Statement of Purpose Revision
I am prepared to undertake doctoral study at Peabody College. My academic training and professional accomplishments demonstrate this. My academic training provided me with the critical and analytical thinking skills necessary to be a successful police officer. As a patrol officer, I responded to calls for service ranging from simple assaults to homicides. Upon arriving at the call for service, my purpose was to observe the scene, speak with victims and witnesses, and obtain all relevant information. At the conclusion of my investigation, I had to evaluate the information I obtained to determine how best to interpret it.
My training at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) prepared me to do the task of a patrol officer well. The History program at UCLA gave me the critical thinking and analytical skills

SLI is the flagship program for California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). SLI is a nine-month program designed to enhance a supervisor's moral, ethical, and adaptive leadership. Adaptive leadership focuses on problems that police organizations have not solved using the department's current knowledge, skills, and abilities. My final project focused on how to change the culture of my agency from one that saw training as a state requirement to one that embraced learning and training as a priority. At the conclusion of the course, the course facilitator Dan Vega asked if he could use my final project as an example for his next class.
In 2017, the department promoted me to lieutenant after I completed a written essay, a graded tactical practicum, and two oral panels. As part of the management team, lieutenants are responsible for leadership, organizational development, resource allocation, budgets, statistical analysis, organizational structure, and problem-solving. The influence of higher education on police officer habits would surprise many according to Matthew D. Bostrom, D.P.A of the Saint Paul Police Department in “Police Chief Magazine-The Professional Voice of Law Enforcement”. Although a degree is required for some agencies and considered ideal for any person looking to join the law enforcement field, surveys show otherwise says Bostrom. According to a study conducted in St. Paul, Minnesota there were more on-duty vehicle collisions by officers with formal education beyond high school than those who only obtained a high school diploma. The article also shows figures indicating more disciplinary actions towards officers with college degrees and a significant difference in those of officers with high school diplomas only. The measurements of work habits shown indicate that perhaps a college degree in general is not necessary to be an effective police officer. Traffic Officer James Dunn of the California Highway Patrol in an interview said, “a degree can be beneficial, but some people are very eloquent and knowledgeable even without attending college-a person can learn the specific duties of any job, but college does not teach you the responsibilities of being a police officer. You learn that by hands-on training”. Although a degree is helpful, Officer Dunn admits that he has been very successful in the law
Perceptions of what constitutes a qualified police officer have been crafted as a result of numerous television shows and movies. They are often portrayed as heroic, invincible, and possessors of brute strength. While some of these physical attributes are in fact expected and required of police officers, they are not the only ones and at times, may come secondary to alternative methods, such as the use of strong communication and critical thinking skills. Policing has changed immensely since the days of resolving issues with a night stick. There is a desire for today’s police officers to possess the educational capacity to develop and implement community policing initiatives. Additionally, there exists a desire to professionalize policing. This drive for professionalism has led to the desire for increased educational requirements (Brecci, 1994).
The article Police and Higher Education: Where are We Now by Roy Roberg and Scott Bonn discuss and review past articles and ideas about whether or not police officers should be required to have earned a college degree in order to qualify a position in law enforcement within the United States. The first person who believed in the idea that police officers should be required to hold a college degree in order to be qualified for a position was August Vollmer. August Vollmer was “the father of American police professionalism” (Walker & Katz, 2011). Vollmer is best known for being a supporter of higher education within law enforcement. However, many officers and high ranking officials did not believe in the concept of needing to obtain a college degree in order to protect their community. A majority of police officers in law enforcement did not have a college degree nor did police departments require it to be considered a position. Moreover, many police departments did not necessitate a high school diploma but rather a general equivalency diploma. The first time that this idea was utilized was during the time of the 1960’s, when, in the early 1960’s, crime was increasing drastically and by the late 1960’s the ghetto riots took place, opening the eyes of those in charge that something needed to change, and change quickly in order to prevent criminal activity and chaos.
Yi- Feng Yang (2016) and Ganos and Galla (2013) state that to lead others you should know yourself very well and what leadership skill you attain. Change of leadership helps to bring up leadership trust and change commitment. Leadership models and styles are defined as trust, admiration, loyalty, respect and integrity. Originality and value in a leader show different opportunities of styles such as engaging, goal-oriented and involvement. To be precise, these leadership styles demonstrate good characteristics of a leader displaying good leadership skills. In order to explain the adaptive leadership in the case of Mihailovic I will briefly review the essence of adaptation and adaptive leadership.
Leadership is the glue that binds any business together, identifying and understanding your type of leadership style can ultimately aid you in becoming a better leader in your professional career. A successful business cannot function without leadership therefore this is a crucial aspect of internal employee development for businesses striving to stay relevant in a crowded marketplace. In addition to recognizing your leadership style every leader needs to look to them and identify what type of personality they have. By becoming an informed business leader you will gain trust and respect of your team to guide them into the future and maximizing potential growth. Throughout this paper I will identify my leadership style and also personality type and how it has affected my personal career growth. Identifying these conclusions is extremely important in crafting company culture.
Transformational Leadership and Adaptive Leadership theory will be discussed in relation to IT governance. De Haes, Van Grembergen and Debreceny (2013) formulate the main ideas of IT governance have only been around 20 years, but, the amount of literature is copious and is still providing a prolific amounts of current documentation. Both Transformational Leadership and Adaptive Leadership represent appropriate and critical leadership styles for organizations that strive to keep the pace of continuous technological advancements and that are focused on the rapid adoption of new business concepts and process improvements (Xenikou & Simosi, 2006). The specific benefits and problems associated with each leadership style have organizational opportunities and difficulties. The timing of each leadership style when applied requires timing and cooperation. Yet they both have similar operational goals, to improve the processes of IT governance using the innate strengths of each leadership style for the betterment of the organization. Knowing the strengths of each leadership style facilitate implementation, mastering the pitfalls of each leadership style improves metacognitive understanding of the risks and weaknesses involved in the process.
Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
When reflecting on my leadership styles, strengths and weaknesses I am rushed with thoughts, memories, regrets and actions of personal ways that I have handled past situations in the work place and ways that I plan to handle new situations at my new work place. I have had many successes with the way I handle my leadership role but there are also things that I wish that I could go back in time and change. The way some situations are handled, I think to myself, well this could have been done differently or I could have done this instead of what I did to enhance the outcome of the situation. There is always room for improvement in whatever job or task someone takes on and this is just one of those things. During the development of my PLAP, I have had the chance to weigh out my strengths and weaknesses of my leadership and it has been very effective to seeing where improving needs to be met. The plan has also let me evaluate the direction I hope to head in to achieve my leadership goals.
Leaders will no matter what have an influence on our world. They have missions, dreams and ambition, and with these things they are bound to go far. For leaders, what makes these dreams come true is having strong qualities such as leadership practices, values and strengths. If developed and learned how to use correctly, these are what take leaders to the next level and accomplish great things. In the following paper I will talk about leadership in our ever-changing world, explore my leadership practices, values and strengths as well as elaborate on the goals I have made to challenge myself as a leader.
The personal leadership development plan is to capture the self-awareness of an individual. People in general have a difficult time trying to figure out who they are and how they view themselves plus how others may see them. This plan will touch on my personal strengths, areas of improvement, and also identify me as a person more in-depth.
