The process of becoming a zoologist requires great self-determination, persistence, patience, and discipline; the role of zoologists has taken on increased levels of importance recently because of the need to teach respect for the environment and also the animals of the world.
It is important to have zoologists around, not only for animals but for humans also. Humans need to have the knowledge about animals to comprehend what goes on in the environmental issues that happens around them everyday.
As one develops knowledge of this career it is essential to have an understanding for what it is regarding. Zoology is a branch of biology that concerns the study of animal life (Zoology). Animals, in this frame of reference, are any living organisms that are not fungi, plants, viruses or bacteria. Animals include creatures like marine sponges, jellyfish, frogs, worms, rock lobsters, snails, insects, birds, fishes and mammals (Types of Zoologists Z). Zoology has evolved into a different study as it now consists of psychology and ecology; where as it use to only concentrate on the structures and function of the cell (Zoology). Zoology applying ideas and techniques to life processes has not only grouped together different fields, but also created connections to other science fields; it allows animal’s relationships with each other and its environment to be explained more easily (Hanson). Zoology embodies organizations that carry groups of individuals that are educated in an equivalent field. The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) is the most substantial membership group for zoology majors. The AZA has over 6,000 members worldwide at professional levels. Also, The Zoological Association of America welcomes all levels of zoology m...

You’re on vacation with eight of your closest teenage girl friends and are staying in a cabin house at the mountains. It’ the middle of the night, you’re sleeping soundly in your bunk, suddenly you hear noise outside of your window. You begin to panic, yet you don’t want to wake anybody up, convincing yourself it’s nothing you fall back asleep. Plenty of minutes later you hear a louder noise and decide to look outside your window, little did you know a six-foot black bear would be staring you down. After waking everyone up, you decide to call Animal Protection Hotline and explain to them that a black bear appears to be outside your cabin. They send a specialist to remove the bear, so out of curiosity you ask where the bear is going to be taken. They say that it will be held at the local zoo where he will be residing now and a zoologist will care for it. While many people think that zoology only deals with zoo animals, conservation and animal relocation are important parts of the field of zoology. Zoology is the intense research of animals, dead or alive, and the caring for their well-being as well as ensuring species management and survival.
When the average person thinks about zoology, they usually think about a zoo and or animals. As said in General Zoology, many questions come with this topic. “What is life? In what ways are the various kinds of animals alike or unlike in structure, internal processes, and modes of life? How do animals carry on their activities? How are the many kinds related to one another? In what ways does man resemble and differ from other living things? The answers to many of these questions are provided by the science of zoology.” (General Zoology, page 3). While zoology does involve animals, the general study of zoology is far more complicated then one would imagine. Zoology is a branch of biology that studies the classification, origins, habitats and behaviors of organisms. Someone who studies zoology is a zoologist, and has the tasks of learning about new species and their habitats. It is a job that if mastered, can be one of the most fulfilling and knowledgeable careers someone can obtain.
Pursuing down the path of obtaining this career goal, I majored in marine biology and minored in environmental studies at the University of San Diego. My undergrad studies, as well as being able to perform scientific research within the surrounding area, allowed me to gain an immense amount of knowledge about the environment that these organisms inhabit and how vital it is that we continue to preserve and protect it.
Every year, the zoo offers a number of classes to volunteers and students that are based solely on the handling of their animals, how people can help in the world, and can put people face-to-face with the animals to form a bond. The zoo has 126 animals that are used to aide in educational demonstrations, and this is in addition to the animals they show in the exhibits. Annually the zoo educates approximately 215,000 people with nearly 80.5 thousand hours of volunteer service provided. Their education system is important to the health of all their animals because it displays the time and effort dedicated to the care of the animals they have there. They also conduct daily exercises and training with the animals to make sure they are receiving enough exercise. A large chunk of all funding that the zoo receives go directly to the buying of food for the animals. They all eat different types of food sources to maintain healthy diets that relate to what they would consume in their original habitat. The zoo pushes the community, and it’s researchers/vets/trainers to all become invested and well-educated in the study of animal
Zoologists and wildlife biologists study wildlife and animals and how they survive in their habitats (“Zoologists” para.1). Zoologist and wildlife biologists study numerous things thing such as: diseases, genetics, origin, how it behaves, and their process of life (“Zoologist/Wildlife” para.1). They also study the interactions with other animals, breeding, movement patterns, population dynamics, and the person...
However, zoos and aquariums reflect responsibility to help and promote animal conservation and protection. Without them, many may have never gotten the chance to see exotic animals such as tigers, elephants, or giraffes up close to examine and learn about their nature. Without zoos, almost all of the best observational, behavioral, biological, or genetically based research on several diverse species would have not been possible. And, without zoos and the help of fundamental captive breeding and reintroduction programs with...

My love for the outdoors has led me to the career choice of Ornithology. I would like nothing more then to be able to study the lives of birds and their behaviors. Ever since I was a young boy I have always been fascinated with birds. I have cherished being a part of nature since I was young. Whether it’s fishing, hiking or camping, I have always enjoyed the experience of being outdoors. It is this love that instilled my curiosity in Environmental Science. I have gained respect for nature and all that it has to offer and would love to have the ability to protect the natural beauty it beholds.

There are various aspects and specialties in the study of animal science. When looking at animal science as a broad study, it can seem quite amature. Once the break down begins and all the different aspects of animal science, it gets overwhelming and too hard to grasp. Luckily scientists have their areas of specialties and are able to work together to bring us the comprehensive knowledge we have today. Everyone is tied to agriculture, whether they realize it or not. We would not be here if it was not for agriculture. Agriculture provides our jobs, shelter, clothing, food, etc. Animal Science takes those simple categories and advances
What is aquatic biology? Aquatic biology is very similar to marine biology in that you study ecology, behavior of plants and animals, and microbes; however, instead of the main focus being saltwater, aquatic biologists study things like rivers, wetlands, ponds, and other freshwater resources (princetonreview.com). Being an aquatic biologist comes with many crazy experiences, some in college, others with diving, and some with preserving the environment.
