The education system is a system that will constantly be improving with time. One of the newer ways of learning is through a system called the Flipped Learning system. The system is described as any classroom setting with a pre-recorded video that is used outside of the classroom to help students learn. CMU writing courses should use the flipped classroom model for many reasons. Students learn in many different ways and for some it can be hard at at times very frustrating. With the flipped classroom model, the students will be given the freedom to learn in their own desired setting. Those who find it difficult to learn in the school setting might have a short attention span and they might find it hard to stay tuned in on class lectures and …show more content…
This is a benefit for the students and the teachers. The teachers will spend less time going over questions that the students have because they will be able to rewatch and rewind and fastforward the videos so they can understand the material properly. Not only will this save time but it will also cut down on the distractions in the classroom. Question asking in the classroom may not sound like a distraction but more of learning tactic, but it can be a distraction to students who already know what they are doing and it can cause more confusion and chaos if too many questions are being asked at once. If the students are allowed to watch the video until they understand the lecture then their will be less confusion and less question asking. This will also save time because the teachers won’t be repeating themselves all the time because when the students go into the classroom they will already have a pretty good understanding of the …show more content…
In the video from Sal khan, he talks about his program and company called Khan Academy. Khan Academy is a program that Mr. Khan made to put his videos on. The program also generates exercises that quizzes the users on the material they just learned. The program isn't only student friendly, but it is also teacher and professor friendly. The teachers can sign in and look at the amount of work that the students have completed and they can even see the scores they got on their quizzes. Khan also states that his program “arms the teachers with as much data as it can”. The teachers can go in and not only see the scores but they can see all of exercises that the student is proficient in, stuck on, or what they are working on. This will allow the teacher to get that student who is struggling more than others as much help as possible. For CMU classes, this can help the professors keep track of their students work easier and it can help the professor see what they need to go over more in future classes. This will also give the professors the ability to help the students who ask for help. If the student asks for help, the professor will be able to go through and see what it is that the student is struggling on and it could help them come up with a way to help them through their
It is how you make many educational decisions regarding the classroom. My CT stated that she knew how most of the students would do but there were a few that surprised her. Having this digital way of assessment is also convenient for parent reference. The students individual scores are easy to print and also the classroom scores are given to the principal for review. It is a smooth, efficient and manageable way to assess the students equally. Assessments like this could also be helpful in creating a seating arrangement or partner system. I think it is beneficial to pair lower and higher skilled students together. You could use the higher skilled students to help teach other students. Students teaching students can be a valuable resource to struggling
In the article Should Colleges Really Eliminate the College Lecture? by Christine Gross-Loh, Loh discusses the relevance of traditional college lectures and how it could become obsolete in the near future. She explains how a “flipped classroom” could be more beneficial in terms of academics and show improvements in students learning abilities.
works in a way that results in continuous improvement of student learning. Within this system instructional software, assessment tools… may be used to provide or determine instruction/interventions and supports for studentsEfficaciously teach all students
During lessons, videos give students the sense that he/ she is watching TV and most of the times videos provide great animation information on topics that strikes students
“The Broken Escalator” video teaches us if we get stuck on something to not just sit there, that we can move on to something else and not just wait until it comes to you. It also teaches us that if we fall behind, we can take a few steps everyday to get back up with the rest of the class again, and be on the same level. “The Marshmallow Test” video teaches us that if we are patient and listen to the instructions that were given to us, we will be rewarded and succeed, and move further along/ahead
Today’s classrooms are designed after a few key theories. One of which is behaviorism. Behaviorism is the idea that we can control others through intervention as a higher order of animals. One of the guiding principles of behaviorism is scheduling, which helps initiate behaviorism strategies of learning. One of those strategies is contracting in which a teacher and a student negotiate to create a desirable outcome. Another is a token economy which uses contracting and scheduling to produce systematic results. In addition, prompting is the idea that a student will know what to do if a certain activity occurs. Modeling is simply the idea that your behavior will determine that of your students. Finally, Rote learning is the concept of use it
The videos we watched during class were shown at the end of the semester to so, as students we could be able to pull examples of what delayed gratification and GRIT is. Also, the videos could help us become better students; for example, with GRIT I learned that no matter how hard the semester can be I should stick to the class, do everything that I am supposed to on my part in the end hopefully what I have done will pay off.
According to the Flipped Network, “Flipped Learning is a pedagogical approach in which instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter”(FLN, 2014). The Flipped Classroom is also known as inverting the classroom, which means that the events that usually take place in this defined by classroom will now take place outside the classroom and vise versa. Teachers can have students use the plethora of technologies to assist the students by having access to lectures, video presentations, and other materials
For instance, watching a movie can enlarge someone as a visual learner, and can cover many other topics being taught, other than just one topic. In the article, Pros and Cons of Using Movies in Class, the article provides, “Sometimes a movie can include moments that go beyond what you are teaching in a lesson and allow you to highlight other important topics” (Kelly 2). Also, students can understand what they are learning and have less difficulties by the movie being a source as visual learning. To conclude, movies are also a great choice for students viewing as a class because it expands different learning styles, and can cover more than one topic that is being
Flipped learning involves leveraging e-learning technologies to provide students with content prior to the lesson so that in the group context more time can be spent in group activities (Johnson and Renner, 2012). This promotes a collaborative learning environment in the classroom (Jarvela, Volet and Jarvenoja, 2010, Stahl, 2012). The aim of flipped learning is to develop an active learning environment within the classroom without sacrificing the coverage of content (Strayer, 2007). The impact is to develop in the student active learning, social learning and creative learning skills (Miltbrandt, 2004).
Using videos in the classroom provides multiple avenues for learning. Not only do students learn by seeing, but this also helped students develop auditory skills to be able to listen. Because visual learners learn by seeing, I can use maps to help students better understand concepts in social studies or history. Seeing where the pioneers traveled as well as talking about the climate and harsh conditions will allow the students to make sense of how the people had to survive. Another way I can utilize my talents are making posters with eye-catching cartoon characters. This will provide an opportunity for me to be creative and draw, but also make the subjects more appealing for when the posters are hung in the classroom. Graphs will prove to be helpful in math because I can do an experience, but also mark the results using a chart to provide a visual. This will also provide lessons in visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning. Graphic organizers will be used a lot to compare and contrast two stories. This will make it easier to see the differences and similarities. Using my graphic organizer as an example, students have an example of what their work should
There have been many useful topics that were covered in Learning design and technology. As a major in Data Science three topics that stood out the most were systems thinking, digital divide, and E-learning in the future. I enjoyed the entire concept of system theory since it allows individuals to analyze the overall picture in order to find the most optimal, innovative, and efficient methods. As a Data scientist, using systems thinking is absolutely crucial, since analyst must be able to work with large datasets and make interpretations. There are many characteristics of an effective system thinking approach, it should consist of a plan that analyzes the efficiency measurements of inputs and outputs of the overall process. The system approach
Foods become part of a process of marking boundaries and differences between ethnic cultures, religions, gender and individuals. While some foods are desired and edible in some ethnic cultures, others may find the same food repulsive and inedible. This shows that food not only serves to provide nutritional values and satisfy biological needs, but it also marks social differences. Foods as boundary markers is not only limited to edible and inedible foods, but what time of the day it is consumed, how it is prepared, and its association with other foods (Manderson, 1986: p. 6).
As teachers, we have to monitor the progress our students make each day, week, quarter and year. Classroom assessments are one of the most crucial educational tools for teachers. When assessments are properly developed and interpreted, they can help teachers better understand their students learning progress and needs, by providing the resources to collect evidence that indicates what information their students know and what skills they can perform. Assessments help teachers to not only identify and monitor learners’ strengths, weaknesses, learning and progress but also help them to better plan and conduct instruction. For these reasons, ongoing classroom assessment is the glue that binds teaching and learning together and allows educators to monitor their efficacy and student learning.
“According to results of a new national research study, 78% of more than 1,000 students surveyed still believe it is easier to learn in a classroom”. USA today, (2016) Students are able to physically see the work and are able to use tactile stimulation for their learning needs. Face to face students are able to find out the type of learner they are. In discovering their learning style students can use their knowledge to guide them in their educational experience and needs.
