaborator, or leader one must be an effective listener. Effective listening is processing the information given to you by a speaker, showing that you are listening and attentive.
Clearly, communication plays a significant role in every aspect of our life. Communication is the simply act of conveying information from one person to another by using voice (verbally), gesture or body language (nonverbally), books or magazines (written), pictures (visually). The better communication skills that one has is the better the information could be transferred and received. The ability to convey information successfully and clearly is a fundamental life skill and should not be underestimated. Additional, effectively communication is the key to solve problems in any situation. With good communication skills, you can absolutely improve your professional life as well as strengthen your social and family relation ship. Indeed, communication allows us to relate and understand each other. “It also provides us with a significant frame of reference and relational context that sustain our identities.” (Imberti, 2007)
Being able to communicate effectively in a professional manner is vital in most, if not all, career paths. This statement brings up some important questions. Do potential employers really care about an applicant’s communication skills? How will I use communication skills in my own career? How has college improved my own professional communication skills? Understanding how to communicate in a professional manner can help people in their careers and I feel improving my own communication skills will benefit me now and in the future.
Effective communication in the workplace makes a huge impact in an everyday work environment. Being able to get your point across in a calm, articulate, and professional manner is essential for getting what you need done as well as making the point you are trying to make clear to the individuals that you are communicating with. Not everyone has the skills to communicate effectively, in some instances there are people who would rather send an email or a memo before communicating face to face. Communication is more than just giving relaying a message; it is about the speaker feeling heard and understood, listening to the message being relayed and giving good feedback. Communicating effectively in the workplace is very important whether someone is communicating with a fellow employee or a manager, communicating effective can make work a little easier. Whether it is verbal communication (speaking) or nonverbal communication (email, memos, etc.) it has to be clear and everyone who is involved needs to be well informed.

Supervisors and leaders in the professional workplace find that the most important factor in advancement and retain ability is effective communication. Senior level executives and human resources managers are stressing the importance of communication and providing more training for mid-level management. Emphasis is placed on communication being clear by being transmitted strongly.
