One day, you’re in class and you are watching a selected movie from your teacher. But, as you sit down to watch the movie, another teacher walks into the classroom explicitly saying, you are not allowed to be watching this movie, what do you do? Many people have different thoughts on why students should or should not watch the movies selected by teachers. In the short clip, Science vs Cinema: The Martian, Dr. Andy Howell furthermore explained the events taken place in, The Martian and wanted to know, is the science accurate? After viewing the movie and discussing the pros and cons on viewing movies in class, I strongly agree that eighth graders should be able to watch the movie, The Martian. As my claim states that eighth graders should be able to watch the movie The Martian, there are multiple supporting reasons on why I agree with my statement. The first reasons why eighth graders should view the movie is because it involved a vast amount of communication, problem solving and plan for survival. For instance, watching a movie can enlarge someone as a visual learner, and can cover many other topics being taught, other than just one topic. In the article, Pros and Cons of Using Movies in Class, the article provides, “Sometimes a movie can include moments that go beyond what you are teaching in a lesson and allow you to highlight other important topics” (Kelly 2). Also, students can understand what they are learning and have less difficulties by the movie being a source as visual learning.
