Knowing how to work with others to achieve shared goals is a big characteristic trait of a leader. When I work with others to achieve shared goals I am focused, dedicated and very open-minded. When working with others I try to map out a plan to succeed all of our ideas for the goal and make sure everyone is happy with the finishing outcome of what we were working on. I am a focused person when it comes to achieving goals not only for me but for others. When working with others to achieve a shared goal I don't let any distractions get in the way of our thought process. It is a team effort and goal so I make sure everyone idea is hear and I try to take charge in situations with groups so there won't be any chaos. One of many examples I have
honest, follow through on tasks, and are forward leaning. The leader sets the example – walk the walk. Leaders are not afraid to ‘get their hands dirty.’ With all of this, the herd or team will be more productive and willing to bleed with them…go the extra mile, to complete an objective. I would like to say that I emulate this philosophy, but there are behaviors/skills that I need to hone:
First, I must set a goal, then prepare and envision my plan. Asking myself the right questions; how will I obtain my goal? In order for me to create the plan I must identify and define the issue, my faults. If my character can change for the better and my teammates are able to identify with it, I believe I would gain their faith and trust. Leading my team to success by commitment and motivating them to work together towards one goal to benefit the organization and individual personal fulfillment. In generally, I want to possess a leisure leadership, which empower members to express their ideas and use their creativity to accomplish their tasks. In addition, I would like to listen to members’ ideas and make final decisions after comparing and evaluating their ideas; therefore, if I was a leader, I would encourage diversity and innovation of my members. In order to an effective leader, I still have to develop various skills such as collaboration skill, communication skill, and task-taking skill. First, to become a good leader, I should motivate the cooperation of among my members and continually request feedbacks from my members about their collaboration to make them feel like they are contributor of our team’s success. Second, I should develop effective communication skill to clearly explain the mission and policies of our team to my members to help behave properly. Third, I also need to develop risk-taking skill, which not only means that I should have confident and courage to take risks, but also means I should have problem solving skills to comply with risks and challenges.
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
Inspire a Shared Vision- leaders believe that they can make a difference in getting others excited and drafting them into their dream and the future possibilities.
Persuading others of your vision requires knowledge and a clear strategy (Business Dictionary). Leadership is a natural quality that comes up as responsibility in exchange of having followers with, in return, the followers creating a leader. Concluding that leadership in general cannot be taught, as per the Trait Theory, we argue that it is different characteristics in different situations that result in good leadership. The Trait Theory points out that there is a certain type of person making a good leader, with the decisive factor being: having or not having distinctive qualities of being a leader. Despite that, being an effective leader still can be trained. External and internal influences impact the effectiveness and must be considered in order to succeed. Which leads us to the Behavioural Theory, thinking of what a good leader actually does. Kurt Lewin developed three leadership types such as the autocratic leader who is a maker, someone who makes decisions without consultation with others. Contrasting, the democratic leader who consults with others (a team, for example) before making a decision. One of the practices of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership is “Inspire a Shared Vision.” This practice is about looking ahead to future goals and enlisting followers who share the same vision as the leader to join their journey. This practice can be used by Sally since she is the senior manager at the MTCR company. Sally would be the one to chose people who share similar values and aspirations to her own to be on her team. She would also be the one to set the longer-term goals for herself and her team because she holds that titled leadership position. If Sally did that, she would exemplify the two commitments of this practice: envision the future by imagining exciting and ennobling possibilities and enlisting others by appealing to shared aspirations. Sally was able to implement this practice when she chose David to be on his team even though he wasn’t the best at technology. He shared some of the same values as Sally which is what she saw in him. The benefits of Sally using this practice are that she will be able to work at her goals alongside like-minded people. That makes it easier for her to facilitate innovation among her employees. Finally, relationships in the work place and in our personal lives are one of the most important aspects that define us as individuals. Everyone knows how much more can be accomplished in a situation where there is a good working relationship verses the opposite. In a leadership role it is important to have a good understanding of each individual team member. This understanding can include what motivates, what is important, and how the leader can tap into these resources. As each of us progress in our leadership roles, it is important to remember, it’s not all about me. I believe once we accept any type of leadership role, we accept the responsibility to serve others. If we consider it only for personal gain, we will probably not be remembered as a good leader.
The practices of a leader can have wide spread implications. They can impact individual stakeholders and the organization as a whole. Clark (2013) states that “you must be the role model you want others to grow into” (para. 9). A strong leader leads by example, is ethical, and earns the trust and respect of their followers. They are also conscientious of the impact they have on the world around them. They practice impeccable communication and learn to inspire others with a positive vision for the future. Clark (2014) describes leadership as the methods of influencing others to accomplish objectives in a collective manner in the direction of the organization's vision.
A person needs to achieve certain goals in one's life before you can call them successful. Success is to achieve goals, you have set. I have set certain goals I would like to achieve in my lifetime. Some of these goals are personal while others are professional. My professional goals in life are to find a good job that makes me happy, get a good education, find a job that makes enough money for me to support my family, and help people. Goals it is very important for me to receive a good education. Most job fields require a descent education. If I don't have an education I would not be able to function properly at the work place and I would not understand what to do.
