Leadership is one of the most sought after skills in the professional world and a fantastic skill to possess outside the workplace. However, while many people can give the dictionary definition of leadership not many understand what it truly means to be a leader. As Teddy Roosevelt said, “People ask the difference between a leader and a boss…The leader works in the open, and the boss in covert. The leader leads, and the boss drives.” This quote captures the essence of what leadership truly is; leading a group to their common goal together rather than as a unit of people led by one individual who only has their own interests in mind. Anyone can be a boss and tell people what they need to do to help the boss reach his goal but a leader will listen to others and the result may end up greater than it would have as a unit working under a boss. With a good understanding of what leadership is and knowing how to lead, anyone can become a great leader. While anyone can be a good leader there are some traits that lend themselves especially well to building leadership skills. Commitment and honesty (Prive) are perhaps two of the most important skills for a leader because if the leader behaves unethically there will likely be little value placed on ethics in the group and its work. The environment a good leader should strive to create is one where the positivity, creativity, confidence, and inspiration (Prive) of the leader radiates out to all members of his team. Another trait a good leader must possess is the ability to communicate in a thorough and appropriate manner, as the leader is often the one in charge of communicating both inside and outside his group, whether delegating tasks within the group or updating outside individuals on the... ... middle of paper ... ...at are in the news provides an opportunity to look at how these people use their own leadership skills and styles to lead several thousand people and influence millions more with their products. While not everyone becomes a CEO, leadership skills are necessary in any profession not only for potential advancement but also for getting the day-to-day work of an individual and their team done in an efficient manner. Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
The contemporary leadership we researched was Situational, Distributed, and Collaborative. We researched all these because we thought that this type of prInciples would make the game more interesting for the players and leaders. I felt that with these principles we would have a chance to show how to effectively apply it, the research we did supposedly told how each principle worked and how to effectively apply it. Some other examples of the research were that what games apply to these principles the most which were for situational was capture the flag, this game was that you had to get the ball and bring it to your side, but when the opponent gets the ball from your goal. The team would have to go from attacking to defensive instantly which show that when a situation changes how a person reacts to the change, for distributed was the four squared game In which the team with the ball had to get the other team out, in this game there was a use of two principles in one collaborative and distributed as an example some people would have to mark the opponent and work together to get the person out. We used Situational, Distributed, Collaborative, we delivered collaboratively and the distributed perfectly because we worked with each other and the rest of the class to work out an outcome since our game wasn't that good and people kept asking if they could change the rules which made us think if we needed more time to execute our game , since we only had 50 mins to play . I felt that we all had a say in how to apply the principles of the group Kent said by playing the game While I went into some depth to try and think how it would affect the game and we as leaders, which came to the conclusion to play more games that would high...
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Leadership skills are not always a gift given to everyone at birth, for some like me, it is something that has to be nurtured and developed. The natural gifts I possess would be that of nurturing and caring for others. Things that come easily to others is something I must work at to become proficient, the skills are there but must be coaxed and encouraged to blossom and exert the abilities that lie within me. Over time God had endowed me with the ability to step up naturally and take the reins of leadership, not because of who I am but because of who He is and the work that God has for me.
A single human being is so incomprehensibly complex that it is nearly impossible for two to be alike. Despite being so vastly different, certain qualities are shared among successful leaders. They share many characteristics that allow them to continue when others cannot, and there are quintessential qualities that help the most in making efficient individuals.
As Yukl (2010) indicates, such factors (e.g. personality, values and capacities) attributed to a leader. Normally it is widespread acknowledged that someone is born to be a lead...
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall concept of leadership traits, while observing the traits that were, or can be associated with successful leaders.
Leaders are very important to our world today. Leaders give the people they interact with a sense of comfort or value, and gain the admiration of others because of the leader’s support for them. Some of the most important characteristics for someone to become a leader are open-mindedness, communication, courage and bravery, patience, humility, responsibility, and empathy. These characteristics help a leader to show compassion and trust for others and thus gives the leaders the trust and compassion of others as well. Furthermore, anyone can become a leader in their own way. Being accessible, open, patient, responsible, caring,
Schwartz believes that there are four ways managers and leaders can strive to be better at their organizations. These methods include: celebrating moral exemplars, do the right thing, know the community, and be ordinary. The first of these methods is to celebrate moral exemplars. Leaders need to be proud and show off these exemplars because they show the way for others to follow. By showing how those who hold their moral in the highest of standards will get other people to admire and mimic them. I know that when I am in a work environment and I see a person in a rank higher than me do something great, I admire that persons and strive to be as good if not better than them.
Leadership is found not just at work but all around us. In any situation, leaders take a step forward and take charge of the situation. It can be at home, at work or at any other place. Leaders are never born, they become leaders because they have the credibility and people would love to follow them.
In doing these exercises I learned that specific traits can lead to good leadership skills that can be used to become a successful leader. It has taught me that a good leader is one who has a direct relationship with the people who they are leading. The assessment quizzes gave me good insight on my leadership skills and skills I need to enhance to become an effective leader. The following is what I have learned doing the assessment quizzes in the book.
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
