The ACT is a test taken by high school students for colleges around the nation to see an overall knowledge of subjects you learned in school so far. I have not taken the ACT test myself yet but i plan on taking it this year. Since I do want to go to college, I would really like a score that is above average. Colleges love high ACT scores for scholarships and I would like to not have a ton of student loans with me for the rest of my life. Before the test I will have to work on my weaknesses and build on my strong points like english and science. Some of my strengths in english and writing are fluent grammar, correct spelling, and coherency. Most of the time when I am writing I read my sentence that I had just wrote to see if there are any errors
She states in her article “my talents for spotting others writers’ boo-boos goes out the window when I proofread my own work. To say I’m terrible at catching my own mistakes is an understatement” ( CasaGrande). CasaGrande discuss how she good at noticing other people problems and errors, but she can’t her own doesn’t matter if its writing or reading her work. She saying no matter how much she can read her own work; Casagrande still won’t see errors that she made if another person was to read her work. That’s gives an example of how the brain approach reading and writing differently. “No matter the subject or message, my writing often contains errors I can’t catch” (Casagrande) meaning that it doesn’t matter the topic of the message that you’re writing you’ll never see the error that you made. The topic or message could be very important and you still will make and error this just show how the brain is differently when writing. “When the brains perform high-level tasks, they generalize simpler task like spelling” (CasaGrande) the brain performs other task like gathering thoughts on what to discuss or looking for errors that it misses simple things. When reading your own work, you’re sharing information and ideas that you thought about. The ideas that you thought about might have seemed accurate so you don’t notice them. When, writing coherent words on paper or
errors that could easily be fixed. This is because I reread the gibberish I write and polish it up. My papers
Evidence: The ACT tests, or the American College Test, is defined as “a standardized test to determine a high school graduate’s preparation for college-level work.” (foreignborn.com)
High school students begin in kindergarten preparing for tests; to make it to the next level you have to make a certain score. Pressure is forced upon many students when they begin sophomore year; they begin to ponder the thoughts of college and life after high school. Once they have planned out their school, major, and work life after college, the school counselor plans a meeting to discuss the ACT. Students begin to be worried and anxious about grades and tests; all of these stressed students do not realize they have been passing test after test to score a good enough grade to get into college, where they will begin to take test after test to graduate college and even after college, these students will still be tested within their workforce. The ACT is taken multiple times by individual students to get into college. They test and worry to get the score needed to get into college to test and worry more. College is not needed to maintain a good occupation, however many people recommend attending college. Students do not spend many years preparing for college; students spend many years preparing for tests, particularly the ACT which gets a student into college. The ACT is one of the most important tests a student sees during high school. After high school it might be the bar examination, which is then more important than the ACT, but first you must score well enough on the ACT, or you will never get the opportunity to take the bar
When I read “Proficiency” by Shannon Nichols I really felt for her. I understood and resonated with her story perfectly, especially when she stated “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about.” (83). After I failed my writing assignment I was so embarrassed and didn’t want to write again but obviously, I had to. I always doubt the things I am going to say or which order I am going to organize the essay in. I try so hard to make sure all my sentences are cohesive and all my ideas connect to each other and the main concept but sometimes it just seems that when I keep messing with one little sentence or paragraph I just makes things worse.
After reading the essay On Writing by Stephen King, it was apparent that improving writing skills is important. The beginning to forming a better career is to first read because “one learns most clearly what not to do by reading bad prose”. (King) Improving writing skills can further improve verbal communication skills and help to advance in life. When someone improves their writing skills, they can then improve their verbal communication skills. Improving both verbal and written communication skills will lead to a better career path.
Success isn’t given, it’s earned on the track, on the field, and in the gym with blood, sweat, and the occasional fear” -Unknown. This is relevant because it is hard for students to want to play sports but also to do well in school. If high school students can’t find the time to keep their grades up or to keep a certain GPA, they should not be allowed to play sports. Students need to prove themselves to be able to play any sport and still be able to do well in school. Also, having good grades shows the coach maturity and may earn them more playing time if they are working hard in school and in practice.
When taking the two different personality tests, I received the same result for both. I am considered to have an ISFJ (Introvert, Sensing, Feeling, and Judging) personality type. These personality tests I believe help believe get more in depth with the type of person they are but also help them to see there are other people in the world that are like them. A few known people that are similar to my personality type are mother Teresa, and Barbra Bush. Along with learning about others like me, I was able to realize more into my strengths and weaknesses.
Another one of my strengths as a writer and a student is my determination to complete every assignment to the best of my ability. I have never been the type of student that does not get her work done, whether it be an essay for English or a workbook page for Geometry. I work diligently in all my classes and aim to learn as much as I can from every assignment. Since English is not my best subject, I work twice as hard to improve every day and bring out the best writer in me. My determination is what drove me to enhance my weaknesses and polish my strengths.
My ACT PLAN test composite score was an 18. I scored at or above (67%) of the United States and (38%) at or above my school. I scored the highest in English with a 21, which is above the benchmark. For Math, Science, and Reading I tied with a 17, all below the benchmark. The highest score that could be made was a 32 for the ACT PLAN Test. The highest score to be made on the ACT is a 36, and my predicted range of ACT score results were 19-22. We also got results back from the world of work map. These results will help me better myself with knowing what career I want to choose. My results included the following: engineering and technologies; natural science and technologies; medical technologies; medical diagnosis and treatment; social science; applied arts; and creative and performing arts. (ACT, Incorporated).
My strengths as a writer have grown even stronger throughout the semester. Coming in, I was great at grammar and punctuation. I knew most of the rules and how to use them
I have come about what my strengths and weaknesses are in my writings. What I tend to do wrong in my papers is trying to get the topic to stay on the topic throughout the paper. I tend to jump around topic to topic and my sentences just start to run on and repeat the same things. My strengths in writing is making sure that I make sure that I always back up my points and make sure that my paper fits the topic. “Good start— the cookie description has nice sensory details to draw your reader in.” (Prof. Church) When re-reading my papers, I don’t seem to find mistakes that my revisers find. I believe that I just am use to the way I write and the in corrections don’t jump out for me. “Listen to this sentence aloud, and then re-word it more clearly.” (Prof. Church)
When it comes to my schoolwork, I tend to be extremely conscientious, diligent, and ambitious. A few of my academic strengths are my organizational skills and ability to think critically. A weakness that I have is test taking; while taking tests I become nervous, and forget the information. I become upset with myself if I earn a C on a test or in a class. Then I consider what I could have done differently to receive a higher grade and apply it to future assignments. I react this way when it comes to my studies, because my dad used to get upset with us if we received anything below a B in specific subjects. For example, if we got a C in math my dad would say, “You don’t know how to count? I guess I will stop giving you money since you cannot count it.” He would also reward us for being able to count and getting good grades. When I was a little girl, he used to put out money and give us 30 seconds to count it, if we counted
Colleges use the score to get an idea of student academic abilities. I do not believe a high or low ACT score would affect a student’s future in college. The test on the ACT is different as the test students would perform in college. Test taking in college is way more simple to prepare for because it allows students to test over material they learned rather than testing over different material and questions students never seen before. The score is not gonna determine the students work ethic and intelligence of whether they would have success in
Some say students with good grades and modest testing did better in college than students with higher testing and lower grades. I know plenty of graduated students who ended with a low GPA and high ACT score, and no trouble getting into college. This means everyone should be doing well on the ACT because before getting into college, you should already know most of the information that prepares you for your major and classes you will be taking. One’s ACT score accurately
