How Physics Changed My Worldview And Perception Of Myself

513 Words2 Pages

My interest physics began in high school when my sister loaned me a book called “Space and Time in Special Relativity,” which, even though the book was introducing a difficult topic, required only algebra as a prerequisite. The book captured my attention and led me to dedicate many hours of study outside of school to trying to understand and visualize the thought experiments presented in the book. Although I cannot say that I managed to fully understand the concepts at the time, the ideas it introduced me to completely changed my worldview and perception of myself. Instead of the understanding of the material coming easily and naturally as it had in school, I had to invest considerable time and thought into success. I no longer viewed myself as a smart kid in a small town, but as someone who knew next to nothing. I became determined to find out more about the physics of the world. This feeling motivated me to seek out learning opportunities outside of my town and to apply to the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM.) OSSM was extremely challenging, but the expertise I acquired there allowed me to immediately jump …show more content…

These experiences have taught me the necessary skills that a physicist needs to research, and have helped prepare me for my internship at a solar cell institute in Germany last summer. In Germany, I was tasked with modeling the process of sodium diffusion into solar cells, which causes reduced efficiencies. This was something that had so far not been done before and only empirical models existed. I had to start from the ground up, making up my own theories, equations, and code to try to plausibly fit the data with only a small amount of input from my mentor. This experience was exceptionally meaningful to me because I learned to think for myself and to get past difficulties in problems without outside
