My Flipped Classroom Essay

This is the first class I have taken that has used the flipped classroom approach, so it was very new to me. Doing the homework on the chapters before doing the material in class was a big thing to get used to, but I felt it helped force me to understand. The effort and time put into teaching yourself material really makes you focus on it more. Though I could not understand everything on my own, which was always resolved in class a few days later. To me the group work helped the most with the flipped classroom concept. I liked this because not only could you freely ask your group questions to help you understand, they would ask you questions as well. Explaining something to someone else really helps you understand it more yourself, and it helps in remembering it later. The modified flipped classroom with some lecturing is better in my opinion. There were a few times that no one in my group could figure out a problem, or there would be an answer we weren’t sure of. Having some lecture helped with the understanding and going over the problems was a good way to double check that we all knew what we were doing and had gotten the correct answers. Whether it was the first half of each class or the first class of the week. This way maybe everyone would understand the material more before doing group work, because there were a few times no one in my group would understand a certain problem or concept so we could only sit and wait for an explanation. I felt like this wasted time. Also there usually wasn’t even enough lecture time to really take notes in this class, which is one of the main way I learn and retain information; listening and writing it as the professor explains.
