Being a part of Appalachian State University’s Honors College would be an amazing privilege. According to the university, the Honors College has been providing superior education to intellectually-motivated students for more than thirty five years. Being a part of the Honors College would help me promptly reach the personal, intellectual, and professional goals I set for myself as well as optimize my college experience.
My Legacy Leader is LTC Brian A. Coppersmith, USA, Ret. LTC Coppersmith exemplified Army leadership from his character, presence, and intellect to his ability to lead, develop and achieve. LTC Coppersmith’s leadership ability directly affected me as a Human Intelligence Collection Sergeant operating under his command in garrison pre-deployment, and while deployed forward to Iraq. The example that LTC Coppersmith set for me is the foundation that I have used to guide each of my actions on as a leader. It is my hope that I will be able to positively influence and inspire at least one Soldier in the same manner that LTC Coppersmith inspired and influenced me.
A few leadership experiences that I have had come from athletics. I started playing athletics when I was in the fifth grade and I still continue to play as a senior. Over the years I have had the ability to be one of the leaders of both the softball and basketball teams for my school. Being a leader has taught me to use leadership skills that I will need later in the future.
I do not like my school. All City Leadership Secondary School’s (ACLA) population of approximately 400 people consists of 6th to 12th grade students as well as staff members. We’re our own little town, where everyone is acquainted with one another. Staff members greet us each morning by saying “good morning” with astounding enthusiasm. On a typical school day a student, having been taught the importance of courtesy, does not pass by an adult without saying, “good morning, sir/ma’am.” The adult, assuming he/she heard the student, will acknowledge him or her and say “good morning”. They then separate to go about their days. I have attended ACLA since 6th grade and had the option in 8th grade to apply to highly ranked schools like Stuyvesant
I have participated in the school’s marching band for four years has a member of the color guard. The last two years I have even earned a leadership position. From being in marching band, I have learned the ability to look for a bigger picture in things. For instance, something that may not seem clear now may take a true shape in time. I have also gained working experience through my two lifeguarding jobs from the last three years. I have learned how “size up” a situation and see how to properly deal with a problem. I have also learned, through both commitments, how to time manage myself and both achieve in activity/work and in school. I believe that through these experiences, I can bring a different perspective to the Honors Program’s community and help better it in any way possible.

When I am at my best. I am able to prioritize with leadership the needs of the people and/or organization that I am working with before mine. I strategically plan to overcome whatever challenge emerges in the developing or planning of a team project. In addition, I am dedicated and positive throughout the entire process. I entered the center completely unprepared for the level of education and hard work that the center demanded, but thrived knowing that I was helping heal animals in peril (many of whom were there directly because of human actions). After many hours of feeding, cage cleaning, and handling dangerous patients, I felt as though I had learned as much from the animals as I had my teachers. However, I also found myself frustrated more often than not when I found a limit to my ability to aid animals.
