Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. I feel like I made really good eye contact in most of my speeches because I was always taught to look someone in the eye when I spoke to them. I also have really good memory so I could easily remember things about a topic or about a memory to share with the class and be able to tell the story or information correctly. My eye contact was a really big strength for me and I think it helped me in a lot of the speeches I did. The speech I think I made the most eye contact and was able to keep my thoughts together, was my impromptu speech when I talked about me and Arley’s relationship. I was able to give so much eye contact because I was not nervous and was able to speak about something I knew a lot about and the topic fit me fairly well. My other strength was memorization and that came in handy during my informative speech. I felt like my informative speech was one of the best speeches I gave due to the knowledge I had of the topic. This speech did not make me nervous nor did it stress me out. I felt comfortable talking about color blindness because I had a good understanding of what it was, making it super easy to talk about. The informative speech stuck out in my mind because it was one of the speeches that I made really good eye contact, and I felt like I was saying very useful information unlike many of my other speeches. I am so glad we did an informative speech because it help me gain more confidence in my speaking abilities. Few people are fearless speakers. As students, we generally feel the rumble of butterflies in our stomachs, but the most we have to lose is a good grade.
I felt very nervous prior to the session beginning. I get anxious speaking in front of groups of people, and I was fearful I would say the wrong thing, or not follow the Solution-Focused plan correctly. I was also thinking about what may happen and how the clients would react, and what they would say as the conversation progressed. However, after a few minutes, I started to feel more relaxed, and forgot about the classroom full of people who were watching me. I started to feel like I was in a real session with real clients, and my gut feelings just started to take over my nervousness.
While watching my video I did notice that I was able to understand and clearly know what the main point was. I spoke in a clear and a tone loud enough for everyone to hear. The speech was organized very well, so one idea or thought flowed to the next. I don’t think I need to change anything in regards to my central idea being clear. I was satisfied with that part of the speech.
However, I did notice that there were a few faults in the presentation, one being a fault that I personally consider may have negatively impacted our presentation. It seems to me that I was not able to deliver the presentation to the best of my ability as I had let my nerves get the best of me when talking to the staff. The reason for this was that I was not comfortable with taking on the speaking role that I was given and that there were last minute changes made to my slides right before presenting. Bruner, (1996) stated that the learning process for staff relies on the “meaningful dialogue” that is presented by the presenters. In this case, I think that my speech was not strong enough to grab the audience’s attention, thus not being able to portray my message about what an Ofsted inspection is and what the results from an Ofsted inspection mean. Nevertheless, although I was not able to present to the quality that I had wished, the feedback received was reassuring that I had not done terribly bad. English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
Although I did not necessarily enjoy the presentation aspects of this class, I definitely feel like I have improved as a presenter throughout the course of this class. The first presentation was pretty nerve-wrecking, which is my normal response whenever I have to present in front of people. With each presentation I have felt myself become more comfortable in front of people, less dependent on my notes, and just more confident in general. Even though I doubt public speaking will ever be one of my strong suits, I have become much more at ease with presenting and speaking in front of other people. Especially for the presentations in this class, it was reassuring to know that I was the person who was—in theory—an expert in my topic and most people were hearing this information for the first time, which eased a lot of the pressure when it came to
I really don’t like to give speeches, especially in front of all my friends, but I knew that once I walked into my 2nd period advanced English class, I would have to. I knew that what was about to come after I was finished reading it, was not going to be pretty. I could imagine that what I was about to read would stick with me for the rest of my high school career at Nelsonville-York high school with all of my friends teasing me about it, and my teacher, Mrs. Maria , teaching all of her future freshman classes of what not to write about. As I saw all of this happening, I knew I had to prepare to face the consequences that would come when I was finished. Little did I know that this speech was going to be a huge turning point of my high school career, and affect the way I give speeches and how I talk to people.

Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. While presenting, my leg began shaking! It took me by surprise because this has never happened before. I spoke with no signs of nervousness, but my leg shook like I was. I do not know if it was noticeable to my peers, but it was something I could evidently tell while bestowing information upon my classmates. The informative speech has been different than my SHIELD speech because my the informative contains more historical facts rather than personal information. My topic was also over something I was not truly passionate about. I know I should have done something that came from my heart, but I felt like I overanalyzed multiple topics that I had in mind doing. So, I concluded that each would be better for a different kind of speech. The SHIELD speech was definitely something that placed closer to my heart, making it easier to share with my class. Something I will do differently next, is practice more. I mentioned that earlier in my other journal, but I am saying it again in this one. Practicing more is one of my goals for oral communications so, I will continue to pursue it until I reach it. Some strengths that I use while giving a speech are the use of different pitches, the use of different volumes, the use of different facial expressions, and good posture. Some weaknesses that I have while giving a speech are the use of vocal fillers, the too fast of a rate at which I speak, the lack of eye contact, and the nervous movement from my body. I know that I have a lot to improve on when it comes time to get up and speak in front of others. However, I do feel that only after three speeches in my public speaking class, I have grown and become a better public speaker. Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
My journey as a public speaker over the semester was somewhat challenging. Before I took this class, I believe my public speaking skills was poor. I usually present my speeches reading off the slides which makes it very boring for the audience. I knew that eye contact is very important to maintain during the speech. I know that public speaking skill is a skill that is commonly used in almost all occupations. So, I decided to take this courses, in order to improve my public speaking skills even though I’m not very good at talking in front of a large audience.
Verbal and non-verbal skills are other important techniques relevant to public speaking that greatly contributed to my personal development as a public speaker. During my lessons, I did learn that body language is an important aspect of speech delivery. Facial expression and body movement really matter to an efficient public speaker. Learning how to tailor my speech to suit my audience’s needs through non verbal and verbal techniques will actually contribute to my success as a communicator.
