When I began high school, I was a little lost. My English was still frail- which was one of the reasons I kept to myself. When my homeroom teacher passed me the paper to choose a “career path,” I didn’t know what I was doing. All the words jumbled in my head and I didn’t bother to ask because I did not know how. I think I chose ‘cosmetology’ probably because it sounded like its Spanish version. Nevertheless, my sophomore year, things started to clear up, I was now considered fluent and actually understood what was happening. That same year I changed my cluster to STEM- I have always loved science and I truly knew that was my passion. Everyday after class, I would go home and read more on the subject. Passing hours on end reading through science journals and reading recent studies wasn’t a strange day for me. …show more content…
I knew I wanted to pursue science, but I wanted to help people as well. I wanted to help people who couldn’t help themselves. I wanted to help those less who didn’t have my luck in the world. During my senior year in high school I helped at the Vannie Cook Hematology Center, seeing those kids made me realize that I could help them. I was aware that I could grow up to change their life. There I realized- I knew I wanted to make a difference for those people, and people who suffer similar faiths. My junior year I changed my cluster to Health Sciences. I never changed it again. In fact, on the next 10 years, I hope to attend Medical
Many years ago there was a small boy who was woken by a loud scream. Terrified, he ran from his room to find his mother unconscious on the floor. His little sister was screaming as he pulled his mom onto her back in desperation. In reality, he didn’t know what to do to save her and his helplessness was due to his lack of knowledge. She passed away that night. That boy was me. Our past defines us no matter how we protest; it can either pull you down into failure or lift you up towards success. From then on, I was drawn to medical sciences and used that helplessness to motivate my education.
There are many different types of careers in the cosmetology field. The different types are; hairstylist, perm or hair color specialist, manicurist, pedicurist, barber, or esthetician. Anyone can major in one of these careers, multiple ones, or all of them. It doesn't matter how many they major in, they will still be considered a cosmetologist. To get a major in cosmetology, it is required to take a class in the career you are interested in. A typical cosmetology training program typically lasts nine months to about a year. Students are instructed on hair styling and cutting, scalp treatments, hair color, manicures and pedicures, chemical texture services, acrylic nail application, massages, facials, and eyebrow shaping. A student then takes advanced courses to expand their knowledge in this career. These courses may include studies on scalp disorders and diseases, scalp analysis, color application techniques, hair cutting tools, main principles of hair design, hair removal, massage techniques and benefits, cosmetology law and safe work practice. Once the course is finished, including service hours, the person then has to take and pass a state exam on the course. Once the exam is passed, the person then receives their certificate.

Every since I was a child I have had a passion for doing other people’s hair. When I was little I would use my baby dolls as clients and work on their hair until it was perfect and neat. I have chosen to be in the cosmetology field because I like to help other people with their needs and wants as well as mine. I am aware that while working in this industry I will work with many different ethnic groups and many different hair types. I feel I can do anything as long as I have the determination to do so. Many people go to cosmetology school to work for someone else, but I would like to open up a mini-salon out of my own home someday.

Cosmetology is a profession with a long history that requires intense schooling, implements a variety of techniques, practical knowledge and a high degree of that blend of communication and psychology which most people refer to as "people skills.". The word “Cosmetology” comes from the Greek civilization, some of the very first evidence of makeup was found in Mesopotamia, people figured this out by finding their carvings and portraits. From the carvings and portraits, they can tell that mostly only the rich and “powerful” could afford to paint their faces and nails. Egyptian hieroglyphics and paintings were discovered; they suggest that men and women of both noble classes used eye shadow to enhance the sizes of their eyes. Native Americans loved human sacrifice, after they sacrificed the humans, they put makeup on
A rating-scale survey given in February and repeated in April to the same freshmen students provided insight into how freshmen viewed STEM subjects and whether they felt capable of success. It asked questions such as “Do you feel supported by the school in STEM careers?” Results from the survey indicated that interventions such as time spent in Advisory working on academic and career plans ha...
Cosmetology has led me to dentistry. At fifteen, to better support my family financially, I pursued a cosmetology license. For two years, I balanced school, a part-time job and a 1500-hour cosmetology course. Shortly after becoming a licensed esthetician, I was promoted to a team manager and I trained others in technique and use of equipment, distributed work, made quick decisions in a fast-paced environment and accommodated customer complaints.
For as long as I can remember, people have asked me a series of questions. What do you want to do when you grow up, what career path are you leaning toward, and why is that what you want to do with your life? When I was younger I always answered with, “I want to be a famous singer because I love to sing, duh.” (even though I wasn’t good at all). As I got older I knew that was unrealistic and I needed to come up with a job I could actually make happen. After changing my mind to many times to count, I finally chose one that I believe best suits me, a cosmetologist.
In high school, I was among those students who always indicated that I will be going college. However, unlike most people I seem to meet these days I did not know that I wanted to be a doctor. When it was time to head off to college, I was still unsure of what I wanted to pursue. As most college freshmen, I did not know what major best suits my personality. I desired a career that would define who I am and a career that is self-gratifying. However, the path that I should follow was unclear to me. Because of my uncertainty I failed to see that my parents dream became my reality. As I began my college experience as a nursing student, I felt somewhat out of place. I realized that my reason for majoring in nursing was my parents' influence on me. They wanted me to believe that nursing is right for me. I always knew I wanted to go into the medical field, but I felt that I needed to know how to choose a medical specialty that I feel is right for me. My first step was to change my major. I chose to change my major to biology. My love for science led me to this decision. I began to explore the opportunities open to biology students.
As a freshman, I was conflicted about what I wanted out of college. At the time, I naively believed that I would major in Neuroscience and Arabic while completing plenty of biomedical research on the side. Perhaps I would also sign up for a few clubs here and there and thus produce the perfect resume for medical school. In the following year, I realized that my heart was not into the breakneck agenda I planned for myself and I started to reevaluate just what exactly I wanted to pursue in my undergraduate experience. With the aid of many advising sessions I gained a clearer picture of my passions, which as I had come to realize, were what I truly wanted to work towards. Among my interests is Global Health -- in particular, I wish to learn more

Before this I was 16 and had no idea where I wanted to go in my life. With graduation approaching the pressure to decide on a career was getting greater and greater. I always felt in my heart that I needed to do something that would have a positive impact on other people and not just myself, and that I needed to use what God has blessed me with to help people. Being in that environment and around all those sick children made me feel something that I had never felt before. I felt a sense of compassion, inspiration, and a desire to change someone's life by loving and caring for them when they can’t care for themselves, like the nurses did for those patients. Little
