Persuasive Self-Critique
Prior to giving this speech, I felt both nervous and prepared in regards to my presentation. I felt nervous simply because I dislike being under pressure, and I felt prepared because I had a completed outline which served as a plan for the delivery. I also had notecards to aid my performance. The goal that I had in mind for this speech was to better my delivery. I have a tendency to speak too quickly when presenting, and I also tend to stay rather flat and monotonous in tone. Stuttering/stumbling over my words also tends to be an issue. I tried to improve my chances of doing well by reciting the speech aloud a few times before recording as practice. I also made sure to write down what information went with each source on my notecards so that I would not pause in an attempt to remember which

source I had used for the information that I was currently giving. In terms of what I believe I did well on, my topic choice and supporting material were points of strength.
My topic choice is one that gets attention, as many people are struck with an empathetic response, especially in regards to children. I had sources for each of my main points and sources to back up my supporting statements. Particularly, I think I did well by using statistical information, such as the number of children that go without education worldwide and the poverty rate comparison between the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa. I also remembered to cite each of these sources verbally throughout the presentation.
When it comes to weak points, I believe I still struggled with my delivery. Though I did succeed in slowing down and talking at a better pace, my tone still remained an issue. Inflection was lacking, and there was little to no variation in my voice. And though I do think that I improved on the stuttering/stumbling aspect, the problem was still present. You can see this problem surface a few times, such as when I was citing poverty.ucdavis.edu and when I accidentally said “unresolved resources” instead of “a lack of
resources”. To conclude this discussion, I will determine what grade I would give myself for this project. For my topic, I would give myself 5/5 points, because it relates to the speech assignment and is interesting. For my introduction, I would give myself 10/10, because I had an attention-getter, a thesis, and I stated my main points. For content, I would give myself an 18/20 because though I feel that I had good content, I could have used more information judging by the length of my presentation. For organization, would give myself a 19/20 because I lacked effective transitions. For the conclusion, I would give myself 10/10 because I restated my thesis, restated my main points, and ended with a call to action. For delivery, I would give myself 11/15, because I feel I had several issues with that, primarily with tone. I would give myself 10/10 for both the outline and the visual aid. My outline was fully completed, and my visual aid added interesting visuals that related to each part of my speech. This comes out to a 93/100. For future presentations, I intend to improve my tone and make it more interesting and to try and stutter less.
When I was presenting, I looked in my note cards and my powerpoint first before I looked at my audience and I noticed that I had less eye contact with my audience at this speech compared to my last speech. To improve next time, my goal is to practice with my note cards rather than just going through my powerpoint the weekend before the speech day rather than just practicing on the day I have to do my speech.
However, I did notice that there were a few faults in the presentation, one being a fault that I personally consider may have negatively impacted our presentation. It seems to me that I was not able to deliver the presentation to the best of my ability as I had let my nerves get the best of me when talking to the staff. The reason for this was that I was not comfortable with taking on the speaking role that I was given and that there were last minute changes made to my slides right before presenting. Bruner, (1996) stated that the learning process for staff relies on the “meaningful dialogue” that is presented by the presenters. In this case, I think that my speech was not strong enough to grab the audience’s attention, thus not being able to portray my message about what an Ofsted inspection is and what the results from an Ofsted inspection mean. Nevertheless, although I was not able to present to the quality that I had wished, the feedback received was reassuring that I had not done terribly bad. I was able to see myself grow as a presenter as I noticed that my
There are some things you should definitely not do when preparing for a speech. No matter how nervous you are, don't memorize your speech and don't read it word-for-word, it'll sound both fake and flat. A speech isn't a recital either. On the other end of the scale, unless you're an experience speaker with superhuman powers, winging it with no prep or notes is risky and freakin' scary. You shou...
Most of us use the art of persuasive thinking every day in one way or another. However, most of the time we do not even realizes that we are using persuasion to influence that person. Unless we use the power of persuasion intended for whatever purpose such as to sell something or influence your intended target of something. There are many ways to be persuasive, but first must understand a few things such as human nature, thinking carefully and learning to control our emotions. When we are trying to persuade someone to accept our message, we are using the art of persuasion. One way to persuade someone into your way of thinking is to appeal to his or her pride is a deceitful persuasion.
Persuasion is all around us. It is an attempt to influence us into changing our attitudes and behaviors regarding an issue (Myers). We are convinced to think a specific way, purchase certain items and services, and cast our votes for certain candidates. One persuasive method is fact-based. This is known as central route to persuasion (Myers). The other is emotion-based. This is called the peripheral route to persuasion (Myers). Based on central persuasion techniques, I have been persuaded that the minimum wage should not be raised to $15 an hour.
I said that my greatest strength was my information and the way it is presented and my greatest weakness was my transitions. I think this section of my form would be very different. Looking back at my first speech, my evaluator said that my organization was a bit jumbled and they were not sure why my speaker was there. After I read that and reviewed my speech I had to agree. I thought that was my greatest strength and I came to realize that it was not and I need to work on it more and more. I would have to say that my transitions were not my greatest weakness. When writing a paper I struggle with them, but during a speech it is different. I think that my speeches flowed nicely together. I need to work on my organization and transitions. During presentations and speeches I need to make sure everything flows and makes
The presentations were meant to test the knowledge that we gained from the assignments that we did throughout the quarter. For the presentation, I used what learned from the Rhetorical Analysis, which I incorporated the use of pathos, logos and ethos. The RIP essay that we did was solid reference for the presentation. However, I also wrote a transcript to organize and plan my presentation. The process of creating the PowerPoint was not complicated because most of the information were drawn from the RIP essay. After creating a PowerPoint, I practiced a couple of time in front of a mirror and also presented to my friend. The most important slide of the PowerPoint was the “So What” slide because it shows the purpose of this presentation (Figure-17). On the day of the presentation, I was not as nervous as I thought I would be. I believe it was because of the individual and group presentation that we did over the quarter. Overall, I enjoined this experience, and I appreciated the comments from Professor Meghdadi because they are the key to help me to become a better presenter. If I would be able to present again, I would move around instead of standing near the podium. I would also work on memorizing the materials rather than reading it off from my note
The topic that I chose to write about is “Solutions to childhood poverty”. I will be researching different resources and solutions to put an end to childhood poverty. Childhood poverty is very crucial across the states taking a toll on many innocent children and their families. When I hear childhood poverty I think of children who come from poor families who don’t have the proper resources to get their needs met. This is an issue for me because we need to be role models for these children to provide for them and give them a good life so that they can continue to procreate and set the same examples for their future families. We are the leaders who need to lead positive lifestyles with continuing our education and get out of poverty. Children look up to us and mirror our actions and learn from what we have to offer them. I’m not saying life is easy, but we must work for it. Millions of Americans are earning low class wages struggle to put food on the table and make ends meet and this can lead to many disasters like homelessness, loss of your children to DCFS and
I was a little less nervous for this speech then I was for the personal experience speech. I think that a reason for this might be that the audience was a familiar audience which gave me a little more confidence. I was also very interested in my topic and that took away some of my nerves.
3. Slides – I think my slides were very clear, and well-visualized for audiences. I guess my slides easier to understand my slide than my speech.
However, I chose to do my presentation by myself. I didn't want to compromise with another person on what we should present; I also did not want my grade to be effected by another individuals actions. This presentation went fairly well for me. I chose a Ted Talk that I had seen before; a presentation about the faults of the criminal justice system, by Bryan Stevenson. For this presentation, I created a visual very similar to the poster I used for the first presentation, and the Academic Showcase for the fall semester. I was slightly worried about this presentation because I did not have long to memorize what I wanted to say. I did create notecards, but I chose not to use them, and I'm glad I chose not to. Having confidence in my ability to recite my presentation from memory truly benefited my presentation. It allowed me to focus on the audience more: more eye contact and gestures. Overall, this presentation was the one to stress me out the most, but I also believe that this presentation could easily be considered my best presentation of the
This speech did not make me nervous nor did it stress me out. I felt comfortable talking about color blindness because I had a good understanding of what it was, making it super easy to talk about. The informative speech stuck out in my mind because it was one of the speeches that I made really good eye contact, and I felt like I was saying very useful information unlike many of my other speeches. I am so glad we did an informative speech because it help me gain more confidence in my speaking abilities. I remember during the speech, I looked at the crowd and I actually saw them being attentive, and seeing my classmates like that made me feel like I was presenting my speech very well while being
Today, I presented on my post high-school plans. My plans was going to wilkesboro community college, to become a mechanic. I feel as if I presented well but, I know there were a few things I could have done differently this time around. Some advice I would give myself, would be to practice more before I present. With practice I wouldn’t be as nervous and practice would help me from looking at the powerpoint less than the amount of times that I did. The nerves played a factor at the beginning of my presentation, when I wasn't sure how to lead into my topic smoothly. One thing I would like to congratulate myself for is doubling the time requirement. Another thing I did well at was hiding the fact that I was still a little bit nervous in the presentation.
The topic that I choose is mental health education for teenagers in school. Mental health is a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being. In schools we have classes focusing upon the physical and educational well-being of students but has ignored the mental well-being. The lack of mental health education results in people not knowing how to properly interact with mental illness both in others and with themselves. Not only is the knowledge of how to deal with mental illness an issue but the stigmatization that has derived from the lack of understanding creates a negative environment in confronting these illnesses.
As an undergraduate student, I would consider myself as an average communicator among my peers. Due to lack of experience, I struggle to execute flawless speeches. In past experiences I have worked to correct errors such as talking too fast, saying “um” and dealing with high amounts of anxiety in front of crowds. Each specific problem area, occurs in behalf of many different factors. Speech errors, such as saying “um”, and “like” often surface when a teacher or a large group of peers are listening to me talk. Speaking too fast is typically an issue that derives from my desire to finish the speech as fast as possible because I tend to get so incredibly uncomfortable when I am the center of attention. Anxiety is also an issue I personally deal
