Introduction I have been a student at Heriot-Watt University for two semesters, and over the course of my stay I have grown and learned more than I thought possible. Going through the Approaches to learning program (APL) has taught me so much more, like oral presentation skills. It helped me to grow self-confidence. I did not just develop my self-confidence but I have learned here how to search for relevant information relating to the specific topic given and learned critical thinking as well. Most importantly I have learned how important oral presentation is. I quickly found out that that there was so much more to it. One specific experience I had while at Heriot-Watt University, My group mates and I stayed back so that we can plan our presentation out. We had a great time and we learned so much more than we ever could have done from doing an individual presentation. The opportunity to do that showed me that there are so many ways that one can learn that are both fun and educational. Preparing for Oral Presentations There are four things to think about when preparing for an oral p...
1. Why should even practiced speakers plan their presentations when addressing a business audience instead of just “winging it”?
I learned significantly a lot more than I would have previously. The example of lactose intolerance was very interesting; it really did give prime reasoning to human adaption. The concept of current human evolution was surprising to me; it is shown through evidence that I would not have connected to before. I found value in the talk by how well it relates to real life events and how these examples give confirmation to this theory. Pobiner left the audience with the indecisive question that left me wondering: is this adjusting or adapting? Only the future will
Some barriers I faced while I was preparing the teaching project was trying to word the project so that the group could understand it. In addition, I had problems with trying to avoid giving to much information because I didn't want them to become disinterested. The developmental characteristics of the respective group helped me format the project suitable for learning and relevant to the participants. This was done so that effective teaching was done. Changes that I would consider if i had to do it again would be to post signs prior to the presentation so that perhaps more people would come and join.
Have you ever thought of taking a public speaking class in school? If you haven?t I highly suggest that you do because it will increase your ability to communicate with other human beings and just make it easier. Today, I will be talking about a couple of abilities that you can greatly improve by taking a simple introductory course in public speaking. I will be talking about the importance of a good attention getter, a clear presentation of your points, and eye contact with the audience.
President Obama finally announced his college promise, emphasizing that “in America, a quality education cannot be a privilege that is reserved for a few,” and added that “certainly… nobody with that drive and discipline should be denied a college education just because they don’t have the money”. Republican Tennessee governor Bill Haslam’s announcement during his 2014 state of the state address, was in which he promised two years of community college, trade school, or any public four year university. The high school seniors of this academic year can apply for the Tennessee promise scholarship between august and November of this year, and may use the scholarship to attend any of the thirteen community colleges, twenty
Personally, having attended seminars which were relatively non-interactive and boring, I found it beneficial to my learning to be engaged and put into practice the skills taught, in contrast with the previous seminars. We were encouraged to work along with members from other disciplines, which I initially felt apprehensive about however, I now understand how IPE aids professional development, breaking down stereotypes or prejudices about other professions. The seminar also made me realise the importance of physically practicing the skills in order to embed them in the memory. Furthermore, I learned the importance of comprehending no emergency is the same and need to be approached differently. Looking back, I regret the negative mind-set in which I approached the seminar, I feel initially it prevented me from totally availing from the valuable skillset I was being
After re watching my own presentation I have noticed many different things that I didn’t think of or notice when I was originally presenting it. While watching it some of the things that I think I did well on where first my talking. This is something that I know I did better on because I did my presentation a little different from everyone else. Another thing that I think worked well for my presentation was the word to picture ratio. I felt like I did a good job not putting my entire script on the screen but enough to give the class a good summery about what I was talking about. Some areas of the rubric that I still think I need to work on is being more specific on answering the essential question making it more obvious as to what my over
In conclusion, I think my practicum was a rich learning experience. I was exposed to various community organizations and I have the opportunity to interact and communicate with people with varying backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
The class helped me learn how to overcome fear of public speaking which was brought about by anxiety and fear which was mainly contributed by lack of exposure. During this class I learned many ways of overcoming this menace, the class groups that served as the audience helped in practicing and getting over the anxiety and fear I also got positive critic...
Coming into speech class, I mentally and physically prepared myself for what was in store. I never really like giving speeches, especially impromptu speeches. Signing up for speech was hard for me to do because I absolutely did not want to take it and was considering not taking it in high school and wishing that I would never have to take it. My fears for COMM 101 was being judged. I am not really one to care about what people think about me, but something about public speaking gives me a fear that people will judge me if I stutter or not be able to complete a speech. I just wanted to do my best in this class and just breeze through this class and get it over with. Getting up in front of the class for my first speech, was petrifying for me
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
This course opened my eyes to the importance of dialogue in ways that I had not previously considered. I did not know in counseling you should only talk 30 percent of the time and that the remaining 70 percent should be the counselee’s time to talk. My typical counseling sessions in the past were about 50/50 dialogue. I thought that the counselee needed my opinion. A majority of my sessions included this amount of dialogue, which I am now understanding was not helpful to those people. Even though several people did have great results due to our sessions, they will looked to me in the future for more answers to various problems. This made the counseling relationship more dependent on my advice rather than them talking out their problem
It was made clear in our first seminar that there would be group presentations in the subsequent seminars and everybody would be given the chance to speak. This was to ensure that at the end of year, we would not be having any stuttering problems or major tension in facing the class during our presentation week. I realized along the way, that this not only helped me improve my presentation skills but it helped me get closer to the subject marketing. What I feared was so temporary; before long I enjoyed my marketing class more. I looked forward to those group activities, in which we were given time to converse, to find out about each other and also to know what exactly we were learning. It was through these activities I understood the subject more intensely.

This course has helped me in many ways, especially time management, health, and money. Instead of having a very relaxing week and then panicking at the end of the week when everything is due, this course has helped me to plan out my studies. Planning them out helps me produce higher quality work and assists me with my stress problem. One thing that has helped a lot is getting short easy assignments or parts of assignments done in short periods of extra time I have. For example, instead of turning on that TV, wait ten minutes and knock out an assignment. Another asset for myself has been setting dates to have assignments done. Although these assignments may not be due on that day, getting them done and out of the way, makes more time for other
