Schwartz believes that there are four ways managers and leaders can strive to be better at their organizations. These methods include: celebrating moral exemplars, do the right thing, know the community, and be ordinary. The first of these methods is to celebrate moral exemplars. Leaders need to be proud and show off these exemplars because they show the way for others to follow. By showing how those who hold their moral in the highest of standards will get other people to admire and mimic them. I know that when I am in a work environment and I see a person in a rank higher than me do something great, I admire that persons and strive to be as good if not better than them. The second part in striving to be a better leader is simply do the right thing. Schwartz talked about two other speakers in his video and one being Ray Anderson. Anderson made the business decision to do the right thing and in the end it helped benefit his company having a greater amount of profit come into the business. This goes back to an early class discussion where leaders …show more content…
Extraordinary people are great role models but not everyone can be extraordinary. However, everyone is ordinary but we all have different attributes that make us unique. It is these types of people that leaders to be and show those under them what they can become. Ordinary people are all around us and we make contact with them every day without knowing it. It is important that people choose the correct mentor because the values they instill in us will be with us for a long time. Arguably the best thing about ordinary people is that they can be extraordinary when the time calls. Going back to question the sign of wise person is the ability to improvise. It is during these times of improvising that ordinary people become extraordinary. Ordinary people are what make the world turn and being an ordinary leader is simple and
Leaders should lead by example. What a leader does and how they do it, serves as an example for others to follow. A leader’s behavior and actions are an important and effective way to influence the behavior of the people the lead. Leaders must treat other with dignity and respect. Leaders take responsibility for their actions, maintain their integrity by doing the right things and develop personable and commutative vision for their organizations. Leaders instill a sense of discipline; enforce organizational standards of the organization and do not turn a blind eye or overlook problems.
“In order to be a good leader, there are two things to remember. Lead from the Front and always set the Example. From these two leadership principles, everything else will fall into place.”
The most effective leaders know better than to try to be someone they are not. They should always be searching for opportunities to reinvest in their strengths. Leaders need to stay true to who they are and make sure they have the right people around them. The book says those who surround themselves with similar personalities are at a disadvantage to those who are secure enough to be surrounded by people who strengths will compliment theirs.
Pertaining to my future career I would want to become a transformational leader by empowering the interdisciplinary team as well as patient’s to meet their goals. Essential behaviours and attributes that a transformational leader should include the four principles charisma or ideal influences, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration (Ruggieri, 2015; Judge & Piccolo, 2004). Speaking to the four principles of transformational leadership charisma or ideal influences that I could display to identify myself to the team as a leader could include taking a stand and promoting new ideas to the group while also acknowledging followers needs at an emotional level (Judge & Piccolo, 2004). Charismatic leaders want
There is a lot that I want to accomplish from my leadership practice, but initially I prefer to be very careful on implementing those. Each person has their own objectives to accomplish as a leader-scholar-practitioner. Similarly, I too have plans to implement. My plans that I want to accomplish as a leader-scholar-practitioner are as follows:
preschool type program twice a week so I can have two half days to complete homework. The largest concern we had is my husband giving up his career as a lawyer after he spent three years in law school and has a hefty bill to pay back. We found he can do legal work on the side on the weekends to make some extra money to pay back his student loans that the government didn’t cover.
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.
Coming into this major I had no idea what to expect and the same went for this course, but I did know that it dealt with leadership, something that I have been steeped in for a good part of my life. So with that, it was hard to really set any goals as to what I would want to improve in with my leadership style but I was able to pin point a few aspects that could use some work through learning about different leadership techniques and methods. By learning about how leaders are formed, different approaches to leading groups and various aspects effecting group dynamics, I could determine an individuals or my own strengths in leadership and the methods necessary to effectively lead various types of groups. Also by observing many others in facilitating the after school program it gave me much more of an opportunity to see what works and what does not, this is an opportunity very few leaders get without being thrust into a role that they are ill prepared for.
The learning obtained from the Leadership and Organizational Behavior course has been valuable. From this course, I have learned that while someone can be a manager or a leader, it is better to be both. The various topics discussed throughout the eight week course have provided the unique insight necessary to be an effective leader. The insight gained allow for the identification of the behaviors that an effective leader must possess and continually develop. By identifying these behaviors, I am better able to shape my leadership style and goals so that I can achieve my full career potential as a leader within my organization. Ultimately, I realize that it is important to both do things right and do the right things in all my actions within an organization.
One very important aspect of a great leader is to lead by example. Any person in a position to guide others cannot ask the team to do one thing and act in the complete opposite way. This is a sure way to show that the leader has a need to show power and quickly loose respect from those who should be learning from him or her. Being a role model is importan...
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
“As a leader, your job is to make those people successful. It’s less about trying to be successful (yourself), and more about making sure you have good people and your work is to remove that barrier, removing roadblocks for them so that they can be successful in what they do”.
There are many millions of quotes that describe how to be a leader or inspire one to be a better person. Most concentrate on your own happiness and self being. The quotes measure in the millions that inspire people to take their professional lives to the next step. There are even fewer quotes that inspire one to be a better person for someone else’s sake. Maya Angelou so eloquently said, “Be a Rainbow in Someone Else 's Cloud” .*** The last 2 years I have trained myself in school and in society to be a rainbow. I have a long way to go in order to learn how to be a rainbow for even the small culture in which I associate, much less the cultures I have yet to find. In order to develop a professional plan, one must at least know their current personal style and standing. **** find a management quote that is personal.
Leaders require essential leadership skills to effectively lead. The Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Academy teaches those essential skills to enhance leadership ability out in the fleet. During my time at the CPO Academy, I acquired vital knowledge and skills in leadership throughout the classes I took which I will be taking back to the unit. One class that had a significant impact was the Facilitative Leadership class which gave me the tools to effectively run a meeting. In addition, the Change Management class provided me with the skills necessary to support Command Policy and get crew buy-in. Lastly, the Stress Management class imparted me with knowledge on how to deal with stress and mitigate it.
Ethical leadership is having an understanding of who you are, what your core values are, having the courage to live them all, in your personal life as well as your work life. Ethical leadership involves leading in a manner that respects the rights and dignity of others. Ethical decision making and leadership are the basis of ethical organizations. Leadership is a relationship between leaders and followers. The foundation of this relationship is trust. The leaders themselves must be ethical in their decisions and actions in order to influence others to behave accordingly. Ethical leadership is to know one’s core values and having the courage to live them through one’s life. Ethics and leaders go hand in hand; ethics is the heart of leadership.
