In a professional environment, there are many supervisors who have little to no writing experience before they start a management position. This largely attributed to employees of companies maintaining a high work ethic for many years and proving they have what it takes to take over these leading roles (Mabrito, 1997). When these employees started their jobs they likely did not have the expectation that they would move to such an important role in the company so furthering their education after high school was not a priority. This can cause a poor representation of the company from the less than professional writing skills a person may have. For these businesses, it would be beneficial to actively seek out employees who they see potential in and send them to further their writing …show more content…
skills so when the time comes they are able to fill the role they have been appointed to.
In late 2016 I started a job as a diesel mechanic. This was a fairly new experience for me and I had some idea of what I was getting into (e.g. heavy lifting and troubleshooting problems drivers have on the road). What I didn’t expect is writing complete and detailed accounts of what problems I found and how I went about fixing them. With my limited writing experience in a professional workplace this was difficult. I was unsure how I was expected to write and had to ask other employees for advice on multiple occasions. My verbal communication and personal relation skills were something that I had always prided myself on so when it came to my poor writing skill I was not satisfied. After a year of work, I felt like I had come along way, but was still not on the level I wanted to be on. I had been consistently communicating
with my “big bosses” and they mentioned a program that would allow me to go to school and better myself while still working full time. This would give me an opportunity to learn how to properly write and respond to work-related material. More importantly, it could bring a promotion so that I could provide guidance and give suggestions on directions I think would be best for the multi-billion-dollar company I work for. If management cannot convey ideas or new mandatory requirements in a professional way, then they will not be taken seriously no matter how important the matter may be (Bethel University, 2010). While learning these skills in school I will be able to actively practice at work by trying new writing techniques and learning what works for me and what doesn’t. By the time I graduate, I will become a strong writer and be well prepared for the career ahead of me. If a business can start an employee on a dedicated academic plan early in their career they are much more likely to excel at work and gain respect from the company as a whole. Especially with all of our technological advancements it is more important than ever to become a communication master and practice at every opportunity that is given. With proper direction and the determination from an employee, it is possible to cut out the poor, inadequate writing that is seen on a daily basis and see communication that is top quality and revered by peers.

Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
I never really considered myself an "acceptable" writer. I always would panic after realizing I have to write a paper because I never feel prepared or ready. After my semester of English 1102, I realized that I can spot good points for my argument, but I had difficulty analyzing them in terms of my thesis. My thesis and topic sentences were not my strong suits because I either don't dig deep enough, or I panic and add so much to my thesis/topic sentence that the syntax and diction is awkward and confusing. I would spend hours trying to fix these errors because of writer's block and anxiety; however, as the semester kept going, I found it to be easier to fix the errors in my paragraph by asking myself how to improve my paper and asking my peers
My relationship with writing has been much like roller coaster. Some experiences I had no control over. Other experiences were more influential. Ultimately it wasn’t until I started reading not because I had to read but because I wanted to, that's when my relationship reached change. I would have probably never cared about writing as I do today if it weren't for the critics in my family. When I was a child, my aunts and uncles always been in competition with who's child is better in school. I have always hated reading and writing because of the pressure to prove my family wrong was overwhelming for me. I had to prove them wrong and show them that I was capable of being "smart" which according to them was getting straight A's in all your classes.
When I read “Proficiency” by Shannon Nichols I really felt for her. I understood and resonated with her story perfectly, especially when she stated “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about.” (83). After I failed my writing assignment I was so embarrassed and didn’t want to write again but obviously, I had to. I always doubt the things I am going to say or which order I am going to organize the essay in. I try so hard to make sure all my sentences are cohesive and all my ideas connect to each other and the main concept but sometimes it just seems that when I keep messing with one little sentence or paragraph I just makes things worse.
After reading the essay On Writing by Stephen King, it was apparent that improving writing skills is important. The beginning to forming a better career is to first read because “one learns most clearly what not to do by reading bad prose”. (King) Improving writing skills can further improve verbal communication skills and help to advance in life. When someone improves their writing skills, they can then improve their verbal communication skills. Improving both verbal and written communication skills will lead to a better career path.
So far this year, I felt pretty satisfied with my progress this semester. I feel like I am slowly adapting to the new way papers and assignments are handled. All my college work depends solely on me now. No one is going to baby me anymore and whether I succeed or fail depends on how much effort I put into something. For the first time in my life I wrote a paper. Not just a five paragraph essay but actual pages, which is extremely challenging. It’s also been my first time studying for five hours straight so I can pass an actual test. I didn’t know I possessed this level of dedication, it’s probably because it isn’t free.
writing” by R. Ramsey, the ability to write competently is a requirement for success in any field.
In my summer, timed writing piece I was very brief and uninformative. I was writing just to finish the essay rather than write a good piece for someone to read. Such as, “Finny struggles believing that Gene did this to him”. I could have written it as, Finny struggled to understand why Gene would do something like that to him, and even denies that he did it in the first place. There was a lot I could have fixed in that essay, but I chose not to because I didn’t want to spend any more time on it. In my most recent timed writing my word choice is limited and is only written to get my point across “People are naturally kind creatures. We are social beings who can share things and not fight all the time.”. I don’t have any evidence to back this statement up and I could have made it flow better. Throughout the year I seemed to get better in some places and get worse in the places where I already was good at. Timeliness was also something I struggled with throughout the year and I am very thankful for all the extensions I got and for Mrs Moore to be so understanding. I think I may have grown a little bit now that I think about it more, but I still think I can do
“Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go” (BrainyQuote). It is shown in this quote that when you begin writing you know nothing, you have to learn and develop a writing style as you write more, it takes time to become a good writer. Throughout my many years of writing, my writing styles have changed greatly. In middle school I had never written an essay based on a book. This year I have gone from being utterly confused on how to write an essay about a book, to having a full understanding of what I’m writing. This year is the year that I have grown more than any other, all because of my teacher, Mrs. Johnson. She has helped me become the best writer I can be this year. In this essay I will reflect on how my writing
I’ve always had problems with my writing and I’m still having them. I can do any exercise in math but when it comes to write something my mind goes blank. With this course I can easily notice that my writing skills have improved. I took ENG 081 before this class and the teacher taught me completely different about some material we covered in this course.
Some of the complications I face with writing is not using enough body paragraphs, forgetting a thesis statement, lack of word choice, punctuation errors, etc. I am unaware at times of my mistakes, but I always try to correct them. I have also come to terms with my strengths and weaknesses as a writer.... ... middle of paper ...
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
