In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance. Relaxing before a speech is very important, it calms the nerves and helps you prepare for the speech instead of being completely nervous and messing up during the speech. Having this be said, relaxing is a very important thing for me to do before I go up and do a presentation. If I were to not relax and calm myself before my speech, like doing breathing exercises, I would overthink everything and mess up my whole speech because of my nervousness. For the future, if there ever comes a time that I need to present for any certain reason, I will be sure to relax and keep calm before a presentation. Practice is a major role that needs to be played when it comes to presenting. Practicing, I feel gives you more confidence in your speech, and more preparation than if you were to not practice. Rehearsing before the speech then presenting makes you seem like you actually know what you are talking about even if the only reason you know all these facts is because of study and practicing. Practicing through my speech really helps me with my presentation, if I practice enough, I feel very confident to where I wouldn’t need t a paper to look at notes during the speech. This concept is important for anything. Practicing will always help you with any future task. Credibility is important when doing a speech, making sure that you won’t take up all the credibility, either stat... ... middle of paper ... ...e, also moving arms and gestures are important, but not too much to distract the audience. Theories I learned in public speaking are in regular conversations, you get all lots of feedback and interest from the other person and in large group, and you get some or none at all. This really heightens all kinds of risks of being plain, confusing, or boring. You can easily avoid in normal conversation between just two people or a very small group who have the same interests. Also, it helps to remember that when people sit considerately without speaking, they are usually watching some sort of screen optimized to entertain them. So to ask a large, captive group to sit and listen to a speech is to make a very big demand, and you must use your time sparingly and wisely. It’s generally not the time for an argument. It is to provide an understanding and desire for the audience.
The delivery of my speech portrays a sense of calmness and seriousness. I used this style of speaking to show the importance of my subject, lack of organ donors. Throughout the presentation I used note cards as a guide and frequently made eye contact with my audience. When giving facts that I felt were important I made sure to look at the camera to show there significance. I also added my input into some of the facts to try and convince my listeners to become organ donors
Though I had some strong points in my informative speech, I still feel there was a lot I could improve upon. I could not recognize any vocalized pauses but I noticed that at certain points of speech where I would transition from one point to another, I would push my glasses up. I don’t remember if this was because my glasses were actually slipping down or because I was nervous. Also, after watching my video, I found that in the beginning of the speech I was swaying a lot, but because I was standing behind the table it wasn’t that noticeable. There are many ways to get the attention of an audience. The speaker could tell a story that is personal and on topic, along with using voice infection and variation. The speaker should also be sure that the presentation will “have interesting, relevant, and up-to-date information on the topic that is being presented” (Keogh, 2015). Visuals, such as graphs and photos or animated graphics, are also a way to get the audience’s attention. Over the recent four months in Communication 1402 class, I have addressed three formal speechs and completed a number of chapters in the corresponding textbook “Communication Works”. This course of Communication aims to provide general information what public speaking is and how to address a public speaking. Recalling back the experience during the processes of completing the Speech to Imform, Speech to Persuade, and Group Presentation, I will draw a conclusion about this course and these three presentations in five aspects, comprising my previous perception of public speaking before this course; learning from the Speech to Inform; the goal and evaluation of Speech to Persuade; learning from the Group Presentation; the most important thing learned from this course.
Writing a speech is easy. Telling someone about a speech you have to give is easy. Practicing your speech is easy. Giving a speech is not. Through my public speaking class I learned a lot about the art of giving speeches, creating a logical outline of my speech, and a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of my public speaking ability. My overall strengths as a speaker are that I can maintain eye contact with an audience and can convey the passion I have for certain topics to my audience. My overall weaknesses are that I can get caught talking to fast, causing me to skip sentences or words, and my ability to create an outline for my speech. I will go through my informative and persuasive value speech looking at three different criteria’s, content, delivery and overall assessment, and asses myself thoroughly. Even though I do not have the audio to my informative speech, I can still assess my mannerisms and eye contact.
After re watching my own presentation I have noticed many different things that I didn’t think of or notice when I was originally presenting it. While watching it some of the things that I think I did well on where first my talking. This is something that I know I did better on because I did my presentation a little different from everyone else. Another thing that I think worked well for my presentation was the word to picture ratio. I felt like I did a good job not putting my entire script on the screen but enough to give the class a good summery about what I was talking about. The success of an effectively motivating public speech is no doubt the most undeniable way to persuade a mass of people. A person’s confidence, persona, and suave can carry a nation. The speeches of Brutus, Antony, and King all had some form of effectiveness, no matter how long or short. The power of public speaking is a manipulative tool that can be used for good or bad, but if the motivation is pure, anything is possible.
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).

In order to convey this idea towards anxious students anticipating a mentally taxing course, I’ve developed three tips to prepare the upcoming prospects for a semester of public speaking. First, it is integral that the student does all the work assigned to them within the time allotted without slacking. This will give the student ample time to prepare, making room to edit last minute tweaks and changes to the speech, as well as room to practice properly. Secondly, practice the main content of your speech as much as possible and expect to forget minor details. Once you have the important points memorized, you can always adapt on the fly to external and internal distractions. Before coming United States, I spent around 18 years going to school in China. I can say, in China, we do not or at least seldom do public speaking. What we do is mostly sitting down as listeners and hearing others do their presentation. In short, we, normal Chinese students, do not have the opportunity to give a speech. However, I guess I am one of the lucky people. I was selected as the compere for many big events. Even I was not giving an entire speech, I still had the chance of standing in front of many audience.
