Based on the small group that I joined in communication class, I will talk about what is working well and what is getting in the way in our group. Then I will discuss about what I can do to improve the group and the things about group project if there is a chance for a start over again. At last, I am also going to talk about what I think that I learned is an important lesson in this semester. At First, we are working well on roles. For example, in our five people group that three boys are the “Maintenance roles” which defined as “a group’s social atmosphere” (98). To be more specific, they will contact group members before group meetings to make sure that everyone finish their own parts. They are more socialize and always contact. On the other hand, two girls were more like “task roles” and “they help accomplish a group’s task.” (98). We always check our group work deadline. We divided works for our group members when we have group work. We are the roles for keeping the group on track. Then be on time in group meeting is getting in the way. However, after I learn the concept, I found it is important in our lives. To talk about why this lesson was important, at first, “More time is spent communicating nonverbally than verbally” (150). For example, we will use eye contact and facial expressions to give feedback of our group presenter. It is important to let them know if we understand or not. In every society nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that a person can use to interpret the message that is being delivered. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.

With a deeper understanding of nonverbal communication and how to properly apply these learned functions, leaders arise. With numerous decisions to be made, and various inputs to evaluate, the pace of leadership has surely accelerated in today’s world. The intellectual and physical demands of leaders have been exaggerated and intensified. Utilizing all of the nonverbal components as a whole is the key to distinguishing a leader from the common individual. Nonverbal communication is a powerful tool when it comes to establishing, building and maintaining credibility and leadership.
Nonverbal communication is rich in meaning. Everyone communicates through nonverbal gestures and motions. I realized that you can decipher a lot from an individual or individuals by just paying close attention to what they do, and that words are not really necessary. Watching two people interacting, I figured that they are really close by their space communication, eye language, and body movements.

In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. I participated in family team meetings (FTM) a lot when I worked regular investigations. The purpose of the meeting was to bring the family, CPS and any family support in to discuss why CPS was involved and come up with a plan to resolve the case and prevent any further cases. My role was to discuss the concerns that the agency had with regards to the facts found during the investigation that I conducted. When an FTM was held that meant that the agency was at a point where the family and extended family had to get involved in order to support the children and ensure their safety.

Communicating in a world of diversity may require more than just a transmittal of words. Communication sometimes require more than one process depending on who you are communicating to. Communicating in a world of diversity has many benefits. Communication is split into two parts which is listening and speaking. Speaking as well as listening goes hand in hand with each other. Speaking and listening is verbal and nonverbal. Listening is one of the most important aspects of effective communication (Robinson, Lawrence, and Jeanne Segal). It’s not always what is being said but rather what is being done. Non-verbal communication is a big part in communication also. Both the talker and listener are participating in non-verbal communication. Communication is really important in today’s world, it used every day both verbally and non-verbally. As important as the words are to speak to one another, nonverbal communication is just as important. As said by Dr. Maeta B. I learned a lot about Human Communication in this class when I read the chapter about Nonverbal Communication. Nonverbal Communication is the process of using messages that are not words to generate meaning. I learned that it happens every day. I also learned that is very hard to read or understand depending on the person you are speaking to or with. Verbal and Nonverbal codes work in conjunction with each other. The words we speak or say are used in conjunction six different ways: to repeat, to emphasize, to complement, to contradict, to substitute, and to regulate. I never knew until reading this chapter that we do these things all most every time we communicate. These are things I took for granted until now. I now know that I will pay
