Kidwatching shows many different things when it comes to collecting data on how a student or student’s learn over a period of time. When doing kidwatching observations, it is important to monitor everything that could have an influence on a student’s performance. Different things such as resources, environments, interactions, etc. are a few things that can affect a student when it comes to learning. Being able to kidwatch at Killian Elementary, I’ve been able to collect a great deal of data when it comes to seeing a student as a scientist. Giving this opportunity, I can say when it comes to being a scientist my small teacher focuses more on the bigger picture than the actual findings of assignments. For example, during the Owl Pellet observation he focused more on the overall owl pellet like how it looked, smelled, etc. but instead of wanting to analyze what was inside of it. Realizing how much his focus normally is on the bigger pictures shows how much teachers should stress how important other things such as predictions, hypothesis, etc. are when it comes to analyzing science experiments. Normally allowing students the opportunity to make predictions before experiments helps them to understand the objective of the assignment. According to “Teaching Science to Every Child”, we use what we know to anticipate what’s going to happen, and we find out whether our prediction is correct (Settlage, 2012). Stressing how important it is to make a prediction to my small teacher would better his focus on looking for particular things during the experiment because it would also help him focus on whether or not his prediction is correct or incorrect. My first way would be explaining to them that Dan is a student who is autistic. By getting them to understand this particular thing would help understand how much affect this has when it comes to learning. Informing them about this condition will show them why things such as instructions, directions, etc. should be stressed numerous of times to Dan because he can be distracted fast. Another way I would communicate to an outsider to understand Dan is by informing them that he becomes motivated in learning when he is interested whether it’s the topic, resources, assignments, etc. The article “Meeting the Needs of English Language Learners” states that people do not learn if they are confused or bored (Freeman, 2000). Students become more engaged in lessons when he/she is interested. Using the previous example about my small teachers excitement to use the chromebook showed his level of motivation. Also during this lesson, he was very interested in watching the videos their teacher allowed them to watch. During lessons, videos give students the sense that he/she is watching TV and most of the times videos provide great animation information on topics that strikes students
During this assignment, I needed to observe infant/toddler from birth to 36 months. The observation was for 30 minutes while the infants interact with the world. While the observation, I created a running record observation to keep track of the developmental domains. The observation took place in the ECE classroom. There were three children which were Charlotte, Loui, and Benjamin. They were placed in the center of the class where there was different kinds of toys. During the observation, Charlotte and Loui were interacting with one another. However, Benjamin wasn’t interacting at all. Loui interacted with classmates and went outside the circle to get some toys.
Observation is very important in young children because that is how you get to know a child better. While observing how a child interacts with their peers, adults, and how they behave in different settings, you are getting to know the child without speaking to them.
Each daycare has their own menu for the children’s breakfast and lunch. Through my observations, I have noticed that the “Don’t Worry Childcare” has a variety of food options throughout the month. For example, the children could either choose from fruit loops cereal, or frosted flakes for breakfast. The snacks eaten varies every day as well. For instance, the children ate milk and cookies one day, and cheese crackers another day. An example of lunch would be, milk, chicken fingers, French fries, green beans, and mixed fruit one day, and spaghetti, corn, peaches, and bread and butter another day. I observed the children eat ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, and peaches one day for lunch. All those food options seemed very delicious. The observation took place at the Child-Development Center classroom D at Yuba College. When I arrived the children were outside playing in the grass and play-sets available. We made a few trips to the bathroom, and towards the end of my observation we moved into the classroom. It was a cool day so the kids did not mind being outside, so most of the observation occurred outside the
I observed a child at the elementary school I was working at for SERVE while he was playing during lunch. I first walked around the playground during recess to get a feel for the school and the students on their breaks. As I sat down on a bench near the playground I noticed there was a lot of segregation between genders throughout the activities. For example, I saw that the girls were more likely to be found playing “house”, hopscotch or playing with other girls whereas the boys gravitated towards the more physical activities such as sports like football, kickball and basketball. Although there were expectations for both groups around the playground jungle gym area with monkey bars, slides and more, that had an equal balance of boys and girls. I chose to focus on a boy, around seven or eight years old, who was socializing with others and engaging in various activities.
I observed Mrs. Linscott’s classroom with three year olds at the East Lansing Child Development Laboratory. Along with the children, there were a few adults to help in the class. I focused on seven main things while observing the children. First, I focused on one child for 15 minutes and took note of their motor, language, and social development. The second thing I observed was how the adults in the classroom interacted with the children. Third, I payed attention to the children’s emotional development. Next, I took notes on the children’s communication and language skills. I also observed the children’s behavior from a Piagetian perspective. Then, I observed how the children’s learning could be shaped by the interactions with the adults.
Children are brought the child care development center to provide daycare for the working parent. Upon arrival, an assessment is performed on the children. Their hair is checked for the presence of lice. Their eyes, ears, nose, and mouths are checked for redness or discharge. The presence of a cough should also be noted. General appearance is assessed for cleanliness. Their shoes should be closed toes to protect their feet from injury. The children can be dismissed from the center for lice or presence of infection to prevent the spread to others. If lice are present, the child should obtain treatment and return to school the day after treatment was received (Bohl, Evetts, McClain, Rosenauer, & Stellitano, 2015, p. 231). For my observation, I chose Kids World; located at 160 Kelly Road, Bowling Green KY 42101, contact number (270) 842-6915 with supervising teachers Kim Neal and Chelsie Cosby. Kids World is a Family Child Care Center that services children ranging in age from infant to school age children. Days of operation for Kids World are Monday through Friday, from 6:30AM to 5:30PM. Kids World is a licensed type 1-child care facility with a maximum capacity of 86 children, and is a participant of the Kentucky Child Care Assistance Program. A majority of the staff are certified or trained in CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) and have obtained a CDA (Child Development Associate) credential.
Observation is important as the practitioner can find out what the child is interested in and what motivates them to learn alongside their progress and how they behave in certain situations, additionally at the same time it identifies if children need assistance within certain areas of learning or socially (DCSF, 2008). Furthermore the observations check that the child is safe, contented, healthy and developing normally within the classroom or early years setting, over time the observations can be given to parents as they show a record of progress which helps to settle the parent and feel more comfortable about their child’s education. Observations are not only constructive within learning about an individual child, they can be used to see how different groups of children behave in the same situation and how adults communicate and deal with children’s behaviour (Meggitt and Walker, 2004). Overall observations should always look at the positives of what children can complete within education and not look at the negatives and all observations should become a fundamental part of all practitioners work alongside reflection (Smidt, 2009).
For this assignment I had to observe a child between the age range of 0-6 for an hour and half to note their motor and physical development. Before I go in to detail about my observations of the child I must first define what motor and physical development means. Motor development can be broken down into two subcategories. One subcategory would be the gross motor skills development that use large muscle groups to complete task. When we sit in a science class, most of the time we are bored as bored can get. We really do not get a chance to explore on our own to find out what’s really out there. Teachers sometimes are not able to get in depth outside the textbook because they are required to teach that all throughout the year. That is why a lot of kids do not really get into science because they are stuck in the book all the time. Some kids love science and do not really care about the work they have to do.
In Science, teachers serve as the facilitator of learning, guiding them through the inquiry process. Teachers must ask open-ended questions, allow time for the students to answer, avoid telling students what to do, avoid discouraging students’ ideas or behaviors, encourage to find solutions on their own, encourage collaboration, maintain high standards and order, develop inquiry-based assessments to monitor students’ progress, and know that inquiry may be challenging for some students so be prepared to provide more guidance. There are three types of Science inquiry: structured, guided, and open. Structured is the most teacher-centered form of inquiry. This type of inquiry is mainly seen in laboratory exercises where the teacher needs to provide structure, however the students are the ones who conduct the experiment and find conclusions. Guided inquiry is where the students are given tools to develop a process and find the results. As an example, the teacher would instruct the students to build a rocket, but not tell them how to design it.
