As an undergraduate student, I would consider myself as an average communicator among my peers. Due to lack of experience, I struggle to execute flawless speeches. In past experiences I have worked to correct errors such as talking too fast, saying “um” and dealing with high amounts of anxiety in front of crowds. Each specific problem area, occurs in behalf of many different factors. Speech errors, such as saying “um”, and “like” often surface when a teacher or a large group of peers are listening to me talk. Speaking too fast is typically an issue that derives from my desire to finish the speech as fast as possible because I tend to get so incredibly uncomfortable when I am the center of attention. Anxiety is also an issue I personally deal …show more content…
Prior to giving a speech, listening to soothing music reduces stress and anxiety. By partaking in this method the speaker’s state of mind would be more stable, enabling them to project the speech clearly to the audience. In my personal experience, this procedure has helped me prepare for a speech because it gave me the ability to focus on something else instead of dwelling on negative emotions. An additional strategy a speaker can use would be to give themselves positive reinforcement. This method is successful because it allows me to motivate myself to perform my speech with confidence in order to keep the attention of the audience. To achieve this, I tell myself that I will effectively convey my message flawlessly just like I did while practicing. By doing this, the speaker will gain their attention to relay the information in a coherent manner. On the other hand, progress with nonverbal communication would include showing more gestures and including interactive features to incorporate the spectators. Due to this, the participants would have the impression that the info is credible and relevant. In my personal experience, this can be achieved by recognizing the difference between the successful and unsuccessful verbal and nonverbal communication techniques other classmates have

Free speech on college campuses has been a heavily debated topic in academia and in recent years it has made a comeback. There are many perspectives to the restriction and allowance of free speech. From the past court cases the rulings decided student’s speech can be punished if it disrupts school, is indecent, and if it is associated with the school. (Ross 176). However, this was in the case of high school students and during that time the court had ruled that there is a difference between a high school environment and a university environment. “In 1981, the Court declined to protect university students from religious messages because university students are young adults who are ‘less impressionable than younger students’” (Ross 176). If you were to switch style, whispering at the party and yelling at the library, then, your communication style will be ineffective to day the least. In both situations, you are engaging in the same communication process, but the rhetorical situation requires you to act different ways. Verbal communication is simply using spoken language to convey a message to other people. However, nonverbal communication is far more complicated, it contains the use of object, body language, actions and symbols to show meaning to people.
Currie (2007) states Effective Verbal Communication is important when building relationships with clients, customers, and the media (pg 1). Verbal communication is important along with listening skills so that communication between parties is clear. Verbal communication is accompanied by sign language called non verbal communication. This communication can be expressed in many ways: One can ask another “How are you today” Reply, “I’m okay” but the shrugging of the shoulders, squinting of eyes and lips closed tightly together gives another answer.
However, after I learn the concept, I found it is important in our lives. To talk about why this lesson was important, at first, “More time is spent communicating nonverbally than verbally” (150). For example, we will use eye contact and facial expressions to give feedback of our group presenter. It is important to let them know if we understand or not. Then “Nonverbal messages are usually more believable than verbal messages” (151). The emotion is the thing that people always cannot hide so we can know more information nonverbally. Therefore, after I learn this important lesson, I found more ways to understand and communicate with my
Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. In every profession communicatiis important. Good communication skills, no matter what you plan to do in life, will help you out greatly and improve your chances against a harsh job market. I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. One can not learn public speaking from a book.
Conversation is defined as an “informal interchange of thoughts, information, etc., by spoken words; oral communication between persons” (“Conversation”). This informal talk gives people the opportunity to open up to others, analyze other’s perspectives, and share ideas and interests. Conversation is an intimate experience that initiates bonds between all who are involved. These bonds unite people, creating a sense of community. A community is described as a group of people that live in the same place or have common interests. In a community, people are proactive and are involved. Also, they truly care about the wellbeing of a common interest or activity. Conversation helps to bring people together in a community by giving a voice to all who are involved and uniting all as one.

I did have great communication skills but whenever I had to communicate in front of a group of people for some reasons I fail miserably. My public speaking fears had become worst when I got to college. I was required to take a public speaking class which I couldn’t escape in since it was one of the required courses for my degree. My first day on that class is so far the most terrible day of my life. I was asked to introduce myself to the class using only one word to describe me, the moment that my name was called it felt like I was walking into an unfamiliar galaxy. I am standing in front of a classroom full of strangers doing nothing but looking around and
Non-verbal communication doesn’t involve words, but is a powerful form of communication. The way your body language is tells the other party whether or not you are receiving their message or just listening. When your nonverbal behaviors align with the words you’re saying, they indicate to the person you are communicating with that you are trustworthy. When non-verbal behaviors do not align with your message it sends mixed signals on what you are trying to convey. When communicating in business it is imperative that you are conscious of your own body language and nonverbal cues as well as that of

In this civilization, speech is not enough for society. So people write down what they want to say to show their past. Also, they can learn things from the history. If people had not written anything down from the past, we could not see whether the history was doing well or not. Also, we could not learn lessons from the blunders of the past. Moreover, why people are compelled to share themselves through writing not just speech is that to have standard way to show respectfulness to others, to make people able to conceivably imagine from verbal things, but also to make academic material more convincible.
