At the beginning of this course, I felt both excited, yet apprehensive about what was to come. Various discussions, and presentations seemed to intimidate me. However, despite my hesitation I understood that this course would help develop me into an effective leader and that is exactly what happened. Not only have I improved my skills, I also learned about defining leadership, and understood the importance of contributing out and inside of the classroom
A large strength of mine is self-assessment and as we learned the seven key leadership learning areas in class I constantly was aware of what I was a weakness or strength and what was improved during this course. Regarding my second journal entry, I named project design as the skill I feel

I was already familiar with my peers, yet this aspect of the course helped influence me deeply as everyone brought different things to the table. It was seeing how other members take a leadership position outside the classroom, whether that be during a feeder school visit, planned event, or volunteer project, that helped guide me along the right path. For example, it was Aaron Triguero's "second personality" he took on at Forest Glade that encouraged me to be more enthusiastic in leadership roles. Another individual that inspired me was George Karatzias. At the visit to Hetherington my group's assigned topic was on sports. During his portion of speaking time George mentioned baseball and how he had to take on a leadership role with Ardi Kelmendi and lead the team. Though I would expect this from Ardi: an involved student in various sports and student parliament; George's statement took me by surprise, as George is often quiet in class. Nonetheless I felt proud of what they were doing and realized that anyone can take on a leadership role outside the classroom, even me. Thus, the hesitance I felt towards taking a stand in situations slowly diminished and I felt that I didn't need to be outside of just "behind the scenes". Finally, the weekly "Friday discussions" supported my leadership development as I was able to make the most and learn through others' ideas and perspectives on important issues. I felt challenged when I needed to pick a side when strong arguments were made for both, especially when Jasmine tested the class with her hypothetical train situation. The trusting environment combined with a diversity of opinions, and popcorn, made for an eventful and relaxing Friday, however this part of the curriculum gave me the confidence to take part of more discussions in the future and beyond the classroom
Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. Rather, this is someone that has a true connection with their peers, and has unmatched passion for what they do. It is one thing to have the knowledge of “the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive”. What I am persistent to do with that knowledge is what is important. My biggest take away is that I need to get on the balcony. By being on the balcony I can see that is it really the bold guy with the dance moves who starts the party, not the DJ. Silly to me that I never realized that is where I needed to be, that is where people could find me in a real life party. A year from now I hope that is still where I will be, looking for new data and learning more about myself in new circumstances. There will always be more to learn, although every once in a while I will have to intervene in situations that will make me uncomfortable. To carry on improving on the skills I picked up during the course of this class, it will be crucial for me to reevaluate the goals I set for myself. I plan to reset them all and provide myself with a timeline to achieve the goals. KU offers a minor in leadership studies and this classes is the foundation for all of those leadership classes to come. This class will be impossible to forget as I move forward in complete my minor. I believe to be a successful leader it is important to not just focus on one particular style, but to incorporate many. If you take a few high points from each style and learn to mesh them together you should have a better understanding of leadership as a whole. This class has taught me that being a leader is a lot more challenging than people may think. Leaders have to wear many different hats in many different situations. To become an effective leader you have to work at it. It may come easy to some, but to others it is a skill that is shaped and molded over time. Different experiences and situations help mold leaders into who they become. I hope to use the different styles we have learned about to mold me into an effective leader in today’s society.

The very first thing I found during my time with this course is that I often struggle with self-awareness. I must actively seek feedback from my subordinates, peers, and leaders. This will ensure that I am not languishing under a false sense of how I am perceived. It will give me a better picture of who I am as a person and a leader. The learning obtained from the Leadership and Organizational Behavior course has been valuable. From this course, I have learned that while someone can be a manager or a leader, it is better to be both. The various topics discussed throughout the eight week course have provided the unique insight necessary to be an effective leader. The insight gained allow for the identification of the behaviors that an effective leader must possess and continually develop. By identifying these behaviors, I am better able to shape my leadership style and goals so that I can achieve my full career potential as a leader within my organization. Ultimately, I realize that it is important to both do things right and do the right things in all my actions within an organization.
After the self-assessments from the book, now I know what kind of leader I can be, what are the weakness I need to work on and how I can influence my team and the people outside my work environment. This course has taught me many different type of leadership style and one cannot be an effective leader but just following one specific style. To be an effective leader you need to assess the situation and act according to the situations.
Leaders require essential leadership skills to effectively lead. The Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Academy teaches those essential skills to enhance leadership ability out in the fleet. During my time at the CPO Academy, I acquired vital knowledge and skills in leadership throughout the classes I took which I will be taking back to the unit. One class that had a significant impact was the Facilitative Leadership class which gave me the tools to effectively run a meeting. In addition, the Change Management class provided me with the skills necessary to support Command Policy and get crew buy-in. Lastly, the Stress Management class imparted me with knowledge on how to deal with stress and mitigate it.
