In doing these exercises I learned that specific traits can lead to good leadership skills that can be used to become a successful leader. It has taught me that a good leader is one who has a direct relationship with the people who they are leading. The assessment quizzes gave me good insight on my leadership skills and skills I need to enhance to become an effective leader. The following is what I have learned doing the assessment quizzes in the book. By doing the assessment quizzes for chapter one, I learned that I have high leadership skills, such as a team building by holding staff meeting and encouraging the team to talk, spokesperson for the team by dealing with upper management on their behalf, coach and motivator with the team by motivating them by implementing them by giving rewards when a job is completed. I also help them by serving as a mentor, to help them grow and develop. But along with these assessments, especially assessment quiz 1-2 it stated that I still need to have more experience as a leader to become an effective leader. Even though I have not done most of the Leadership experience that they listed. I do believe that I am a good leader because of the mentors’ that I had in my past. They have shown me what it takes and what to do under the leadership role. If you have had good leaders in the past and following their guidelines, I believe you can become a good leader without doing most of the thing they have listed in the book. You must also be a trustworthy person to become an effective leader. Quiz 2-2 shows the characters of a trustworthy person. I have learned personally once you lose the trust of a leader it’s very hard to earn that trust back. With organizational support, giving tools and support to do the job, and flexibility to do the job makes the job much easier to do. Overall what I learned in this class will help me in my career as a leader and will eventually help further my career. I learn that a leader is one who has a direct relationship with the people they are leading. The leader is one who also gives direction to the staff. They must have motivational and technological skills which is also a good trait to have. Transformational leadership style is the leadership style base on the quiz. I also learned there are a few things that I have to work on to better my leadership styles. With the information given in the book and what I learned in class will help me in the future.
Assessment tools can be a good start for individuals to assess their leadership characteristics and skills, such as Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristcs and Skills Assessment (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). These tools may be helpful but its accuracy is questionable. The assessment can overestimate or underestimate an individual’s skills since it is a self-subjective administered assessment that is biased towards the taker. An overconfident person may perceive their skills highly and an under confident person may have low results.
The most effective leaders know better than to try to be someone they are not. They should always be searching for opportunities to reinvest in their strengths. Leaders need to stay true to who they are and make sure they have the right people around them. The book says those who surround themselves with similar personalities are at a disadvantage to those who are secure enough to be surrounded by people who strengths will compliment theirs.
Part one is included the fundamentals and provides the context for people to know what they need to do to become better leaders. In part two, authors discuss the necessary elements of the first fundamental, Believe you can which is about how important it is for leaders to believe in their capacities and have a mindset that leadership can be learned. Chapter three is about second fundamentals, Aspire to excel, which talks about the importance of knowing what is important for leaders and who they are. Chapter four discusses the third fundamental, Challenge yourself which is about how the challenge is critical to learning. Chapter five expresses the fourth fundamental, Engage support, and it points out that leaders who achieve excellence get support along the way. The fifth fundamental, practice deliberately, is the focus of chapter six which it mentions that leaders need to spend time practicing the essential skills for becoming a great leader. Leadership has always been a diligently studied subject; the art and science of being an effective leader is something that most people would like to successfully cultivate. However, reading every book on the subject does not guarantee successful leadership – it only assists in the understanding of how others flourished in their methods. A technique that worked in one situation may reap havoc on another – such as Spartacus taking over as the leader of the people in India instead of Ghandi. Leadership is something I feel is both learned and skilled. Personally, I’ve always felt that I was a more than adequate leader and my decision-making skills were both popular and correct. In this lesson, we’re testing ourselves with tests to determine where we actually fit as leaders. I have never taken tests like this, so was honestly excited to see how I scored.
The first assessment I completed was very eye opening for me as a leader. As expected, my score for the overall potential of my leadership was on the higher end of the scale because of my background and amount of experience I have in leadership positions. This assessment portrayed a very accurate depiction of my overall leadership potential because I have always placed emphasis on being very good at what I do while working hard to not follow a path that did not work the first time.
Leadership is the glue that binds any business together, identifying and understanding your type of leadership style can ultimately aid you in becoming a better leader in your professional career. A successful business cannot function without leadership therefore this is a crucial aspect of internal employee development for businesses striving to stay relevant in a crowded marketplace. In addition to recognizing your leadership style every leader needs to look to them and identify what type of personality they have. By becoming an informed business leader you will gain trust and respect of your team to guide them into the future and maximizing potential growth. Throughout this paper I will identify my leadership style and also personality type and how it has affected my personal career growth. Leaders can have a powerful impact on the futures of many, and the way in which one approaches leadership is paramount to the type of impact one will have. Continual growth in the areas of knowledge I have and seek to acquire, as well as recognizing my leadership style and utilizing my personal strengths to the fullest, is vital to the successful implementation of my personal philosophy of leadership.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
Many times we can get so busy and wrapped up in our jobs that we may lose sight of how we are actually performing as a leader. Self-Assessment exercises offered in the reading material offer a valid look into strengths as well as opportunities for improvement. The first assessment that began to make me think about my leadership role deals directly with social motives in the work setting.

After the self-assessments from the book, now I know what kind of leader I can be, what are the weakness I need to work on and how I can influence my team and the people outside my work environment. This course has taught me many different type of leadership style and one cannot be an effective leader but just following one specific style. To be an effective leader you need to assess the situation and act according to the situations.
Some people were born to be great leaders and some were born to be great learners. I ask myself this question, “How was I created?” Was I born a leader or was I molded to lead. As I explain my philosophy on how I want to lead, I will first dive into my past to recognize and pin point my creator. October 27th 2004 I raise my right hand in order to serve and protect the United State against all enemies, foreign and domestic. At this moment in my young personal leadership journey, I get my first glimpse of a leadership style, “shut up and listen.”
