Animals “ are a part of our sustenance, our sociology, and our day-to-day lives.” Animals play a vital role in our lives that we live and why we study everything about them. By breaking down the study of animal science into meager sections, it makes the broad study of animal science more complex and harder to apprehend. Animal science specialities are not all hindrances, many are beneficial to the study of animals. When you break down the characteristics of animal science into smaller areas of study, it allows for in depth studies of each section. Scientist are able to advance their studies in each specialization by study on one small specialty at a time. With their advanced studies, they are able to bring forth important information like medications and feed formulas to help advance cattle production. Scientist are able to study deadly diseases to help cure or prevent spreading. They are able to study the ground and figure out soil solution to help mass production of crops. There are various aspects and specialties in the study of animal science. When looking at animal science as a broad study, it can seem quite amature. Once the break down begins and all the different aspects of animal science, it gets overwhelming and too hard to grasp. Luckily scientists have their areas of specialties and are able to work together to bring us the comprehensive knowledge we have today. Everyone is tied to agriculture, whether they realize it or not. We would not be here if it was not for agriculture. As one develops knowledge of this career it is essential to have an understanding for what it is regarding. Zoology is a branch of biology that concerns the study of animal life (Zoology). Animals, in this frame of reference, are any living organisms that are not fungi, plants, viruses or bacteria. Animal research has been a highly debatable topic. Research using animals has and will continue to help us discover things that would take much longer without the aid of the animal. Today many treatments and diseases have been discovered that were deadly years ago thanks to the research done to animals. As good as it sounds, the is always a dark side to every good story. Some of the animals are put through unnatural suffering and bodily harm. Unreasonable suffering is something that is not approved by society. This topic is one that may never come to a simmer. Knowing the pros and cons of this issue will help the reader decide for themselves wether animal research is immoral or worthy.
Why do we have to use animals for research? Many humans and animals get the same illnesses because animals are biologically similar to humans. Animals have a shorter life cycle than humans and as a result, they can be studied throughout their whole life span or across several generations. According to information from the Office of Technology Assessment, it is estimated that between 17 and 23 million animals are used in research each year. Approximately 95% of these animals are rats and mice specifically bred for research and 4.25% of these animals include rabbits, guinea pigs, sheep, fish, frogs, insects, and other species. Most importantly, only 0.75% of the animals in research are cats, dogs, and primates. Major medical advances have been made because of the research of these animals. (Animal Research 2013)

Those animals include rats (12%), frogs (1%), cats (0.8%), dog (0.6%), mice (69%), monkeys (0.1%), guinea pigs (1%), rabbits (1%), fish (10%), and birds (4%). Ever since animals have been domesticated, they have been very instrumental in providing humans with a plethora of benefits in multiple areas such as agriculture, medicine, and industry (Transgenic Animals). Today, animals and their products are used for almost everything from food to clothing to products we use on an everyday basis. Some argue that animals should not be used as much as they are being utilized; however the use of domesticated animals propelled humans from a nomadic species to a more civilized people. The domestication of animals was a keynote of the beginning of agriculture as a whole, which lead to industrialization and progression as human beings. Domesticated animals play a foremost role in our society today as well as in the future.
Current animal testing has been a contentious subject ever since it started off 150 years back. Although a lot of people discover animal testing inhumane and egoistic, it is a important factor to boost our understanding of medication and to improve our understanding of science. Animal testing, to some, is the way to ameliorating our level of living and preserving many lives, and therefore has many benefits. On the other hand, the negatives may not be passed, and scientists are constantly trying to decrease the damages with some methods they create in the process. Even so, to the dismay of numerous animal lovers in addition to those who are endeavoring for animal rights, animal testing will not be stopped every time soon because, for now, it is the most trustworthy form of testing that includes the safety of daily products we use more carefully than any other procedure.
Animals are used in research projects as a range of scientific techniques. They are used in human trials, computer modeling, cell cultures, and statistical techniques; however, animals are only used in research where no other techniques are available. There is some research you cannot use on human subjects or computers like reproducing a beating heart or stroke, understanding the complicity of different parts of a living system, from molecules to cells to systems like respiration and circulation. Although human subjects are used in some cases of testing new drugs or procedures, at times it is ethically unacceptable to use human subjects because of climate control testing, diet, housing, clean air environment, temperatures and genetic makeup; this is why animal subjects like rodents are used for research.
The entire human race benefits from animal research. “Without animal research, medical science would come to a total standstill”(O’Neil 210). It is not as if scientists and researchers just sit in their labs all day and torture animals for fun. Not to mention animal use is being reduced as much as possible, “most scientists are glad to use alternative tests because they are usually faster and cheaper than tests on animals”(Yount 72). However, “you cannot study kidney transplantation or diarrhea or high blood pressure on a computer screen”(O’Neil 212).
Research on animals is deemed necessary to develop vaccines, treatments, and cures for diseases and to ensure that new products are safe for humans to use. “The development of immunization against such diseases as polio, diphtheria, mumps, measles, rubella, pertussis, and hepatitis all involved research on animals […]” (AMPEF 1). Scientists have found many drugs by means of animal experimentation. To some people, animals are viewed as better test subjects than anything else. Scientists can control many aspects in an animal’s life such as their diet, the temperature, lighting, environment, and more. Animals are biologically similar, but not identical to humans and can form some of the same health problems. When these health problems are injected into an animal it can have the same physical reactions as a human could.
When the average person thinks about zoology, they usually think about a zoo and or animals. As said in General Zoology, many questions come with this topic. “What is life? In what ways are the various kinds of animals alike or unlike in structure, internal processes, and modes of life? How do animals carry on their activities? How are the many kinds related to one another? In what ways does man resemble and differ from other living things? The answers to many of these questions are provided by the science of zoology.” (General Zoology, page 3). While zoology does involve animals, the general study of zoology is far more complicated then one would imagine. Zoology is a branch of biology that studies the classification, origins, habitats and behaviors of organisms. Someone who studies zoology is a zoologist, and has the tasks of learning about new species and their habitats. It is a job that if mastered, can be one of the most fulfilling and knowledgeable careers someone can obtain.

He was pure white except for the left side of his face which shone off rose pink scar tissue. Where his left ear should have been stood only a stump the size of a thumb. His mouth was lopsided with stitches coming out of the right end, and he looked more like a burn victim than a dog, yet he had an imperative look of joy about him. Oogy had been used as bait for dog fighting when he was only ten weeks old.
This allows for scientists to have a better understanding of the way the human body functions and the effects drugs may have on humans. Animal testing broadens possibilities of finding cures for illnesses and diseases.
