Essay About Being A Compere

Before coming United States, I spent around 18 years going to school in China. I can say, in China, we do not or at least seldom do public speaking. What we do is mostly sitting down as listeners and hearing others do their presentation. In short, we, normal Chinese students, do not have the opportunity to give a speech. However, I guess I am one of the lucky people. I was selected as the compere for many big events. Even I was not giving an entire speech, I still had the chance of standing in front of many audience. So I think I will discuss this in this paper.

My first time being as a compere seems to happen yesterday, and I can remember every single details of that day. After my teacher announced me that I would be the compere of the School’s Art Event. I was so surprised and wanted to refuse. However, my teacher

insisted that I should try this. Without other choices, I took this mission. In the next week, I wrote the draft by myself, modified repeatedly, and finally had one that I was satisfied with. When the moment that I was about to walk to the stage, I was so nervous. I could feel that my hands were sweating, my heart jumped as if it was going to jump out from my throat. The most embraced is that I went to the restroom again and again. When I had to go to the stage, I felt my legs shaking. I cannot even hold the microphone. I remembered that I stood at the stage for about fifteen seconds without saying anything, I was so frightened. I thought I stood there for a year! Then audience sitting down the stage started applauding. I understood that they wanted to help me picking up my courage and I could not standing there and do nothing. I tried my best to remember what I wrote at first and I failed to do that. Then I decided to start with greeting. After that, my draft gradually came back to my mind, not the entire of it, but just some brief ideas and orders. I can say this information saved my life. I quickly restructured the information, language, and have them spoken out fro my mouth. What surprised me is that once I came out with the first sentence, the rest came out easily and fluently. Then I tried to relax myself. I started making eye contact with the audience, using some body language to make me look more natural. After I finished introducing the first performance, I walked down from the stage. I felt that one of my hands that holding the microphone was wet because of sweating. My teacher walked to me with a proud look at me. She said that I was so great. I was full of energy then and finished the whole event successfully. This experience comes into my mind every time when I need to prepare for a event as a compere. I am not that afraid of standing in front of people right now, as long as I am well prepared.
I am worried about taking this class even I have the experience of standing in front of many people.

I am international student and English is not my first language. I just came here for a year, and I don’t think I can speak fluently even in a normal daily talk. I am worried because I cannot use English to express my ideas well and more importantly, sometimes grammars, pronunciations, and vocabulary problem me. I know speak slowly may help a little bit, but sometimes my brain runs fast and my mouth cannot follow it, which will change in to a situation that I just stand there and say nothing. I will be shamed if I say something wrong in front of others who take English as their first language and can combine their language and their ideas so easily, which I am jealous about. I take this class because not only it is required, but I hope my English skill will be improved by taking this class. I hope I will not be afraid of using English to express my ideas. I hope I can talk like a local people who have English as their first language. I know this maybe too many for a-semester-long class, but I will do my best effort to make some of these come

true.
