Persuasion in My Personal Life Persuasion is all around us. It is an attempt to influence us into changing our attitudes and behaviors regarding an issue (Myers). We are convinced to think a specific way, purchase certain items and services, and cast our votes for certain candidates. One persuasive method is fact-based. This is known as central route to persuasion (Myers). The other is emotion-based. This is called the peripheral route to persuasion (Myers). Based on central persuasion techniques, I have been persuaded that the minimum wage should not be raised to $15 an hour. First, central persuasion information taught me that businesses would be forced to make extreme changes if the minimum wage is raised to $15 an hour. Some businesses could be required to hire fewer employees to compensate paying for the higher wages. Likewise, low-skilled employees become expensive to keep, hurting marginalized employees with the least experience. Fewer employees being hired, with low-skilled employees being fired, means higher unemployment, and that becomes a burden to the American taxpayer. The worst case scenario is that some small businesses could be forced to close their companies for good. Furthermore, many who live in poverty may not work, and thus are unaffected from the increase. At one point, I believed that raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour was a tremendous idea, but once a conservative friend of mine gave me the facts and rhetoric on how it would hurt small businesses and the United States financially, I was persuaded to believe that the minimum wage hike was not a helpful idea. Raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour has been extensively debated over the last year or so. Minimum wage is the undermost wage allowed by law to be given to an employee for their services. Introduced in 1939, its purpose was to stabilize the economy, which was healing from the Great Depression. Most importantly, it was designed to protect the health and welling-being of employees. Currently, the Federal Government 's minimum is $7.25 per hour ($14,500 per year). The ones in favor of the increase are saying that it used to be a living wage; however, now it is not and it now needs to be line with changes to the cost of living. Persuasion is a process by which the persuader, through communication, gains the approval or support for the topic (Let's Compare Motivate and Persuade, 2013). The arguments to motivate this change in thinking comes through careful use of rhetoric, but one must also be able to define the six principles of persuasion in social psychology: “Reciprocity, Scarcity, Authority, Commitment and Consistency, Consensus, and Liking” (McLean, 2010, p. 521) and be able to recognize them as they are taking place. Then, one must carefully apply these concepts in order to find the means to effectively facilitate persuasion (p. 518).
Persuasion is a commonly used communication technique that allows us to socially influence a certain topic positively or negatively. Its purpose is to help affirm or nullify an idea, belief or attitude. Sometimes the exact topic is very detectable in communication such as during debates but other times it displayed a little more subtly. Persuasion is more than just verbally speaking. Non-verbal communication such as body language, tone and pitch of the voice can also add to the affirmation of the topic.
