As defined by Merriam Webster, a mentor is, “someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person.” “My Mentor, My Friend” is a poem about the relationship of a mentor and a mentee that goes beyond this definition. The author writes about how their mentor not only gives guidance, but is someone they trust and can be themselves around. This mentor is seen as a friend that is looked up to for advice, life skills, and encouragement. They were always patient, uplifting, accepting, and understanding, going above and beyond the basic role of a mentor. The mentee expresses in this poem how appreciative and thankful they are to have a mentor and friend in their life. (Genter, 97) Personally, I have been
blessed to have had many mentors in my life, big and small, but my biggest mentor is probably my best friend, Nicolle. She is two years older than me and we met in middle school. I had no idea that she would end up being my rock and there to pick me up for the past six years. She is always so calm and level-headed despite the situation going on and helps guide me to make smart, rational choices. Whenever I need to vent or just get away from the things going on in my life, Nicolle is the first to be there for me. She has taught me that other people’s opinion do not matter, that sometimes the best thing to do is take a step back and look at the big picture, that you cannot always control what goes on, and that is ok to have a bad day. These are all lessons my mentor, my friend Nicolle taught me. I strive to be someone like that to her and hopefully other people that I have the opportunity to meet. This is what being a mentor means to me. “My Mentor, My Friend” encompasses how Nicolle has been a mentor to me and how that specific person has affected the author. It shows that being a mentor to someone goes further than just giving advice and guidance. While those components are part of being a mentor, it is much more than just that. To be a mentor is to be a role model and a friend, someone to show another how to navigate through a class or a situation or even life, but also be there to comfort, encourage, and listen.
This book shows what a role of a mentor has on someone’s life. It is a simple story about an unlikely pair of friends who learn the meaning of trust to overcome their failures and turn those failures into
A mentor is a trusted guide who shows you the way in life. Through the mentors of Pi and Antonio, they help save and point them to the right way in life. In the novel Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, Ultima shows Tony that good can always overcome evil, no matter how evil it may be. Life of Pi by Yann Martel, shows that Pi can face his fears by the help of a big Bengal tiger in a small boat, and that the littlest things in life can change the course of how your destiny awaits.
A mentor is someone who shares one’s wisdom, knowledge or experience with one’s junior person so that the person could learn and grow. Mentors have many different style of training or passing on their knowledge to other people. The movie “Something the Lord Made” directed by Joseph Sargent shows a kind of mentoring style in between the two main characters Dr. Blalock and Vivan Thomas who invent a way to treat “blue babies” back in the 40s. Vivan Thomas is a brilliant black men who wishes to go to college, and to become a doctor; however, due to the Depression, he loses all his saving. Instead of going to college, Thomas finds an opportunity to work in the hospital. Dr. Blalock, Thomas’s employer, discovers Thomas’s incredible knowledge in medical, and promotes Thomas as his assistant instead of a janitor. Dr. Blalock is a mentor to Thomas. Dr. Blalock trained Thomas with only a high school certification becomes a medical scientific lab technician. Although Dr. Blalock’s mentoring style of Vivan Thomas is similar from my high school speech team coach Mrs. Kuznicki mentoring style of me, they both speak out their criticism of other without consider other’s feeling, and also acknowledge mentees for what they have done, but Mrs. Kuznicki treats me with more patient, less selfishness and encouragement than Dr. Blalock treats Thomas.
A mentor is a trustworthy and experienced person that one can look to in time of difficulty for advice and support. In the novel, Reservation Blues by Sherman Alexie, Junior Polatkin is easily influenced by his surroundings, causing him to fall into the destructive patterns of reservation Native Americans, particularly alcoholism. Numerus setbacks, combine with this lack of a reliable mentors ultimately lead to Junior’s demise. Similar to Junior, I have experienced setbacks in my swimming career; however, unlike Junior, I have had positive role models and mentors in my life helping me overcome my setback and to use them as growing experiences. In the novel Reservation Blues, Junior Polatkin ultimately fails to overcome the challenges associated
The Mentor is a character created to guide the Hero via protection and wisdom. This character leads to the success of the Hero (AN). They are mentors to many of their students and an inspiration to a brighter future. Throughout my life mentors have played a very major role in my success in education and life matters to the point where I have managed. Surprisingly many of my mentors are teachers. There are many times that I have thought of giving up not only on education but also in life but later find myself reading and achieving more. Just as in the movie discussed in this paper mentors’ encouraging words are the reason why I did not give up.
This definition of mentor is ratified by Parsloe (2009): To support and encourage individuals to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be.
Mentoring can be that hand that reaches down and pulls you out of the pit. Mentoring can change lives forever and create permanent relationships. Mentoring can help a child get on the right track if they do not have someone else to help them. Whether they have grown up without active parents, have gotten into trouble from time to time, or even if they are a straight A student, the youth needs mentoring. It will build a country that has a solid foundation in which the current youth of America will one day lead. Mentoring proves that “regardless of background, [all children] are equipped to achieve their dreams” (Bruce and
I have been a mentee in three mentoring programs and I understand from firsthand experience how important mentors have been in my life. Each relationship was very different; one of my mentors was about two generations older than me, while my two more recent mentors have been only a few years older than me.
To start we need to find an expert on mentor archetypes. From the article Archetypes in the Hero's Journey written by Melinda Goodin, who is an expert in the archetypal field, states “The mentor serves a number of purposes: a source of wisdom, gift giver, and conscience...Other Mentors can act to motivate the protagonist and help overcome fear” (Goodin, 2004) So from using this expert research we can see that a mentor is a teacher or wise person that helps out the main character in a story. The mentor gives the hero knowledge of sorts so the hero can complete their task. The information I found intrigued me so I kept doing a little bit more research and I came across another article called The Mentor Archetype, written by Nutschell, which states “They also invent items which the hero might need along their journey or they bestow the hero with a particular gift to aid them in their quest” (Nutschell, 2011). This quote from Nutshell further proves that a mentor archetype is a person that helps the hero of the story out by giving the hero some sort of item to complete their task at hand. Mentors by definition seem to be very important to the development of the plot in a story, so this thought led me to another question; how does a mentor actually impact the
Firstly, a mentor is someone who trusted by others to give guidance. In the Heart of the Sea provides the reader with excerpts from the crewman's diaries and recounts of the events to show that they view Captain Pollard and First Mate Chase as advisors during trivial
Mentoring is a strong educational tool and is very useful especially within the New York City Department of Education. It is a great way for experience teachers to pass down information. The one and one interaction is more lasting than reading it from a book. This method will allow a smooth transition for new teachers. There are a lot of procedures that are confusing to beginners and mentors can uncoil those kinks. Beginning teacher will also get the opportunity to experience different teaching styles and also decide what will work for them and what will not. Mentoring is a valuable asset in guiding person’s development.
The best example of a mentor and mentee relationship is Friar Laurence and Romeo. Friar Laurence is one of the major parts of Romeo’s life giving him advice and comforting him in his time of need like in II.iii.81 “ For doting, not for loving, pupil mine.” and II.iii.94 “Wisely and slowly. They stumble that run fast.”.
I am very interested to become some of the upcoming grade 8s’s mentor. I remember back in grade 8, I had a lot of anxiety coming into such a big high school. I would alway stress and not knowing what to expect. Especially for the first month of school, I was just completely lost and confuse. I would really like to help the upcoming grade 8s, by being there for them. In a way, they will have someone to talk to whenever they encounter problems. I would also be able to provide answers to their question about van tech and much more! Also becoming a mentor for incoming grade 8s also helps me connect with more people. I will be able to learn from them and they can learn from me.
Many young people just need to be motivated and given a fair chance at success. Young people need mentors to help them find their way and to help them stay focused. Mentors play an intricate roll in your lives and are sort of liaisons between your parents or guardians and your educators.
