With advanced technology constantly being developed, society had to adapt in order for people to keep up with the changes. An example of this would be the classroom lecture. Normally, the classroom lecture would be traditional, which would have a professor presenting the material in a classroom. However, with so many technology being used every day, a flipped classroom was being implemented in some schools. A flipped classroom involves students watching lectures at home before meeting face to face, so that exercises and discussions can be done during class. Due to each lecture types being different, the topic being discussed will be about the pros and cons of the traditional and flipped classrooms. To begin, the pros about the traditional classroom will be discussed first. In a traditional classroom, students benefit from this learning method because the material being taught is more focused on the important topics. The reason for that is because professors want to provide the students with essential material that will help them in the future. Another benefit is that the traditional method teaches students responsibility. Deciding whether to go to class …show more content…
The student’s responsibility to go to class can be a con, especially if students don’t give an effort to go to class. This results in the student’s chance of failing the course. The discussions can backfire due to some students avoiding interacting with either the professor or other students, because of their passiveness. Also, if there are no discussions and the professor just lectures throughout the entire lecture, many students will lose interest and wander off, or even worse, not attending class overall. Having laptops or other electronic devices can be a con due to the fact that students are tempted to play games or surf the web. This affects other students as well because they tend to glance at what’s on the screen and become
In the article Should Colleges Really Eliminate the College Lecture? by Christine Gross-Loh, Loh discusses the relevance of traditional college lectures and how it could become obsolete in the near future. She explains how a “flipped classroom” could be more beneficial in terms of academics and show improvements in students learning abilities.
Though there are some positive effects, the adverse impact of technology on education has been extraordinary. The technology community has worked hard to bring useful technology into our classrooms, all with good intentions to broaden our knowledge. With these good intentions also came about unwanted side effects such as distraction and disruption in the classroom. I can clearly remember many of my teachers yelling at us to put our cell phones, iPods, and iTouch phones away especially during lecture and exams. The yelling was not without just cause, students cheated with their devices along with updating their Facebook pages during class too.
Everyone has a different way of teaching, but in the end, the method should help the students learn. In the
Students are not entitled to solutions to every problem that may come about as a result of their choosing to use technology; if a student chooses to use technology than it is their responsibility to solve those problems for themselves. For example, just because a teacher allows computers in class, it does not mean that the teacher must also supply a way for the students to charge their computers if the situation may arise that one needs to charge her computer; this is the student’s responsibility and she must solve the problem on her own. Computers do offer easily accessible distractions during class if they are used for note taking, however if a student chooses to be distracted by their computer and use it for the purpose of entertainment instead of notes taking then it will show when it comes test time and they don’t have the notes to study. Students that are easily distracted by what is happening in front of them and would be distracted if another student were to use a computer in class can simply choose not to sit behind a student that uses technology to take
Many people argue that by using laptops during lectures, students are able to actively participate in the class and they have better communication with the professors despite large class sizes (Fried, 2008, p.2). Through classroom resources such as university and course online platforms, students are able to access the information they are learning about in their lectures. However, students themselves also have a very particular view on this topic, as they are very protective over their belongings and do not want to have their laptops banned from the classroom: “more and more faculty are banning laptops from their classrooms because of perceptions that they distract students and detract from learning,” (Fried, 2008, p.1). Prohibiting the use of laptops in university classrooms is becoming a more common solution to multitasking and student distraction. Universities enforce this regulation in order to prevent distraction and multitasking from impacting a students and surrounding student’s academic
According to the Flipped Network, “Flipped Learning is a pedagogical approach in which instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter”(FLN, 2014). The Flipped Classroom is also known as inverting the classroom, which means that the events that usually take place in this defined by classroom will now take place outside the classroom and vise versa. Teachers can have students use the plethora of technologies to assist the students by having access to lectures, video presentations, and other materials
Presents the results of a study on the effectiveness of computer-based integrated learning system (ILS) in schools in the United States. Subjects in which ILS is used; ILS' ability to track students' progress on learning activities; ILS' effectiveness in improving student learning; Underutilization of ILS in American schools; Potential of ILS to transform the classroom.
I believe trauma reaction is the most difficult to deal with. Dr. Laaser (2017) talked about the eight trauma reactions which includes trauma bonds, trauma repetition, trauma shame, trauma abstinence, trauma splitting, trauma pleasure, trauma blocking, and trauma reactions (Liberty University, 2017). Trauma reaction is when the client has nightmare, flashbacks and respond to the thoughts by acting out. Because of those flashbacks, pain and memories of trauma, the person cope with the pain by addiction to a substance. Substances such as alcohol and drugs usage by turn into addiction.
The development of technology in this country has been significant to the daily lives of Americans today. In the twenty-first century, one of the greatest accomplishments of technology is the use of laptops. People, such as students, are facing the fact that laptops have made their lives easier. Some colleges and universities have allowed that each student bring their personal laptops with internet connectivity to class while others believe they easily weaken the learning abilities of students instead of promoting and increasing learning in the classroom. Although personal laptops in the classroom have numerous advantages, there have also been frequent complaints from professors because laptops hinder with learning, and as a result should be banned from bringing them into the classroom since laptops can easily distract students, not every student can afford purchasing a laptop, and would prevent students from cheating or plagiarizing.
Flipped learning involves leveraging e-learning technologies to provide students with content prior to the lesson so that in the group context more time can be spent in group activities (Johnson and Renner, 2012). This promotes a collaborative learning environment in the classroom (Jarvela, Volet and Jarvenoja, 2010, Stahl, 2012). The aim of flipped learning is to develop an active learning environment within the classroom without sacrificing the coverage of content (Strayer, 2007). The impact is to develop in the student active learning, social learning and creative learning skills (Miltbrandt, 2004).
INTRODUCTION Problem Definition 1. This research study is about effective strategies used in a flipped classroom. It is necessary for research on this topic because it is more common for a classroom teacher to have a constructivist approach in their classroom. It is important to determine strategies that are beneficial in implementing a flipped classroom because it is an instructional method teachers could use in the classroom. My questions in this study are what flipped classroom strategies improve academic performance?
We all know technology is changing everyday. As laptops are becoming more popular in today 's society, especially in a college classroom setting, professors have noticed more and more students with their faces engaged on the computer screen and not the lecture. There have been recent studies that show in classroom use of laptops can affect students and their learning. Should the use of laptops be banned in the classroom?
Current students or digital natives were born into a world of ubiquitous technology. As some literature suggests, these students need to be educated differently than past generations. Their preference for interactive and experimental learning approaches has made the flipped classroom an increasingly popular approach to reach students (Phillips & Trainor, 2014). In the flipped classroom, students are expected to spend their homework time outside of class, watching audio or video lectures that take the place of in-class lectures.
The education system is a system that will constantly be improving with time. One of the newer ways of learning is through a system called the Flipped Learning system. The system is described as any classroom setting with a pre-recorded video that is used outside of the classroom to help students learn. CMU writing courses should use the flipped classroom model for many reasons. Students learn in many different ways and for some it can be hard at at times very frustrating.
Through classroom observation I was exposed to the different methods of teaching a lesson. The methods of teaching depends on how will the teacher execute the lesson well. I learned that modern learners today needs both modern and traditional way of teaching as for them to fully learned the lesson in a meaningful way.
