The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership consist of five ways that anyone can follow to become a leader. The five practices are based upon extensive research and expertise. Although the five practices we have been reading about applied specifically to student leaders, anyone can follow the five steps to leadership to be an exemplary leader. The five practices include Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision. Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. “Model the Way” is the first of the five practices. It is about achieving small wins to help complex change happen. To find your voice in Model the Way, values are your guides that are used for motivation and focus. One of the practices of the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership is “Inspire a Shared Vision.” This practice is about looking ahead to future goals and enlisting followers who share the same vision as the leader to join their journey. This practice can be used by Sally since she is the senior manager at the MTCR company. Sally would be the one to chose people who share similar values and aspirations to her own to be on her team. She would also be the one to set the longer-term goals for herself and her team because she holds that titled leadership position. If Sally did that, she would exemplify the two commitments of this practice: envision the future by imagining exciting and ennobling possibilities and enlisting others by appealing to shared aspirations. Sally was able to implement this practice when she chose David to be on his team even though he wasn’t the best at technology. He shared some of the same values as Sally which is what she saw in him. The benefits of Sally using this practice are that she will be able to work at her goals alongside like-minded people. That makes it easier for her to facilitate innovation among her employees. It will also be easier for her to build and maintain relationships with the people she choses to be on her team because they hold values that are like her own. This is done through the two commitments of fostering collaboration by building trust and facilitating relationships and strengthening others by increasing self-determination and developing competence. This is another practice that Sally could use being a senior manager because she is in charge of getting her team members to work together. As she works with them and they work with each other, relationships are being formed and trust is being built. There are many ways Sally could increase the self-determination of her employees. She could provide them with choices in their projects and hold them accountable for their projects. Sally also used this practice with David when she made it known to him that he was held accountable for not completing his projects by the required due dates. As a result, the organization can reach decisions which are in the best long-term interest of the company (Harvey, Novicevic, Buckley, & Halbesleben, 2004). 1. There are numerous methods, characteristics, and motives for proper leadership. In my opinion, leadership is the overall process of unifying a team toward completing a common goal. Several key people in my life influenced this definition and how I lead.
A form of guidance in necessary to illustrate the direction that an organization, community, or society desires to move toward, therefore the approach of leadership becomes very important. In order to strive, define and achieve goals leadership inspires a sense of purpose and passion to the effort that the association undertakes (Russell Consulting, Inc., 2011). If a solid foundation of leadership is not applied the objectives, goals, customer service, quality, and, productivity will be lost and result in inadequacy for the corporation. An effective organization relies on leadership to serve and to communicate goals, strategies, organize, and motivate others to arrive at a collaborative result (Understanding Society, 2008). Challenges being faced include cultivating strength in leadership, building team environments to accomplish goals, having clear mission, vision, and values, and reducing employee turnover while improving workforce morale (The Ken Blanchard Companies, 2011).
Having and transmitting a successful "shared vision" requires true "buy-in" on the part of the employees and the organization as a whole, and must foster genuine commitment and active enrollment in order to bring that organizational vision to a personal level. For shared vision to become a product of personal vision, each individual must "feel it", and be able to see how this vision can be articulated to promote the long-term interests of the company's success, and position in the larger scheme of things. This road to the end result is usually not mapped out or even guaranteed, and the creative tension this inspires, through personal commitment and dedication, is the fire it produces form it's visionary fuel.
The main rule of leading by example is never ask anybody to do something that a person would not do. If a person's job is to work in the kitchen and he asked someone to peel potatoes and that person gets behind, being a good example would be to pitch right in and help the person to catch up. Another example is being a girl/boy scout leader and teaching them to obey rules and respect others while doing so themselves. Leaders in school should always be a good example to other students such as Jr. Beta, Scholastic clubs, and S.T.U.C.O.. In this particular case study I have chosen to base my study on the scenario number three, “As a manager, you have two employees who have a difficult time working together. While nothing specifically unprofessional has been done by either one of them, other team members have expressed concern that the differences between them are causing tension and some other team members are having difficulty performing their work. Some have even gone so far as to say that the situation is causing a hostile work environment.” The one in which I believe that is always going to be situations and differences that need to be dealt with and two I actually work in this very situation at the time and can relate more to this. There are several ways to define leadership, but what sets effective leaders apart from commonplace managers are their extraordinary actions and the successes that result. In The Leadership Challenge, James Kouzes and Barry Posner claim leaders that employ The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership are much more effective than those who do not (2012, p. 25). This paper will be reviewing my assessment findings, exploring my strengths and weaknesses, examining my personal-best leadership story, and detailing a specific area of development.
Leaders are role models for those around them, a collection of experiences and moral values. Passion, purpose, and people are the foundation of what it means to be a team and a professional. Without the proper motivations and guidance, even the most determined can fall short of success. My leadership philosophy is with the premise of the principles of being, knowledge, or conduct. Professional conduct is demonstrated through work ethic, patience, and humility, others will be motivated to give more than just themselves. Two simple rules provide a guideline. First, everything you promise to complete do it to the greatest of your abilities. Second, never impede on the accomplishments or successes of others.
Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.
Kouzes and Posner (2007) have defined the following five leadership practices as necessary to achieving great things in organisations;
I have had the opportunity to work with leaders of different styles, and by just watching them, listening to them and seeing how the staff reacts; I can gauge what is productive with their staff. I try not to copy or mimic their style and ensure my own style comes through in being consistent, authentic and genuine. I feel by following these traits they give me necessary foundation and help me towards achieving leadership excellence.
(1) I would like to create an optimum work environment by demonstrating collaborative behavior myself. This will inspire my team to follow or model the same behavior (Gratton and Erickson, 2007). (2) I will also allow myself adequate time daily to coach my team on the basis of creativity and innovation to improve business performance (Coutu and Beschloss, 2009). I will give clear direction to my team as to where we are going as a team together. According to Coutu & Beschloss (2009) unless the leader provides a clear direction, there is a real risk that different members will pursue different plans. That is why it is important to articulate a clear direction for my team to makse that everyone is on the same page as we’re moving forward (Coutu and Beschloss, 2009). (3) I will establish a sense of community – When people feel a sense of inclusivity, they are more likely to reaching out to others and share their knowledge to improve effective collaboration in a creative and innovative way (Gratton and Erickson,
Those who embrace positive leadership are authentic and passionate individuals whose work ethics are align with greater good of the organization. There are five practices for effective positive leadership (commit to a higher purpose, build trust, be driven by strengths and values, focus on the humans-not just the job, personify a growth mindset). Positive leadership begins with senior leaders of the organization by applying the five practices and encouraging subordinates to do the same. SGMs are the key ambassadors for positive leadership, as they have enhanced and mastered the five practices of positive leadership.
By allowing for employees to be increasingly engaged in workplace activities, they are then given the opportunity to develop new skills. Most leaders also encourage for employees to participate in team building activities so that any employee would be more comfortable and have stronger chemistry when working with other members of their respective departments, and with other employees in the company as a whole. Leaders are capable of motivating their subordinates through a series of actions, such as words of encouragement, acts of appreciation, and allowing for employee involvement in key decision making processes in the company. For instance, leaders who appreciate, constantly encourage and assist in the improvement of the tasks performed by their subordinates will be able to build a strong and healthy employer-employee relationship. This good relationship instils the traits of confidence in employees and motivates them to enhance their performance.
