You’re on vacation with eight of your closest teenage girl friends and are staying in a cabin house at the mountains. It’ the middle of the night, you’re sleeping soundly in your bunk, suddenly you hear noise outside of your window. You begin to panic, yet you don’t want to wake anybody up, convincing yourself it’s nothing you fall back asleep. Plenty of minutes later you hear a louder noise and decide to look outside your window, little did you know a six-foot black bear would be staring you down. After waking everyone up, you decide to call Animal Protection Hotline and explain to them that a black bear appears to be outside your cabin. They send a specialist to remove the bear, so out of curiosity you ask where the bear is going to be taken. They say that it will be held at the local zoo where he will be residing now and a zoologist will care for it. While many people think that zoology only deals with zoo animals, conservation and animal relocation are important parts of the field of zoology. Zoology is the intense research of animals, dead or alive, and the caring for their well-being as well as ensuring species management and survival.
When you mention zoology plenty of people link it to zoos and caring for animal habitats, yet they don’t know that Zoology originates from Ancient Greek. (7) Aristotle is known as the founder of Zoology because he was the first to be intrigued by exotic animals. He published his research that he kept while studying certain species in the book “De Animalibus” in 1476. (7) Even though Aristotle investigated a variety of different animals his main focus was Marine Life. (7) A bird’s egg fascinated him because it led him to investigate the gender differentiation s. (7) When Aristotle’s book be...

Considering the many challenges animals face in the wild, it is understandable that people may be eager to support zoos and may feel that they are protective facilities necessary for animal life. In the article “ Zoos Are Not Prisons. They Improve the Lives of Animals”, Author Robin Ganzert argues that Zoos are ethical institutions that enrich the lives of animals and ultimately protect them. Statistics have shown that animals held in captivity have limited utilitarian function resulting in cramped quarters, poor diets, depression, and early death for the animals thus, proving that Zoos are not ethical institutions that support and better the lives of animals as author Robin Ganzert stated (Cokal 491). Ganzert exposes the false premise in stating
As one develops knowledge of this career it is essential to have an understanding for what it is regarding. Zoology is a branch of biology that concerns the study of animal life (Zoology). Animals, in this frame of reference, are any living organisms that are not fungi, plants, viruses or bacteria. Animals include creatures like marine sponges, jellyfish, frogs, worms, rock lobsters, snails, insects, birds, fishes and mammals (Types of Zoologists Z). Zoology has evolved into a different study as it now consists of psychology and ecology; where as it use to only concentrate on the structures and function of the cell (Zoology). Zoology applying ideas and techniques to life processes has not only grouped together different fields, but also created connections to other science fields; it allows animal’s relationships with each other and its environment to be explained more easily (Hanson). Zoology embodies organizations that carry groups of individuals that are educated in an equivalent field. The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) is the most substantial membership group for zoology majors. The AZA has over 6,000 members worldwide at professional levels. Also, The Zoological Association of America welcomes all levels of zoology m...
.... Some animals face endangerment because of human’s hunting activities and because of the climate changes. Due to the endangered rare species, people solve this problem by bringing these animals back to their natural habitat.
The first point of view from this issue is the side that believes humans, zoos and other facilities should be allowed to keep animals. The places that captivate animals believe that they are doing a favor to the creatures. They believe that they are saving them from being killed by humans. They say that if they would not have taken in these animals they would have died in the wild. They say they’re giving them a fresh new start and a place to live without worry. For example, in this article they state that zoos try and h...
In all ages, when it comes to grizzly bears, people’s first thought was that they are dangerous, and get away from them if you met them. Nevertheless, different from the past, today’s humans especially children are exceedingly willing to visit grizzly bears in the zoo. Furthermore, bear watching becomes one of the most popular activities for animal lovers who come from all over the world, and a survey indicates that in Greater Yellowstone, a nature-based bear watching tourism economy is worth “more than $1 billion annually.” (Yellowstone's Grizzly Bears Should Not Be Hunted) Besides, if hunters fortuitously shoot a famous bear, this may “ignite public outrage, like the case of Cecil the Lion.” (Yellowstone's Grizzly Bears Should Not Be Hunted) Additionally, because of grizzly bears’ “rarity,” (Yellowstone's Grizzly Bears Should Not Be Hunted) their “economically worth far more alive than as a person's rug or trophy.” (Yellowstone's Grizzly Bears Should Not Be
In the film, Madagascar, zoos are depicted as a sanctuary in which all the exotic animals are kept safe and are open for the public to view. But many would argue that zoos are inhumane, the charging of animals for our personal entertainment is unjustifiable. Those who believe that zoos are wrong and should be destroyed are animal rights activists; they believe that animals should be allowed to choose their own destiny. Those that believe that zoos are an important part of our lives are scientists and zoologists. This debate has gone on for generations and average folk are stuck in the middle, not knowing which side to stand on.
Marine Biology is what I would like to study. I want to become a marine biologist because I want to discover new species. I want to go to the 70% of the ocean that has not been discovered. Marine biologists also get to go travel to different places. They not only get to seethings underwater which not many people get to see, but they also get to see places on land which not many people get to see. Marine biologists are also interesting to me because they get to swim for most of their work day. I love the water and swimming. Marine biology is a very interesting and intriguing career to me.
The park had animals such as deer, and grizzly bear and 120 other animals. Now, Henry Doorly Zoo is a home to over 17,000 animals, and different 962 species. However, with all of these different animals in the zoo, it upsets the animals’ native ecology. Even under the best circumstances at the best zoos, a zoo cannot start to replicate the wild animals’ habitat. Where a wild animal is free to roam and explore the world, one in a zoo is confined to a small area. Also, Zoos claim to want to protect species from extinction, but usually the zoos just want animals because they are exotic or popular. These exotic animals are put into an unnatural environment and upsets their native ecology. A zoo wants these exotic animals primarily for the purpose of promoting tourism and generating money. Zoos claim to want to protect species from extinction, which sounds good on the surface, but in reality only want to draw crowd and publicity. Also zoos claim that they are helping repopulate an endangered or exotic species, but the animals in the zoo are never going to return to the wild. Animals in the wild have to survive on a daily basis. They need to hunt, or gather food, and avoid predators. Animals in the zoos never experience any of this and would not survive in the
Have you ever felt sorry for animals in a cage? Animals are held captive all over the world; approximately over 1,700 species of animals are in a zoo. The effect of an animal being in a zoo can vary; some animals end up dying, while others are left there in a cage with nothing to do. Zoos have been around since about 1250 B.C, most leaders would use animals as entertainment and for fighting. For example, bears and bulls were chained together and fight another. Over four hundred bears were killed in one single day. After zoos were for entertainment, animals started fighting the humans, so they caged them. Zoo expert, David Hancocks believes that zoos need to change their idea of keeping animal’s hostage before many species die out. David believes that most zoos do not prevent animals from being extinct; it puts an animal in misery. Because animals are kept in zoos, animals are treated as abused captures (Jennifer 2).
From our loving pets that welcome us home every day, to the birds chirping in the morning, to the exotic animals we admire; animal safety and animal rights is a priority that gathers attention across the world. Being up close and personal with animals is a coveted experience that zoos try to bring to everyday life. While it is breathtaking to see these glorious animals it can possibly bring danger to their lives and call into question someone’s morals. The Denver Zoo claims that they rescue endangered or suffering animals from hostile environments and bring them into a safe, nurturing facility where they cater to the animals’ needs. With the demands of the people it is truly amazing that the Denver Zoo can properly care
Many zoos today say their main purpose is breeding endangered species in captivity and reintroducing them into the wild (Masci, D., 2000, April 28). Zoos have many benefits, not just for the animals themselves, but also the humans who can enjoy them. People, as a whole, are becoming increasingly distant from nature as we move to bigger cities and away from the wildlife. For many, real experiences with wild animals can only be found in zoos (Masci, D., 2000, April 28). With education comes recognition and worry. The wildlife experiences that people have at well taken care of zoos and aquariums are becoming even more crucial as we continue to urbanize our world (Masci, D., 2000, April 28). Visitors play a major part in the zoo animals’ well-being, relying on donations and the interest of the public to pay for procedures and new exhibits. People come to zoos with specific ideas and thoughts on what they expect to see. If the zoo looks bad, the animals look maltreated, or there is garbage all over the ground, the zoo 's reputation will dissolve and the animals will not thrive and may have to be sold to who knows where (Falk, Reinhard, Vernon, Bronnenkant, Deans & Heimlich, 2007). Zoos need the help of the communities to continue to provide a comfortable environment for their animals. People come to zoos to learn and expand their horizons by seeing animals from all
"The driving force behind today’s alarming decline in species is the destruction, degradation and fragmentation of habitat due to our increasing human population and wasteful consumption of resources."1 Everyday wildlife is forced to seek refuge in very remote, small areas. As the human population increases, land that was once inhabited by wildlife is urbanized to suit human needs. In other words, the land available for wildlife to survive on keeps diminishing. As houses and roads are constructed, forest are cut down and cleared; consequently eliminating the natural habitats of wildlife. This causes animals to migrate to new areas and seek refuge. Under certain, harsh circumstances, the animal may become extinct. Due to the propagation of the human species, greater and greater amounts of land are taken away from wildlife. Eventually all land will be commercialized for human needs, thus leaving wildlife lost in the shuffle. Human intervention in nature has caused disastrous effects to wildlife and will continue to occur until humans realize the outcomes of their actions.
As a child it is immediately installed in our minds that we are expected to become something, and to find a profession we want to do for the majority of our lives. We were, and still are constantly being asked "what do you want to be when you grow up?" and "what is your major?" These are questions you are expected to know, or at least have a general idea about. I was always told how important it is to find a profession that I am good at, that I love, and that I could make a profit with. I have always had a natural attraction and love for animals. For as long as can remember when I was asked "Camille what do you want to be when you grow up?" my answer was always a veterinarian with no hesitation. As I have grown my response has not changed. I know the path to this profession and the education needed to pursue it is not easy, but necessary for my future. In today's society it is nearly impossible to pursue a career without some sort of education under your belt, such as a high school diploma, G.E.D, and a higher education such as college. The type of education needed may vary according to the career that is trying to be pursued. For a career such as a veterinary higher education is a must. In order to obtain my dream job and to do something I actually like for most of my life I will have to use college as a tool, to gather the information I need to be accepted to a veterinary college. College is a way to better myself and gain the basic knowledge I need to go on to the next step on becoming a veterinarian.
Supporters of zoos argue that they help to conserve endangered species, but in fact they are not very good at this. Even the world famous panda-breeding programme has been very costly and unsuccessful. Also, zoo life does not prepare animals for the challenges of life in the wild. For example, two rare lynxes released into the wild in Colorado died from starvation even though the area was full of hares, which are a lynx’s natural prey.
