I watched the movie Deadpool and loved it. The incredibly stupid things Deadpool did in the movie were strangely hilarious. The way Ryan Reynolds voice and facial expressions were implemented in the movie just made every single scene of the movie enjoyable. The humorous jokes that Tim Miller made during the bar scene was amazing. The way the characters acted together made the movie franchise worthy; however, I noticed one thing in the movie that really got me thinking, has the mentor archetype changed from the past? The mentors in Deadpool seemed different in some areas, but the mentors were also the same in some other aspects, so this forced me to research this one specific question, how has the mentor archetype changed or not changed over …show more content…
the years of its existence; however, I couldn't just find the answer to this question by doing one quick google search. I had to find answers to multiple other questions first and then apply that learning to find out if the mentor archetype has changed over time. I had to find different texts from different time periods and analyze the mentor archetype in every text in order to find out if the mentor archetype had, or had not changed over time. By using some background knowledge I inferred that the mentor archetype had changed over time because as humans, we are always changing so we can succeed as a society. Before we begin my investigation, we must determine what a mentor archetype actually is.
To start we need to find an expert on mentor archetypes. From the article Archetypes in the Hero's Journey written by Melinda Goodin, who is an expert in the archetypal field, states “The mentor serves a number of purposes: a source of wisdom, gift giver, and conscience...Other Mentors can act to motivate the protagonist and help overcome fear” (Goodin, 2004) So from using this expert research we can see that a mentor is a teacher or wise person that helps out the main character in a story. The mentor gives the hero knowledge of sorts so the hero can complete their task. The information I found intrigued me so I kept doing a little bit more research and I came across another article called The Mentor Archetype, written by Nutschell, which states “They also invent items which the hero might need along their journey or they bestow the hero with a particular gift to aid them in their quest” (Nutschell, 2011). This quote from Nutshell further proves that a mentor archetype is a person that helps the hero of the story out by giving the hero some sort of item to complete their task at hand. Mentors by definition seem to be very important to the development of the plot in a story, so this thought led me to another question; how does a mentor actually impact the …show more content…
story? By using the same article, Archetypes in the Hero’s Journey, we can find out that mentors offer strategies that help the protagonist overcome obstacles (Goodin, 2004). From this quote, it shows that mentors are the protagonist motivation and without mentors heroes wouldn't even exist; furthermore, the mentors are the reason heroes win because mentors give the heroes the necessary tools to overcome the bad guys and win, even if it's just some motivation. Now that we’ve defined a mentor archetype and found out what a mentor does for the plot line of the story, let’s turn our attention way back many years ago to analyze what a mentor archetype looked like in the past. In the 1950 movie Cinderella, Cinderella’s fairy godmother gives Cinderella a nice dress and a carriage so she can go to the ball dance (Cinderella, 1950). This is saying that mentors from about 67 years ago will go out of their way and create or give the hero of the story some items so the hero can complete their quest or journey. The mentor of this story follows the same guidelines as the definition of a mentor archetype. We know what a mentor archetype looked like 67 years ago, so what does the archetype look like 11 years ago?
During the movie Eragon the mentor of the movie, Brom, gives Eragon many tricks and tips on how Eragon can better control his dragon. (Eragon, 2006). Based on that scene in the movie, we can see that mentors from 11 years ago will also give the hero of the story a gift to fulfill the hero’s quest. This is very similar to the mentor archetype from 67 years ago, as seen in the movie Cinderella. The fairy godmother gave Cinderella a physical gift and in Eragon, Brom gave Eragon a mental gift, but in both cases, the mentor’s gift helped the hero overcome obstacles in order to complete their journey. So far the mentor archetype has not changed over time, but certainly, something has changed in the mentor archetype from 11 years ago to the present
day. After discovering what the mentor archetype looked like 67 and 11 years ago, how will the archetype look in the present day? In a movie made recently called The Heat gives us a great example of a modern day mentor. In a part of the movie Detective Mullins rips up Special Agent Sarah Ashburn’s clothing to try to make her look more attractive to the suspect so they can bug his phone. Just like in Cinderella and Eragon the things the mentor did in this movie, who was Detective Mullins, made the hero able to complete their task. In all three of these movies, the hero of the movie would not have been able to defeat the bad guys and complete their journey. This came to a huge shock to me that I may have been wrong with my initial prediction. By putting all this information together we can come to the conclusion that the mentor archetype has not changed over time. Throughout the years in every single storyline, the mentor archetype has followed the same exact definition, and that is the mentor archetype is a person who aids the hero of the story into completing their task by giving the heroes some sort of gift. The mentors might not help the hero out in the same way, but overall they accomplish the same thing. In every case with a mentor archetype the mentor helps the hero out with some sort of gift in order for the hero to succeed, so this means that my initial prediction was wrong. The mentor archetype has not changed over time.
The popular film from 1977 known as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope written and directed by George Lucas, there are many uses of archetypes, which include use of the colors blue and green in light sabers, and the color gold in the character, Luke Skywalker’s, clothing at the end of the movie. The use of these colors throughout the movie help to show the heroic cycle of Luke Skywalker by bringing out the changes he goes through from his purity, to his rebirth, and then finally when Luke gains wisdom from his journey.
The role of the mentor is to “protect the main character,” (Literary Devices, 4) and “through the wise advice and training of [the] mentor … the main character achieves success” (Literary Devices, 4). The mentor is as important to the story as the main character and is often a critical part of the hero accomplishing his quest. Some examples of the mentor are Yoda from Star Wars, Atticus from to Kill a Mockingbird, and Hagrid from the Harry Potter series. In many situations, the mentor is such an effective teacher because they themselves have at one point been in the hero's position. The are able to teach the hero how to defeat a dragon because they once conquered one themselves; they can help the hero overthrow the king because they once dethroned a ruler.
Theme of Top Gun is that we as humans will stick together to support or fight a common cause, because in the movie Top Gun Maverick has to find the love of his life, get over his friend's death and has to fight with his academy enemy to help save people's lives. The archetypes of this movie are hero, mentor, and innocent. Maverick is a hero, Viper is the mentor because he is the Top Gun instructor and helps everybody with their flying and lessons. Goose is the innocent because he does nothing wrong yet he ends up dieing because of a problem with the plane.
A mentor is someone who shares one’s wisdom, knowledge or experience with one’s junior person so that the person could learn and grow. Mentors have many different style of training or passing on their knowledge to other people. The movie “Something the Lord Made” directed by Joseph Sargent shows a kind of mentoring style in between the two main characters Dr. Blalock and Vivan Thomas who invent a way to treat “blue babies” back in the 40s. Vivan Thomas is a brilliant black men who wishes to go to college, and to become a doctor; however, due to the Depression, he loses all his saving. Instead of going to college, Thomas finds an opportunity to work in the hospital. Dr. Blalock, Thomas’s employer, discovers Thomas’s incredible knowledge in medical, and promotes Thomas as his assistant instead of a janitor. Dr. Blalock is a mentor to Thomas. Dr. Blalock trained Thomas with only a high school certification becomes a medical scientific lab technician. Although Dr. Blalock’s mentoring style of Vivan Thomas is similar from my high school speech team coach Mrs. Kuznicki mentoring style of me, they both speak out their criticism of other without consider other’s feeling, and also acknowledge mentees for what they have done, but Mrs. Kuznicki treats me with more patient, less selfishness and encouragement than Dr. Blalock treats Thomas.
When dealing with the character archetype there are several characters those being the mentor and the evil figure with an ultimately good heart. To begin with, the mentor is
Haven’t We Met Before: an Archetypal Analysis of Guardians of the Galaxy Have you ever thought to yourself, now where have I seen that before? Odds are you were watching a movie or reading a book, when something that happened in the story or a character said or did that sounded familiar. This is probably due to archetypes. Archetypes are original models that others are based upon, almost like a mold or a cookie cutter that makes similar copies. One movie that has many great examples archetypal characters, themes, and journeys is Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn.
The novel “The Antagonist” is about a guy named Gordon Rankin who goes by Rank. His college friend, Adam, wrote a book chronicling his life. However he wrote this book without Rank’s permission which angers Rank immensely. The book explores what Rank does afterwards. Throughout this novel many archetypes are present. These archetypes are pivotal to the novel and its messages. It suggests that people are easily characterized. In fact, no matter how unique someone seems they can almost always be put into a category.
The mentor helps guide the hero throughout the journey. In “The Odyssey”, an important mentor was Athena because she helps warn Odysseus about everything inside his home and guides him with information and what to do when he’s inside. “Athena appears and informs him of the situation at his home” (Homer, 1090). Athena tells Odysseus about the suitors at his home and helps him get ready for everything that is about to happen. In “Percy Jackson” one of the biggest mentors would be Poseidon because throughout the movie and he helps Percy figure out his powers. Poseidon tells Percy “Go to the water, the water will give you power.” Poseidon tells Percy to go to the water because he knows it will heal him. Likewise both mentors help by giving advice to the heroes while completing their
Mentors can come in different ways from omins to people. In The Alchemist Santiago has many helpful mentors that help him understand the universal ideas. One of his mentors was an old king named Melchizedek, he helps purswaid Santiago to pursue his Personal Legend. Also, Melchizedek gave Santiago two stones called Urim and Thummim. The stones represent good omens and bad omens. After all, Santiago did not use them very often because he was able to understand the universal ideas of good and bad omens quickly. Another mentor that
I was watching a Disney movie. I know what you're thinking, why is this teenage girl being lazy on a Saturday night? Well, I don’t know. As I was looking at the movie, I noticed a person following the hero. “Wow! Is this like a sidekick?” I ask myself, Why is this person giving wise advice and why is their sayings different from other movies? How did he or she overcome that? I remembered something from english class. It was something about archetypes. I told myself, “Wait this is like the mentor archetype!” Around the world, there are a lot of movies and books that come or are made from different cultures. How? When it comes to Disney and superhero movies they come from everywhere. For example, the movies Mulan, Moana and Pocahontas. But
Firstly, a mentor is someone who trusted by others to give guidance. In the Heart of the Sea provides the reader with excerpts from the crewman's diaries and recounts of the events to show that they view Captain Pollard and First Mate Chase as advisors during trivial
In Eboo Patel’s book “Acts of Faith,” he talks a lot about mentors and what they do to shape some ones view point and helps them figure out who they are as a person and who they are in their religion. When looking back at my life I had many different mentors, some of them are really good ones and some are not so good. Patel states in his book that all mentors aren’t going to be the best. Some of them will guide you in the right direction and some of them will guide you in another direction. Depending on what direction you are lead to you could be doing good things or even going the other direction and go the bad way and harm others in the process. Most people who aren’t really sure about who they are in their religion and or they are still learning about it are going to be confused and will listen to whoever will help them out and understand it. When I was re-reading a few chapters in the
Mentoring is a strong educational tool and is very useful especially within the New York City Department of Education. It is a great way for experience teachers to pass down information. The one and one interaction is more lasting than reading it from a book. This method will allow a smooth transition for new teachers. There are a lot of procedures that are confusing to beginners and mentors can uncoil those kinks. Beginning teacher will also get the opportunity to experience different teaching styles and also decide what will work for them and what will not. Mentoring is a valuable asset in guiding person’s development.
