My vision for leadership in an educational setting is to be an effective leader. School Leadership: Handbook for Excellence in Student Learning identifies four core leadership behaviors associated with student learning: setting direction, developing people, leading change, and establishing managerial order.
Effective leaders set direction. This means that the leader of the school sets a focus or a goal for the school community. The goal that is set for the school must be something that all staff and teachers can support and work to; otherwise, the goal will never be achieved.
Effective leaders develop people. An effective leader will interact with students and teachers. They are highly visible throughout the day and communicate formally
and informally with the teachers and parents of the school. Effective leaders inform teachers about new practices and provide opportunities for teachers to learn and grow as professionals. An effective leader also models the behaviors and attitudes they want their staff members to adopt. Effective leaders lead change. This change can be first or second order. First-order changes are superficial and generally do not disrupt the current way of doing things. These are changes that might require new curriculum to be taught, but the way of teaching is not changed. Most people involved in first-order change may not notice a difference in their day-to-day routine. Second-order changes may change the way that teachers, students, and staff are used to doing things. Second-order changes require everyone to learn new things and adopt new beliefs. This change would require the leader to know his or her staff very well and what they are willing to do for the school in order for it to work. Effective leaders establish managerial order. Formerly, managerial order meant discipline but now it also includes safety. Students need to feel safe in the school that they attend, and it is up to the principal to see that this happens. Teachers and staff also need to feel safe, and they look to the leader to ensure this happens. The school leader(s) need to do everything necessary to ensure that the school day runs smoothly without any interruptions or distractions to learning. My day-to-day interactions with subordinates, parents and my superiors would all be the same: with respect and honesty. Struggling and new teachers would be provided with peer coaching and mentoring to help improve classroom instruction. I want everyone in the building to feel that it is a safe space of collaboration and success. I want those that work with me to be able to trust me. Without trust, relationships cannot be built. Student achievement would be first on my list. All decisions made would be with student’s best interest in mind, no matter how hard it is on adults. Diversity would be recognized and celebrated. Learning about the world and other cultures would become a part of the curriculum. Parents would be invited into the school to partner with teachers and staff on their child’s education. A true partnership between home and school would be created and fostered year to year through volunteering, parent education and school and community celebrations. Corporations would be encouraged to bring their expertise to the students so that a connection between schoolwork and community work can be created and fostered. When I am a school leader I want to be as effective as possible so that everyone else can be successful in his or her job.
“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others” (Welch). Leadership is inspiring others to learn more, do more, and become more. Ineffective fail to possess certain characteristics which effective leaders do. Willingness to help others, selflessness, and strictness; these are the qualities of a both good and effective leader. Without these qualities, leadership would fail and being a leader would mean nothing.
DEVELOPMENT & IMPLEMENTATION OF A SHARED VISION: Education leaders facilitate the development and implementation of a shared vision of learning and growth of all students, (1C) Implementing the Vision connection to my action plan. I collaborate with key stakeholders with the intention of fostering a shared vision, one that is proactive in nature. Proactive interventions, such as the development of a BIP will aid in a shared vision of learning and growth for all students regardless of ability levels. INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP: Education leaders shape a collaborative culture of teaching and learning informed by professional standards and focused on student and professional growth (2C) Supporting Teachers to Improve Practice (2D) Feedback on Instruction, directly relates to my action plan as I will engage in open collaborative conversations with teachers, administrators, and essential staff members. I will conduct informal classroom observations with the intension of providing feedback, constructing classroom materials, dispersing information. EXTERNAL CONTEXT AND POLICY Education leaders influence political, social, economic, legal and cultural contexts affecting education to improve education policies and practices (6A) Understanding and Communicating Policy correlates with my action plan. I will inform all essential members of the current legal mandates established by federal law, as safeguarding student
I see leadership as a daunting challenge in a school. There are so many factors to consider and how each decision affects so many different aspects of the school environment. I know I need practice in presenting my vision and mission to a staff and being an effective leader to get a community to follow my lead.
A few leadership experiences that I have had come from athletics. I started playing athletics when I was in the fifth grade and I still continue to play as a senior. Over the years I have had the ability to be one of the leaders of both the softball and basketball teams for my school. Being a leader has taught me to use leadership skills that I will need later in the future.
Leadership is considered to be a process with influence over their followers in which the leader expects the voluntary involvement of the team members in an effort to accomplish organizational objectives and goals. Effective leadership is described to be the extent to which a leader consistently and progressively managing , leading and directing his/her team members to the destination that has been agreed upon and defined by the whole group. Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
To be a leader you need to be able to inspire others, get people motivated, and set an example to other people. A leader needs to do all of these because if one of these aspects fails people don’t look at the leader...
Thomas Sergiovanni (2015) describes three essential dimensions of leadership as “the heart, head, and hand of leadership.” The heart describes those characteristics within the school leader that reflect personal “beliefs, values, and dreams.” The head of leadership refers to the practice of teaching and educating. The hand of leadership reflects actions taken by school leaders with respect to management behaviors. (p. 5) Within these elements, there is room for personal choice in how leadership is practiced and it is incumbent on new principals to find an individual leadership style that responds to the uniqueness of each school.
In developing my own educational leadership model (MELM) I began with establishing what I believe the goal of education should be, since leaders by definition are leading people towards something. The goal of education is to effectively teach students the essential skills and knowledge they will need to establish a productive, positive, self-sufficient life where they can be active members of their communities. An effective leader, while working towards this goal will need to consider the present conditions and demands of the environment they are a part of. In the field of education, both internal and external factors are of crucial importance when developing a plan to lead for success. However, one must note the variables in education are different than those the business sector face, for example; student performance, ability and cultural differences; availability/condition of supplies and materials; goal; educator’s capability, views and attitudes; conditionality of economic support; openness/hostility of influencing communities; state or government performance mandates. A leader who knows where they (students, school, district, community) are now, can approach goals more clearly and develop more effective strategies to arrive at them.

My leadership experience involves National Honors Society, as well as interning at a veterinary clinic. I was in National Honors Society for 2 years, and advised newer members of the National Honors Society chapter to succeed in reaching the requirement to remain in National Honors Society. When members struggled finding time to meet the 10-hour requirement of community service hours, I assisted them in finding the time for community services to achieve the minimum 10 hours to remain in National Honors Society while considering both their high school and college classes.
