This movie is adapted from a book with the same title by Berkeley Breathed. Milo (motion by Seth Green, voice by Seth Dusky), a nine-year old boy, is struggling to free his mom (Joan Cussack) from the Martians. The Martians Supervisor (Mindy Sterling) who is regularly observing Earth has seen Milo’s mom successfully persuading Milo to do his chores. The Martians abduct Milo’s mom because they want her parenting skill to be extracted and implanted into the nannybots whose responsibility is to raise the Martians babies. That night Milo and her mom have a quarrel. Milo who actually does not like doing chores and following house rules tells his mom that without a mom his life would be better. Later, he realizes his mistake and decides to see his mom to apologize. However, he discovers his mom being abducted. Milo runs after her but they end up in different part of the spaceship.
Once they get on Mars, Milo is taken to an underground cell. He manages to escape. While he is chased by the Martians guard, Milo follows a voice which orders him to jump down a garbage chute. He lands on a trash-covered landscape inhabited by furry creatures. They lead Milo to see Gribble (Dan Fogler). Gribble blames himself and regrets for not being able to save his mom. Milo tries to convince Gribble that they still have the chance to save Milo’s mom just as Ki finds them. The three discover a cave painting showing a Martian family which is just like human family on Earth. It makes Ki realizes that Martians children were not always raised by nannybots. At present, female Martians babies are raised by nannybots in the technologically advanced all female society while the male babies are sent down to be raised by adult male Martians, the furry creatures Milo encountered
