Becoming a successful leader throughout this journey has provided a progress of keeping an open mind in wanting to help the community, and organization to thrive in this changing world and identifying different strengths and blind spots at the same time. I have experienced many several touch points that have influenced my perspective on leadership and have more courage to become an overall person in adaptive leadership. With specific leadership skills, many groups will all have something in common, with that in mind leadership requires specific concepts to have a purpose and work skillfully together. With having ancestors and aunts, a sister, and a mother and a father to look up too has become a very blessed adaptation and learning experience till this day on. With tying that in with the semester of this course and learning adaptive leadership has become a various set of thriving and tackling challenges to get things done to where I need to be in the future. I have experienced my role as a leader as a person who puts things into action for a vision for my future and motivates me to work hard. “Adaptive leadership is specifically about change that enables the capacity to thrive and engage in new strategies and abilities to achieve set dreams.” (Heifetz, Grashow, Linsky, pg. 14). By maintaining better communication skills and develop better listening skills. By challenging myself and improving my skills that I need to work on, will help me become an overall compassionate leader to enhance my development skills and growth cycle to leading me in my career. Taking the time to evaluate myself throughout the course has provided me with a deeper understanding of adaptive leadership that I didn’t know of before the course. There were skills that I needed to improve on with my distraction skills and getting to focus more into my schoolwork, to improve to become more of an effective leader. This ‘reality on the ground’ approach to leadership can give you as an Army leader both a strategic and a tactical ( ).” Winston Churchill was an adaptive leader in London during World War II. Prime Minister Churchill was a key part in the Allies victory over the Axis power due to his ability to rally not only his countryman but also rally the leader of another nation such as the United States or Russia into fighting Hitler. The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Through academics and experience, I’ve concluded that leadership is a “soft” skill, more art than science, and that leadership principles can be universally applied. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner (2007) is the result of twenty years of research on the factors that influence and create great leadership. Through studies and stories from leaders with various backgrounds throughout the world, the practices and characteristics that create great leadership are delineated. Leadership is viewed not as a group of inherent characteristics, but as learned behavior that anyone can achieve. The goal of Kouzes and Posner’s book is to inspire and educate leaders through transformational leadership. As such, leadership is about mobilizing others to become and do extraordinary things.
(p. 9). The ability to recognize, manage, and direct one’s own process of learning and change is a major component of sustaining resonant leadership (p. 9) and thus, is critical to renewal.
Adaptation can be both passive and active. Adaptive leadership is primarily an active process of adaptation, during which the leader does not take just a passive effort to adapt to circumstances in which he found himself. The leader should be able to change those circumstances in order to carry out tasks. Some of the basic characteristics of adaptive leaders are: to think constantly and take strategic steps in his community for his good positioning; vision and know how to deploy forces and resources that would be most appropriate for the execution of tasks; to accept the opinion of other members of the organization; to admit his mistakes and leave the non-productive course of action; to be creative and always able to find different ways to arrive at the desired goal; to know he can influence the creation and transformation of the structure of the organization; to be ready to experiment and learn from the experience of others; to be able to make changes in the and risks; to be always ready to improve themselves, to encourage innovations that come from their organization. Leadership constantly presents challenges to the leader’s abilities. Changes occur in the organization environment, disrupting the equilibrium. The approach a leader uses to handle and manage challenges effectively, greatly determine the success of the organization (Hall and Hord, 2006). In the modern-day organizations, challenges come in the form of people and obstacles that prevent the organization from reaching its goals. Moreover, there are a lot of complexity and unpredictability. New set of skills is required for the organization to stay competitive and achieve the set goals. Hence, the life of a modern-day leader is more demanding than ever (Kouzes and Posner, 2006).
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
Statement of Purpose Revision I am prepared to undertake doctoral study at Peabody College. My academic training and professional accomplishments demonstrate this. My academic training provided me with the critical and analytical thinking skills necessary to be a successful police officer. As a patrol officer, I responded to calls for service ranging from simple assaults to homicides. Upon arriving at the call for service, my purpose was to observe the scene, speak with victims and witnesses, and obtain all relevant information.

Growing up I have always taken on leadership roles. I was always the organizers of group projects and was team captain of my club and high school soccer team for several years. This past experience with leadership roles has lead to me developing several of valuable traits associated with leadership. For example, I have strong communication and problem solving skills, which have helped me in my past leadership positions and will continue to be an asset in the future. Although I have had experience in leadership roles in the past, I learned through this reading that there is room for a considerable amount of growth. One thing that was a valuable lesson for me was that leaders must be followed as well as follow others at times. I have always took control of situations and tried to lead others, but now I realize that sometimes even leaders need to take a back seat and let their followers take some control. I will employ this in the future in the clinical setting to ensure that all of my subordinates or colleagues feel they have control and power over the decisions being made. This is definitely an area I intend to grow in and utilize in the future to enhance my leadership abilities.
