What were three strengths of your speech?
1. Introduction – I think introduction part was good, I think I did well to make attention using guitar play of famous musician.
2. Format – I strictly followed the format of rubric that was provided by Professor Brown.
3. Slides – I think my slides were very clear, and well-visualized for audiences. I guess my slides easier to understand my slide than my speech.
What are two areas you should target for improvement?
1. Speech – I was too nervous when I was speaking. And I depended on transcript too much.
2. Timing – My speech was overtime although I prepared for timing. I think that was because of the real presentation was much slower than practice.
If you could give your speech again, what, if anything
would you change about your presentation? 1. I will try to control my nervousness better. 2. I will make my transcript more flexible to make my speech on-time and smooth in the real presentation. How much time did you spend rehearsing and timing your speech? Did it help your presentation? I spent about 2 hours for rehearsing and timing (exclude preparing slides). In my opinion, it helped me, however, I could not speak like my practice speech on the real speech. I think I need to consider this for my future speech.
I choose the ted talk of journalist Jon Ronson: Strange answers to the psychopath test. His speech had various strong points and personal experiences. He uses various strategies to hook his audience and get his point out. He engages with the audience and gets them to listen he keeps them engaged by having humor and telling stories. He uses statistics to infom the audience and even tries to calculate how many psychopaths there is in the audience. He has verbal and nonverbal cues that connect is main points.
The speech delivered by Dr. Randy Pausch is a powerful and influential public speaking, including various communication components that we should pay attention to and learn when we present our speeches. This lecture is divided into three parts: My childhood dreams, enabling the dreams of others and lessons learned. Dr. Randy Pausch told his audience what he believed and valued with his proper body languages, effective and efficient delivery and interesting and attractive visual aids. From this speech, it can be told that the speaker’s strengths and effectiveness from the lecture, which can reflect my problems as a communicator and a public speaker
I have improved most in the WOVE area of visual communication this semester. Beginning the course, I did not know the correct way to create a powerpoint presentation that supports the speaker without being a distraction. This semester, I learned that only minimal wording is required on the slides to deliver the main points. The majority of the slideshow can be pictures, charts, or graphs, so long as it remains relevant to the topic. I specifically remember using this new technique for my part of the visual analysis presentation, keeping my bullet points to under five words, if possible.
While watching my video I did notice that I was able to understand and clearly know what the main point was. I spoke in a clear and a tone loud enough for everyone to hear. The speech was organized very well, so one idea or thought flowed to the next. I don’t think I need to change anything in regards to my central idea being clear. I was satisfied with that part of the speech.
However, I did notice that there were a few faults in the presentation, one being a fault that I personally consider may have negatively impacted our presentation. It seems to me that I was not able to deliver the presentation to the best of my ability as I had let my nerves get the best of me when talking to the staff. The reason for this was that I was not comfortable with taking on the speaking role that I was given and that there were last minute changes made to my slides right before presenting. Bruner, (1996) stated that the learning process for staff relies on the “meaningful dialogue” that is presented by the presenters. In this case, I think that my speech was not strong enough to grab the audience’s attention, thus not being able to portray my message about what an Ofsted inspection is and what the results from an Ofsted inspection mean. Nevertheless, although I was not able to present to the quality that I had wished, the feedback received was reassuring that I had not done terribly bad. The assignment I choose is my passion speech. This assignment involved me thinking about what I was passionate about and make a speech on my passion. Mr. Wilcox expected me to have three to two minute speech with me having to remember some of my essay. This particular assignment is related to my 30 second speeches when I am presenting my tutorials in my group. Mr.Wilcox made us do a passion speech so we could practice talking in front of people. Throughout the assignment I wasn't expecting myself to earn an A because I am a shy person when it comes to presenting.
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
For the body of the individual presentation it consisted of three main points: family, school/community, and work. My family section had a few points that were broken down to areas that has formed me such as my parents being divorced and family trips. Moving forward to the section of school/community is where the points started to weaken of how it has helped me as an individual. I described topics of how the community and school came together, but I did not expand on all my personal contributes. I had a lot of information on my mind, but the tension obstructed the flow of my words. Therefore I could not speak continuously, and accurately to the point. The fact that English is not my native language might have also been a reason for this. Therefore I was not satisfied with my performance.
